49ers pick up Arik Armstead’s 5th-year option for 2019

The 49ers just announced they picked up Arik Armstead’s 5th-year option. He will remain with the team through 2019.

This is a strange move.

I thought the 49ers just drafted Armstead’s replacement with their fourth-round pick — Kentavius Street, the defensive lineman from North Carolina State who tore his ACL during a pre-draft workout with the Giants. Street will miss the 2018 season, but probably will return to the Niners for 2019.

Why did they pick him? They knew they’d keep Armstead.

  1. Grant – I assume you know the details of Armstead’s contract – particularly the 49ers obligation for 2019 on before you would criticize the move. Please publish them so we can all chat about it.

They aren’t going to pick up his 5th year option, so trading him during this offseason is really the only option they have if they want to get something for him.

Looks like you were wrong, again.

        1. I’m happy you finally got to say that Prime. It was obviously very important to you. Want a cookie?

    1. FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!
grant admits he knows nothing!!!!!! they guy actually gets paid to make asinine statements that have no bearing on fact or reality!! the guy acts as if he knows everything and is smarter than everyone……..but proves time and time again that he knows NOTHING about football! and now, hes finally ADMITTED IT IN WRITING!!!

Grant, ill help you out-the Eagles just won the SB….. with a back-up qb……and basically zero players with name recognition!!! outside of Wentz , Blount and Ajay…..most fans couldn’t name a single player on that team.
Ppl that know football though……will tell you that the strength of that team was the D-line! Particularly the exceptional depth of that D-line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you see where this is going sony????
The FO is trying to assemble a strong, deep, versatile unit there bud! The thinking is-” ill take 7-8 really good, interchangeable guys…….as opposed to 1-2 stars”

I also take offense issue with the pessimistic view of the draft. We got faster and smarter and that’s not up for debate dude. You should have been relaying wonderlic scores and 40 times……instead of spewing your ignorant opinion!
The FO is still trying to get guys that fit the system man! TB could weigh 350 on Friday morning……sing that contract hes waiting for that same afternoon…….and show up Monday weighing 400 pounds!!!! And he cant move at 350!!!!! Hes not a fit in the outside zone!!!!!! PERIOD!!

        1. no ed, not at all bud…… I have at least 6 years of pent up frustration with grant. The guy dosent appreciate a job that most of us would kill for. a job he never earned. a job hes horrible at. That one could get paid money to troll fans on the internet and pass for a journalist. that this is the horrible state in witch the world as devolved into.
I’m mad that the guy manipulates facts and information to give his asinine opinions the slightest bit of merit.
Pettist can play all 3 wr positions and is the heir to Garcon. He and Goodwin will play outside together by 2019 if not sooner and be a dynamic duo that will open up things for te’s ,rb’s and the slot…..
TT is a promising slot wr, and important as that is….the other good drafted late will give us some depth.
The ILB was probably 15-20 pounds away from being a top 10 pick. hes the real deal and a rare bread that can cover te’ and rb’s…
McG is a cheaper ,smarter ,more reliable T that is also an upgrade in the running game ’cause he can actually move. he could also possible play LT in 2-3 years. the raiders would have pounced at 10! so the notion we could have traded back or it was a reach is absurd. top T’s usually go higher than 9…..

ill keep going grant……if you got the nards to respond……. i dare you!! id love nothing more than to expose you!

and ed!!!…….. why do you spend so much time underneath grants desk!?

          1. Why don’t you spend time learning how to write!!….Your predictions are strange at best. You say ILB 20lbs from a top 10 pick..lol, you know nothing, plus he’s not “bread”…. AND you do have anger and mental issues. And Darth!!!……you are nothing but a fool!!!!!

          2. Hey dunce J….keep going on Grant because…we all laugh at you!!…You are hilarious and ridiculous. Just like the class clown, take care bud!

            1. creepy uncle ed……you got me, I spelled breed wrong. however I still know way more about football than you bud. This sight does give me anger issues…….because little twits like you get on here talking shi about people who would molly whop your sorry @$$ in real life…..cowards hiding behind the safety of the internet!
Why do you feel the need to defend grant??? Are you 2 lovers???
I dislike grant for many reasons…….one of witch is the fact that id tell you where you can meet for your beat down…….and even though you started all of this by repeatedly attacking me for no reason…..id be the one getting blocked for giving you a time and a place bud.

Warner is a rare BREED…..I guy with speed to cover rb and te’s, he can thump and run side line to sideline!!!! hes not the ideal 250 pounds youd like from an ILB or hed be a top 10-15 pick!!! does that make sense ignoramus?? hes 15 pounds away from being Navarro Willis! got it bud!
McG was going no lower than 10 to the raiders……so why on earth would grant make an ignorant statement about we could have traded back and got him”?????? The only thing TB does better is pass block, give the kid time….. hes smart, hes a stud, hell lay T for us for a decade!!!

grant dosent want to debate me…..he knows who I am. He knows my email. Its perfectly ok if all you guys laugh at me…………I laugh at most of you on a daily basis!!!

