49ers @ Patriots live blog: Pregame

FOXBORO, Ma. — This is the live blog for the pregame of the 49ers Week 15 game against the New England Patriots. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

2:55 I’m looking out the press box window. I see it’s dark and rainy and there’s a huge tarp covering the entire football field. I bet if you hit that sucker running, you could slide from goalpost to goalpost.

C.J. Spillman came out about a half hour ago and ran a couple of laps around the field. Then he went back into the locker room. Alex Boone is stretching in a t-shirt and sweats under a goal post.

3:04 They’re taking the tarp off the field. Why do they need to cover artificial turf?

3:31 Isaac Sopoaga is warming up on the field in a sleeveless t-shirt.

3:47 Scott Tolzien is standing in the end zone wearing short and a t-shirt. What is he thinking?

3:58 The 49ers inactives are Mario Manningham, Tavares Gooden, Trenton Robinson, Jewel Hampton, Joe Looney and Ian Williams.

3:59 Scott Tolzien is active.

4:00 The Patriots inactives are TE Rob Gronkowski, S Derrick Martin, LB Tracy White, OL Markus Zusevics, DE Jake Bequette and DL Ron Brace.

4:03 Randy Moss will start in place of Mario Manningham.

4:09 David Akers just came up short on a 50-yard warmup field goal kick.

4:10 And now Akers misses a 40-yard field goal off the right upright.

4:10 And now he misses a 49-yard field goal off the right upright. Next kick, he finally makes a 49-yarder.

4:16 It seems Akers is hooking the field goals he’s missing.

4:17 Akers just snuck a 52-yard field goal over the cross bar.

4:18 Akers comes up short on a 55-yard field goal.

4:43 There’s about a half an hour left until kickoff, and it’s pouring. It’s 36 degrees outside.

4:46 Patriots’ top cornerback, Aqib Talib, who injured his hip against the Texans, will play and start. He’ll match up one-on-one with no safety help against Crabtree. Those two faced each other Week 5 last season, and Talib held Crabtree to two catches for 36 yards.
