49ers-Giants live blog: Pregame

SAN FRANCISCO — Here’s the pregame live blog for the 49ers Week 6 game against the New York Giants.

I’m breaking up the live blog to make the discussion more manageable. I’ll start a new live blog at the beginning of every quarter.

11:28 Alex Smith is throwing passes in the end zone. He does not have a brace on his sprained right middle finger

11:36 Now Smith is throwing to Garrett Celek in the middle of the field. Every pass has been on target so far.

11:50 Scott Tolzien’s pregame assignment is to warm up Vernon Davis.  Tolzien will throw Davis passes for as long as Davis wants.

11:57 Hakeem Nicks and Corey Webster are active for the Giants.

12:00 Brandon Jacobs is inactive. So are Scott Tolzien, A.J. Jenkins, LaMichael James, Trenton Robinson, Joe Looney and Ian Williams.

12:00 Here are the Giants inactives: WR Jerrel Jernigan, S Kenny Phillips, RB Andre Brown, DE Adewale Ojomo, T James Brewer, TE Adrien Robinson and DT Rocky Bernard. DE Markus Kuhn will start in place of Bernard.

12:08 Pay attention to Hakeem Nicks. He’s missed the past three Giants games with knee and foot injuries. Is he healthy enough to play a major role in this game, or will the Giants use him as a decoy?

12:17 Tolzien is still warming up on the field – he’s throwing 20-yard bootleg sideline passes to wide receivers coach John Morton. All the other 49ers are in the locker room.

12:21 Will Tukuafu changed his number to 48 because he’s been playing much more offense than defense recently.

12:32 Nicks is running around the field sans limp. The last time he started a game (Week 2 at Tampa Bay) he caught 10 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown.

12:34 New York Giants’ beat writer Tom Rock just tweeted: “Hakeem Nicks giving the pregame pep talk to the Giants. Have never seen him fired up like that before!”

1:10 The Lions’ offense scored 13 points today. Jim Schwartz has to be on the hot seat. He’s done a terrible job this season.