              1. and one more thing creepy ed….. your new here dude. ive been on this blog every single day for 6+ years. Theres some very intelligent posters on here……..but they get overshadowed by the morons. At the very least, this blog is good for a laugh.
I don’t post much ’cause theres always someone like you………..with your creepy, stalker like infatuation with grant that makes you feel like you gotta defend him by attacking others…..

Did you even read grants intro?????? he begs for us to argue with him!!!!!!!! he loves it! he trolls us to get this rise our of us!! nothing I say about him isn’t either true, and /or been said before……..
we are all laughing at YOU bud!!!!!!! its like a wrestling event……everyone knows its scripted except you dude!!!!!!!!! on here trying to “defend a grown mans honor” or something…..like hes a women or a child that cant defend himself!!! LMFAO
I might be an angry jerk……but your a whole other level of creepy weirdo bud!

              2. It’s too bad dunce J and jrs “your other creepy name” are ignorant. You misspelled way more other words than breed plus you can’t write worth a damn but that makes me laugh, so keep it up. I do feel sorry for you two pyscho’s, just terrible predictions and way worse than Grant’s. You know nothing, saying Warner is 15lbs from being another Patrick Willis, hahahaha!!!! You feel like dishing out attacks at your buddy Grant but you can’t take it. Typical cupcake, crying and your panties are all bunched up. You are the class clown troll!!. You must be one of those that overshadow some of the intelligent posters here, lol…Now you’re exposed!!

              3. well ed my boy…. we hit rock bottom and at the very least were moving in the right, more civilized direction….
for the record…. lets be very clear, you started all this bro! I cant deny it, the evidence is clear…. I ripped grant, you umped in insulting me….I responded…….you insulted me again and again….
on your 5th post you finally mentioned something football related instead of only insults.

Not ONE PERSON DEFENDED YOU OR ATTACKED ME!!!!
again, new guy, there a code of conduct that you simply are not intelligent enough to pick up on……..
Grant is the villain around here. he thrives in this role. its what makes the blog.
posters are supposed to show respect to one another!!!!!!!!! we don’t gang up on ppl!!!! EVER!!!!!!! the concept is so disgusting!!!!! Bullying has not been in style for at least a decade!!
ppl post ignorant crap on here daily…… and ppl respectfully ignore or respectfully enlighten them!!! we don’t attack, we don’t gang up……we talk football here dude!!!
If you resembled anything close to decent human being……you would already know all of this!!
The point of this sight is for the fans to interact and talk football with other knowledgeable ppl!
Have you noticed that not one person agreed with or attacked me????????!!!!!
a couple ppl agreed or defended me though!!!!!!!
your the odd, outsider whos mean and nasty. you need to take a log look in the mirror bud.

still trying to understand your maniacal issue with my original post……..I thought it was your man crush o grant, defending him and all……..but since you finally spoke of something football related……it seems your man crush also extends to Bowman and willis…….your anger is that I mentioned the rookie I the same breath, no?
sorry bro, those 2 are some of my all time favorites…….I meant no slight towards them.
I’m a true 49er fan and an optimist. I hope the kid does
                reminds of those two…..
grant is a pessimist……..hence our frenemy relationship.
you calling me the angry one is funny, ‘cuz the evidence above speaks for itself!!!
you repeatedly attacked me, no one agreed with you. you completely misread the scenario and clearly have to much stubborn pride to admit it or apologize. sad bro:(

              4. Well, jasmin show, mrs or dunce J…looks like you finally are banned and should be. Three of your posts you resorted to physical threats after you lost you’re mind, mental and became immature like a boy when he loses, they resort to threat physically for their ego sake.

Like in 3 posts you physically threaten…”I’d molly whop your sorry A$$”…in another..”this is where I tell people like you where and when to meet me for your dose of karma”. And in the another post you physically threaten…”dude id take your women right off of your arm bro! id eat your lunch and wipe my hands on your shirt….you wouldn’t even say a word to me in real life dude!!!!!”…so you’re immature and resort to low life tactics because that’s all you have left you’ve lost. This why you are mental like I said originally, angry and should be BANNED!!!

Also when boys lose they twist and squirm out the hole they dug and claim you must have a “man-crush” on the other person”, very lame…YOU are the one that needs to apologize to Grant and me. You started it by ripping and attacking Grant. Talk about who is bullying. You’re the villain here.

You attacked him in the first post with about 90 exclamations, 8 capped words like you’re yelling, saying he knows nothing and manipulates facts, gets paid for asinine statements, you said he acts like he knows everything, that his view of the draft isn’t up to debate because you think the team got faster, REALLY, who are YOU!!..that he just spews his ignorant opinion. Then you say to Grant…Do you see where this is going sony????…misspelled. LMFAO!

I responded that you have mental issues. The fact is, if you really re-read that maniacal post, you’ll say…yeah I was mental. You responded with a long bla, bla, bla post (like all of them) of how after 6 yrs you’re frustrated and he has a job he never earned, a job he’s horrible at. Then you go on with IF, IF the new drafted ILB was 10-15lbs more BS he’d be another NB, PW. And if Grant had nards he’d reply and you’ll expose him. I don’t defend Grant or agree with everything anybody says all the time. Then YOU say why do I spend time underneath his desk and if we are lovers, wow. Do you SEE who is attacking, bullying and rude here. Plus you’re creepy with a statement like… go sew some corpses together. Funny boy but sick.

