49ers @ Panthers divisional playoff live blog: First quarter

CHARLOTTE — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ divisional playoff game against the Panthers. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

10:04 The Panthers win the toss and defer.

10:06 Graham Gano kicks it out of the end zone. Touchback.

10:19 Kaepernick converts a third-and-10 with a 23-yard pass to a wide open Quinton Patton. Then Kaepernick converts a third-and-5 with an 8-yard dump off to Gore. Kaepernick cannot convert a third-and-6, but gets bailed out when Mike Mitchell commits a personal foul on Vernon Davis after the play. Kaepernick cannot convert a third-and-10, he gets sacked for a loss of 6. Phil Dawson makes a 49-yard field goal. 3-0 49ers with 9:12 left in the first quarter. Will Tukuafu was shaken up on that drive after making a catch. He seemed to injure his left leg.

10:21 Ted Ginn Jr. drops the kickoff in the end zone and the ball rolls out of bounds. Touchback.

10:24 Tukuafu has a knee injury and is questionable.

10:26 On second-and-3 from the 41, Newton is pressured, throws off his back foot and gets intercepted by Patrick Willis. 49ers ball at the Panthers’ 46.

10:33 Two Panthers penalties move the ball to their 20 for the 49ers. On third-and-5 from the 15, Kaepernick misses an open Crabtree. Dawson makes the 33-yard field goal attempt. 6-0 49ers. The Panthers have been awful to start this game. They’re self-destructing, but the 49ers are letting them hang around. It could be 14-0 but it’s 6-0.