But you’re a hypocrite…..you are far from a decent human being. You are like the guy tail-gating someone on the freeway and some comes up behind you and tailgates and you flip him off pissed he’s doing it to you but you are tail-gating the guy in front of you. Good for you but not when someone does the same thing you’re doing to you. You attack with rude words, caps, ton of exclamations, belittling someones talent, Physical threats…etc, etc.

So ..you can stop with I shouldn’t attack you, ganging up on you bs. Doesn’t matter if someone has been here 1 day or 10 years. Stop with your the good ol boy system and you’re little boy codes and styles that are a decade outdated, wow! You must be a sheep, do you baa like a sheep?..Do you need a post that agrees with you to feel good. You need a wing man obviously, most sheep do. Your posts are so long with bad spelling in every post, rude comments but more importantly, “the content is wrong” and your posts are disgusting. You also resort to twisting the narrative, things I say as a last resort. You do need to look hard in the mirror.

I spoke of football in every post other than the one I said you’re mental. I debunked your myth when you say IF, IF Warner gained 10-15lb he be like NB, PW..lol..Then since you lost that one you resort to immature little boy tactics and say I must have a man-crush on them too like you say I do with Grant, that’s so typical of a loser. Look boy…you are SO funny I can’t stop laughing, seriously!!!..I also mentioned trading up for Pettis, giving up 74, when he would of fallen to 59 or the 3rd rd was questionable. With 59, SF could of made a move on CB Isiah Oliver that went at 58. I said I hoped the draftees have a great career and McG will turn out good. I said I hope JG has 4k yards/40 td’s and hope SF goes to the playoffs. I also disputed your claim Fleener was a 1st rounder. I hope CB Sherman helps out the DB’s and has a voice as a defensive team leader. I hope the RB’s do well even if they are not big. So I speak plenty if not more football then you!!

Grant is not a pessimist, but do do seem like one……..”hence our frenemy relationship”…wtf is frenemy??..And you are angry and frustrated probably with yourself and Grant. The evidence you’re troubled and angry especially in your first maniacal post to Grant is very obvious. It’s not just Grant’s writing that makes you this way, you should seek some therapy, seriously. And take a writing class, too!!But you give me a good laugh. You really need to take my advice and hope you learned something. I can tell you’re a sad man and much too stubborn and prideful. Your ego will prevent any responses from Grant. You should really apologize. ;)

            2. ED, because I don’t use the apostrophe I misspell a bunch of words????? you must be smarter than my pc’s spell check dude……..it indicates that my only misspelled words are those that lack apostrophes…..( do you even know what an apostrophe is???!)
              so your wrong there…..
Your wrong about our ILB, by all accounts except yours……dudes a stud! Find anyone who says anything negative about him!!!
Pettis is a stud and can play all 3 wr spots and is a legendary punt returner. He is a true pro, comes fro a great family, his father was a pro baseball player and works in the FO for the world champion Astros.
McG is a cheaper, younger, more reliable upgrade, hes better in the run game and and can be counted on to stay in shape.
You keep replying to me…..but you bring no facts, no information and nothing football related.
All you do is talk shi like a little B***h…… and defend grant for some odd reason.

I have play full handles……you use your name. Your a creep bro! keep it moving!
this is usually where I tell as whipes like you where and when you can meet me for your dose of karma ( putting that very nicely) but I don’t want to get banned………

You bring nothing to this blog dude…….
your a nerdy English teacher or something……trying to mix it up with the football crowd.
Your a joke! move along Ed Gein. Go sew some corpses together or something…..

              1. Content is way more important than spelling. I hate typing on my phone and I make a lot of mistakes so I dictate and it makes a lot of mistakes for me. I know how you feel man this used to be a fun place to hang out and it still can be if you don’t pay attention to Grant. He know squat about what he’s talking about. It’s all good…

              2. To bad you don’t know what apostrophes are son. Misspelled words like breed and..”fro” a great family ..and few more but that’s you, fine, wrong again. Main issue is you’re mental and off on predictions and content, the bad writing is secondary, I can care less. BUT you’re just cracking me up, I love laughing out loud to your nonsense, keep it up!! Again your wrong, I didn’t say Warner won’t be a stud and others find a negative about him. Keep trying to twist it. It’s just your asinine comparison that if he’s 15lbs more, he’s another Patrick Willis. I love it, lol. The Pettis trade up to 44 was bad, giving up 74 when he would of fallen to 59 or even 74. I’m not sure about the other picks or have any issues with them other than I think McG will be a good OT, hopefully the others too. You’re the creep with multiple play handles and bringing up corpses, your strange son!

              3. ed, it only took you 5 post b4 you actually brought up anything football related to the table.
                !!!!!
                the 4
first 4 post you simply attacked me dude!!!!! what type of person does that??!!!!
if you don’t agree……move along! keep scrolling!!!! or……..bring the facts and start a FOOTBALL discussion!!!!! that is what this blog is about , no?
4 post of no football info., just insults and attacks!!!! and your calling be son!!!! as if you have moral compass of an adult??!!! I’m 39 pal. I’m no kid.
You fail to realize the concept of this blog……..ill break it down for you….
1.Grant makes absurd statements to stir the pot, rile the crowd
2.ppl get pissed and bash grant…….grant gets his clicks
                3. ppl argue and discuss the topic….hoping they can get grant to chime into the debate.
                4. grant trolls us so often…..that we cant help but gloat and call him out when hes wrong
5.once in a great while….grant will write a master piece of an article…everyone will tell him how great it is ( ‘cuz were all adults here, and we have our integrity and understand the nature of a blog like this……its shock jock mentality…say the most outrageous B.S. to get ppl to pay attention) and its all rainbows and unicorns around here for a while……..then the cycle all starts again.

you see now genius????? My “attack” on grant was a move to get his attention……so hed debate me on his pessimistic view of our draft that I don’t agree with!

This is all staged like pro wrestling dude…..your the only one who dosent know…..and while I was in the middle of my “act” you come out of the stands and really bash me with a metal chair and split my head open!!!!

This is a football blog dude! read if you like…….enter the debate if you like…..but keep it to football! no more play full insults……your just a nasty, ignorant person.

Nasty for the pointless attacks and insults…….ignorant for not understanding how this blog works.
p.s Willis couldn’t cover te’s or rb’s near the end……that was Bowman’s job. I never said Warner was another Willis. Warner does more. I said he has the potential to be Navaro Willis!!! a combo of both! and that if he were 15 pounds of muscle heavier…..and put up the same combine numbers……hed have been taken in the first round, that’s what I said!

              4. “This is all staged like pro wrestling dude…..your the only one who dosent know…..and while I was in the middle of my “act” you come out of the stands and really bash me with a metal chair and split my head open!!!!”

Ed is a plant. You either bladed or the chair shot was a worked shoot, could be both.

My comments about this are satire and should not be taken seriously. I’m just playing the smark role.

              5. Thanks for the dumb comeback and making my day, great laugh….. How about you move on and keep scrolling if you don’t agree with Grant. You dish but can’t take it. But all you do is whine, want a tissue. 39 y.o. and writes a like a 9 y.o… Grant doesn’t stir the pot, that’s fantasy, you’ve been hitting the pipe too much. He doesn’t troll anybody, you do. He doesn’t bother with morons like you, that’s all. Your “act” stinks, stick to your fake wrestling. I split your head wide open with a metal chair, haha..silly man!!..I didn’t trip up your rude act, YOU did!! He wasn’t going to respond to your foolishness anyways and you know it. So here’s some advice, take or leave it.

If you grow a brain and not attack and maybe debate him civilly, your good buddy Grant might respond, maybe. But you can’t, you’re too mental son. Talk about insults, you’re the pot calling the kettle black. You said 3 posts up IF Warner was 250 he’d be a top 10-15 pick… no way is that automatic so that’s wrong. Also, that he’s 15lbs from being Navarro Willis!.. that’s absurd. You “never” threw out the word potential until now, sure anything has potential, nice try. Even if he had the same combine numbers, that doesn’t make him either Willis or Navarro, wow put the pipe down!!. Your full of if-if-if. I’m talking football, your dreaming and assuming a guy adds a little muscle and he’s All-Pro. Thanks for the good laugh buddy.

              6. ed, the gloves are off now you POS. first of all im not turning this into a professor for a grade…. I’m trying to make a point as fast as I can. You clearly are not so intelligent that you should be on here criticizing ppl about anything…..your clearly an effing moron!

Grant should file a restraining order against you RIGHT NOW!!!!! no man should ever go so far out of his way to defend another man he’s not related to!!!

Anytime someone pulls the grammar/spelling/ punctuation card in a sports argument…….they’ve already lost said argument by a wide margin!!

ive interacted with grant MANY TIMES over the years!!!! its morons like you that he’d never give the time of day to!

is your name ed or daren????

you bring nothing to the bog loser!

Warner, in the 3rd round, by all accounts was the best pick we made!!!!!!!!!
what the hell is wrong with you dude!!!! seriously! are you disputing this?????
through all your tasteless insults and pointless attacks……..im not sure what your point even is!!! seriously! is it that Warner is a bad pick? are you upset that I said his name in the same breath of NB and PW ??? you hated our draft and must attack anyone whos reserving judgment????? I don’t get you…..your clearly the angry one.

dude id take your women right off of your arm bro! id eat your lunch and wipe my hands on your shirt….you wouldn’t even say a word to me in real life dude!!!!! and that’s a fact!!!so stop playing the internet bully role bro……its played out!
ps. I don’t smoke a pipe, I smoke cigars. seems like you cant get enough of thagt glass meth pipe though bud

              7. Dunce J/jrs and whatever other creepy handles you have..I laugh at you, you’re so angry boy. You’re so funny too, I love it. You know Grant won’t respond to idiots like you. I didn’t say I didn’t like the draft picks, you try SO hard to twist things you frustrate yourself you’re so wrong, you’ve lost. I just laugh at morons saying a guy JUST drafted is 15lbs away from a top 10-15 pick and being Navarro Willis, All-Pro’s. That said by you, a foolish statement. That’s all.. I hope these new guys do great and have great careers. I hope Jimmy G throws for over 4,000 yards and 40 TD’s and doesn’t get killed. I also hope the 49ers go to the playoffs. You throw plenty of insults, but you can’t take it, it’s not a one way street, so stop crying. Take my advise and debate Grant civilly if you know how which you don’t, you might be surprised. I don’t defend him, I just laugh at morons like you, a lightweight behind a screen. You should have a restraining order you’re so mental and pissy. Thanks for the good laugh son. Go hit your pipe.

              8. one more thing eddie haskel….I don’t car if grants responds or not. thanks for the advice but its unnecessary. Ive debated grant plenty of times….hes hard headed. I enjoy calling him out and gloating when hes proven wrong! I’m also man enough to complement him when he is right or writes a great article…
he was right about Bowman being on his way out the door…
he was wrong about coby Fleener, beat the drum of what a great player he’d be and that we should’ve drafted him first round.
Hes also went on record saying were gonna draft a cb in the first round many times…….AND NEVER BEEN RIGHT!!
Hes wrong about ruben foster deserving to be cut b4 the facts come out….

hes wrong more often than not…..and we let him know.
he does get some things right though………..but hey, even a broken clock is right twice a day

oh, and now you know my name. come get some if you think your tough;)

              9. Yes I know your name..mrs haskel. I’m tough you’re not obviously. You write you don’t “car” if your buddy Grant doesn’t respond to you, lol..that’s BS. You can’t gloat because you don’t prove anything wrong, your wrong. He was right about Bowman. About Fleener, he was just a 2nd rounder and he only gained about 290 yards last year and his rookie year, just 2 TD’s both years, decent in other years. Fleener has been a massive disappointment through two seasons of a five-year in New Orleans with also concussion history, a $36 million contract, managing only 72 catches and five touchdowns in 27 games for the Saints. His release would be a no-brainer move if not for the fact that $3.4 million of his $6.3 million salary for 2018 is guaranteed, per overthecap.com. Many people not just Grant thought SF was going to draft a CB, like Ward , James or Fitz if converted from safety. You should still take my advice and be civil with him. Grant’s not far off on Rueben being cut, he’ll be SO lucky if he’s not cut, I doubt it. You’re wrong more often than not, not him. Thanks for my evening laugh.

You responded with a long bla, bla, post (like all of them) of how after 6 yrs you’re frustrated and he has a job he never earned, a job he’s horrible at. You then call me a POS!!..Do you SEE who is attacking, bullying and rude here. Plus you’re creepy with a statement like… go sew some corpses together.

Also hope Ruben Foster doesn’t get cut but may if the girlfriend statement sticks.

You should really apologize. ;)

      1. Actually Grant knows a lot. Ya know like how two 6’7 DE’s on the field at the same time don’t make for a good defensive front. Although I think I see Armstead as more of a pass rusher coming in on 3rd down.

        1. right james!!! lol! who wants 2 6’8 DT’s in the middle of the field blocking passing lanes.
AA has a perfect storm of issues going against him…..
          1. injuries.
          2. hes a DT or a 3-4 end. neither position is the sack man in said scheme. in both schemes, his job is to take 2 blockers and allow OLB in 3-4 or DE in our new 4-3 to get to the qb
          3. if we were getting pressure from the outside…..the qb would have to step up into the DT’s. we have NO outside rush!

  2. With the injuries, his evaluation is incomplete. Not drafting a Leo probably played a factor too. If he can stay healthy, we should have a talented rotation of fresh players to harass quarterbacks. I don’t think picking up his option guarantees he’ll be on the team in 2019….

    1. Razoreater

You’ve been harping to cut or trade Armstead ever since we mistakenly drafted Solomon Thomas…for what reason other than to get Thomas more snaps, and you’d get to spout your “King” Solomon nickname I cannot fathom. The more Solomon is on the field, the sooner we’ll accept that he was a bad pick…Not so bad that he can’t be used as a back-up, but certainly not as a starter…You do NOT know more than Lynch or Shannahan….and Yes, Armstead will be a 49er in 2019…

  3. The option is only binding for injury, though, meaning the team can still release Armstead before the 2019 league year starts without owing any more money. (per David Lombardi)

    1. ^Exactly this. You would think Grant would get his facts lined up properly before chiming in on this move by the Niners.

      1. Yup. Frankly, I’ve never been an Armstead fan. He’s just not productive. When I heard he had problems with his shoulder dislocating going all the way back to high school I thought it was draft malpractice to select him in the first round. The guy is basically playing with 1 arm. Due to his size he was able to get away with that in high school and to a certain extent in college. That simply isn’t possible in the NFL. When your shoulder dislocates multiple times, the socket become loose and there is no fix for it. BUT, I am happy for him the 49ers picked up his contract. I honestly don’t think he will ever be a big producer but I’m happy for guys who get some protection for injuries. Out of all the major sports, NFL players should get more salary protection if they are injured.

  4. It’s called insurance Grant. There’s this thing called strategy and hedging your bets. Armstead hasn’t lived up to his potential, but may be the best they have right now and when healthy better than anyone they could’ve drafted, sans giving a kings ransom to trade up for Chubb. They drafted Street to be his eventual replacement, low risk/high reward, and if he doesn’t pan out health wise they still have Armstead. If he does they can release Armstead up until March 2019, and they’re off the hook for the Salary (barring an injury that keeps him out the whole 2019 season). Smart move!

    1. Nicely said – that’s sounds to be the most plausible reasoning as to picking up Steads 5th year option I have read as of yet ….. and I have really been doing nothing but reading articles today.

I couldn’t agree with you more

      1. It called using common sense. This duo generally has reasons for their moves and with common sense those reasons can usually be figured out. The same rational could also be applied to their picking up Wards 5th year option. Insurance. Most people on these sites usually only see the individual pieces and fail to see how the fit into the larger picture.

  5. Yep doesn’t make a lot of sense both due to the fact he hasn’t been able to stay healthy and they supposedly drafted his replacements this weekend.

    1. He is 24 years old. Not even had a chance to grow into his body and you have condemned him to being injury prone? What a ridiculous rash to judgement.

      1. Armstead is injury prone. It’s not really debatable. The guy is prone to shoulder injuries. Every time it pops out of socket his chances for future injuries to that shoulder increase. It’s a medical fact.

  6. This is just a wild guess: the 49ers know more about Armstead, and his long-term value, than you do Grant. Plus, they likely also appreciate to a greater extent the need for depth on a football team. Plus, they likely figured that Street has the potential they’re looking for, but has not proven it yet and won’t be able to prove it until after they have to make the final decision on Armstead.

Really, Grant, people are getting sick of this. At this point, no matter what the 49ers say or do, you will criticize them bitterly for it. I used to look forward to reading your column, but now I’m just about ready to give it up. That doesn’t mean you have to be a “homer,” but you should at least try for some objectivity and higher-minded thinking.

Are you just mad because you can’t have the 49ers GM job handed to you in the same way you have your beat writer’s gig?

    1. Your comment rightly critiques Grant’s assessment of this move, but proves him right about what a poor draft pick they made with Street. Now they’ll be overloaded at this position, not to mention the wasted year and possibility the player never fully recovers, when they should have used that 4th round pick on an OL or another position of greater need.

Grant is negative, but he covers the team run by the dumbest owner in sports, until Jed proves otherwise. And hiring a zero experience GM to be Shanahan’s grocery shopper doesn’t inspire my confidence.

      1. You mean to say that you can not see the logical connection between drafting Street and picking up Eric’s option? Street is their long term plan while Eric is short term, one perhaps two years. They are always creating and keeping multiple options open.

  7. The #49ers have added a ton of speed in this year’s draft.

Notable 40 times of a few picks:

    DB Tarvarious Moore – 4.32
    LB Fred Warner – 4.64
    DL Kentavious Street – 4.87
    CB D.J. Reed – 4.51
    DT Jullian Taylor – 4.83

    1. Same guy who Grant loved the day he was drafted, then trashed a couple days later?

    2. Thanks TomD. If the knock on Witherspoon was that he didn’t like to tackle, no such worries with Reed.

  11. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/sports/wp/2017/02/01/kyle-shanahans-offense-borrows-from-his-mentors-but-is-entirely-his-own/?noredirect=on

“The basic principles of the West Coast offense are that you’re going to get the ball out of the quarterback’s hand quickly and you’re going to focus on getting yards after the catch.”

Getting the ball out quick. That and the OZ is why McG is valuable to us.

Focusing on yards after catch. We didn’t have that last year. Enter McKinnon and Pettis.

“You’re going to use screens. You’re going to get the ball into the hands of the running back and treat those throws almost like running plays.”

    This screams McKinnon.

      1. Yes I’m not sure why other aren’t getting this…. i’ve seen a lot of comments on how that trade was a mistake, he was one of the best pass pro tackles in the league. While maybe true he does not fit the scheme, which is a very important piece to Shanny’s OZ system. Which is why I think the OL has improved overall with the addition of Richburg, McG, and Cooper along with Staley holding down the left side.

        1. Even if Brown was not a very good scheme fit, I suspect he would have been the starter this year and Shanalynch would have drafted someone in the second round (and drafted James in first) if not for the reasons given below. I would not be surprised if they had read the riot act to Brown and his agent in December/January about staying fit in the off-season, and his physical conditioning when arriving for the mini-camp was the last straw.

          Per Maiocco:
“The 49ers did not envision Brown as a long-term member of the organization due to concerns about his work ethic, physical conditioning, inconsistent film study and execution of his assignments. A club source told NBC Sports Bay Area that Patriots coach Bill Belichick is fully aware of why the 49ers decided to trade him rather than seek a contract extension.”

          1. — concerns of Brown’s “inconstant film study” and “execution of his assignments” were the final straws…rumors of this stuff were being heard back at 2017’s TC…
            — with the disturbing (at least to me) 2017 offensive stat — 23% of our run snaps stuffed last season (worst in NFC, BTW), the OL needed a total makeover— save for Joe…
            — Tomlinson’s option not being picked up yet shows that yet another OG prospect is needed, even assuming Cooper does OK…
            — Garnett??? Hopefully but unlikely…
            — Jimmy needs good run game support for 2018’s offense to click…
            — Jimmy & Kyle will find it MUCH harder next season to overcome good defenses disrespectful of a run threat…

          2. Everything you ALL know about Brown’s health is SPECULATION

I know one thing …he passed his physical with the almighty NE…

After reading about Garnett …not sure why most are not optimistic to see him play in his new body

  12. If you can’t run the ball, you have no play action. If you have no play action, you’re missing the single most important aspect of Shanny’s offense….

    1. Grant, it appears Shanny has some game changers on offense with the addition of Richie James if Shanny can get him the ball.

      I’m betting he can.

Remember the time Baalke signed Torey James to a 5 yr. $40 mil. K, 22 mil guaranteed, then told the media he was going to run the ball. True to his word, Baalke ran, and ran, and ran, and ran again, never getting Smith the ball ?….In your analysis, this Baalke oversight of a 40 mil dollar player is never mentioned. However, I bet Shanny finds a way to get his players the ball w/o signing them to 22 mil guaranteed.

  13. I look forward to Cassius having “a lean and hungry look” come TC. Per Maiocco:
“Marsh caught wind of Shanahan’s endorsement. The words meant a lot to a player whom Seattle traded and New England cut. Marsh wrote on social media:
”This right here gave me chills and almost brought tears to my eyes. To go from never feeling appreciated and having to prove myself every single day. To knowing my Coaching staff and GM have my back and trust my work ethic and talent is an indescribable feeling. I am so grateful but never satisfied! I will never lose this chip on my shoulder and will continue to grind every single day. Because in the league, any day could be your last! “

    1. More on Marsh from his combine profile…

“2013: Honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection after starting 12 of 13 games. Was tied for second on the team with six sacks. Also had a 2-yard touchdown reception. 2012: Honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection after starting all 14 games. Finished second on the team with eight sacks. Also had a 4-yard touchdown reception. 2011: Played in 12 games and started in eight. Was suspended for two games for an in-game skirmish against Arizona. 2010: Played in 12 games and made four starts.

      1. Of course Marsh has 6 sacks over a 4 year career to go with 48 tackles. Impressive!

  14. I don’t mind picking up Armstead’s option as he does have talent, and now if he lives up to it this year they can keep him without needing to overpay. But I agree it does make the selection of Street a bit odd. And Taylor too. I can only assume this means Ronald Blair’s spot is in extreme jeopardy.

I’m thinking that this year Taylor competes with Blair to be the main backup at big end in base and part of the rotation at DT in nickel. Next year Street is the backup big end and Taylor is a rotational guy/ depth for big end and DT in nickel.

    1. Scooter

What is it that makes Ronald Blair in extreme jeopardy ? If we’re at the point of getting shed of a Dlineman, That Dlineman should be Solomon Thomas….Eventually, he’ll be found out to be the weakest link in the chain (he lacks length) and cannot shed longer, larger Olinemen… Blair is longer, and has been able to hold his own in the rush…Lynch just made a bad choice in last years draft…

  15. Many varied views of the 49ers draft; here and elsewhere.
Some chose it to be one of the better NFC drafts.
    Some panned it.
Unpopularly, I’m not all that offended. Shanny has a plan. I expect competency. Too early to make a prediction, but 50% (8-8) might be attainable. Stay tuned.

  16. In fairness to Grant, he is really criticizing the Street pick more than he is criticizing picking up the Armstead option. The street pick was a head-scratcher.

    1. It was the worst pick of the draft.
He plays their most stacked position and will miss an entire season.
He was a 4th round prospect before he tore his acl. Even Baalke got discounts on his acl selections, getting them about 2 rounds later than they would have been picked if they weren’t injured.
Even that I could understand if he provided a pass rush but he wasn’t really impressive thier either.

      1. Yeah, looks to me like they see Street as a direct replacement for Tank… next year. Strange pick.

      2. A lot of talk was after the first 21 picks, most players were lumped together and not a lot of separation, for what ever reason the organization valued more than others and that still could turn out to be a good thing.

  17. I’m looking forward to seeing how much this offense has evolved, and how prolific it can be with the new chess pieces.

    1. I’m with you. I stated in an earlier post, you don’t beat the Rams by hitting their strengths. You don’t run up the middle, you get outside. And you don’t attack their all pro cb. You attack their 4th and 5yh cb and their 2nd and 3rd safety. And their LB. Kyle has a sleep of speed and talent. Waiting patiently to see it evolve

  18. I have enjoyed this website for years long before Grant arrived.
I enjoy Grant’s bomb throwing to generate interest. He comes from the school of sports writing as his Dad and Glen (Montana should not have planned to have a child during the season, it is a distraction) Dickey.
What I like the most are the comments from the regulars. Many are informative, some are entertaining, some are very funny and some are, well, pretty dumb.
I try to not take this stuff too seriously. As long as the salary cap is not an issue I don’t care if the York’s spend all their money and have to sell the team, maybe even to Eddie D! I do want the Niner’s to get back to the play offs and win some Super Bowls in the next 5-6 years and beat the crud out of the Cowboys and the Rams every year for the next 50 years.
Even if I think its meaningless I enjoy the comments about the draft and am amused at how some people get very worked up, when we have no idea how this will work out.
I would love to see all the draft pundits take the grades from 2012-2015 and put them side by side with grades 3 plus years after each draft to see how accurate they were. I would bet, most were not very accurate. Projecting players from college to the pros is very difficult. Not only is the game different, but seeing inside a player to determine how dedicated they will be after getting a bunch of money is very difficult. I doubt if many saw Frank Gore or Charles Haley having the type of careers they had when they were selected.
Anyway, thanks everyone for the entertainment.

    1. 42
What a cool post. Feeling you, bruh.
      Community.
Grant in all this is……uh..familiar; predictable……slightly disappointing.
“Inside The FortyNiners” is false advertising.

    2. “I would love to see all the draft pundits take the grades from 2012-2015 and put them side by side with grades 3 plus years after each draft to see how accurate they were.”

      I’ll take the Pepsi challenge.

  19. Thanks BT.
This is a fun community isn’t it.
A better name might be “We love the Niners even when they make us crazy.”

I have been a fan since the mid 60’s and there were a lot of down years, but as a fan I always thought things could get better and they did and they have.

  20. I think this was the right move. And have been a proponent of seeing what a healthy Armstead can do, because of the interior pass rush he provides.
With that said t makes me question the Street pick even more.
I guess you have to pretty good to hear out cassius marsh but ‘meh’ might beat out Thomas and Armstead.

    1. street could be a rotation guy in one to two years. Armstead only has two years left. Plus street may fit the new d better than some of the pieces now. Wanting to win now and onto the future.

  21. For anyone that wasn’t already sure of this, Michael Silver is saying the Raiders would definitely have taken McGlinchey at 10. From way he says it sounds like he has solid inside information on that. No surprise of course.

Regardless of what you think of the pick, can’t say the 49ers could have traded back and gotten him.

    1. My big thing when the new administration took over was the o line was a mess. The center is huge in the scheme shannahan likes to run. Richburg is a big up grade. Run tackle like mm is very important. It bothered the organization when brown had surgery and did not play through, I know the guards are questionable but I have more hope for garnet than others on this blog. He has lost around 30 pounds and appears to be motivated, he is smart, wants to be a doctor in the future and went to Stanford. Staley is great but very old in nfl terms.

I still like the direction the organization is going, however concerned how good, eagles, rams , saints, falcons are this year. I hope I am wrong but I see some where along 7-9,8-8, or 9-7. The team has become every body’s darling and their will be no element of surprise. The team is marked as they say.

As long as they keep molding, gelling and adding good players they like, things will be fine. I am glad they have 5 years left on their contracts so this can play out. Did any one else catch lynch’s Remarks that three players stood out on how they commanded a room? They were mm tackle, James the safety and Chubb the running back.

This organization is very clear on what they want to put into place even though it does not always make sense to us the fans and the media. I am glad they have a plan and are sticking to it.

Tomlinson and cooper should be good enough until the right person is found.

    2. I was fine with this pick.
Yes, it was a reach, as almost everyone rated him around 20. However, premium positions go higher than expected almost always.
This year that rule was amplified by the lack of depth at the position. So I understand the desire to get the guy that they feel best allows them to run their system. Especially if they were worried about Landry’s health, didn’t like the linebackers after R. Smith and felt that their safeties could man the spot almost as well as Fitzpatrick or James.

        1. Which game?
The game where Chubb had 1 sack and 3 tackles for loss in 2017
          or
The game where Chubb had 3 sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss in 2016
I wouldn’t say he was shut down. McGlinchey won some and lost some but its nice to see he played much better in 2017 (he didn’t give up the sack).
Interesting notes on the 2016 game
          1. It was a very wet field and Kizer held the ball way to long.
          2. There was a play where appeared to knock Nelson off like a little kid… something I have never seen before.

          1. 2017. Once Drago becomes consistent in his pass pro footwork and balance, he’ll be ready to take over for Joe Staley.

            1. That’s kind of the weird part.
From what I have seen on him, his footwork and balance are good in pass pro… he just occasionally gets beat clean. I’m still fine with the pick as I’ve said, but I see him staying on the right side, where he is at his best. We will need to draft another Tackle in the next two years either way, so I’m ok with picking up a more natural pass blocker to man the left side if McGlinchey proves to be better on the right, as I suspect.
              https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2018/4/17/17222886/2018-nfl-draft-mike-mcglinchey-scouting-report-breakdown-49ers

              1. Consistency

with his punch and feet being insync will improve as a professional. I think he can be at least as good as Solder at LT when is all said and done….

              2. He also got beat cleanly for a sack when the Irish was hammered by the Cardinal late in the season. But IMO that part is mental and correctable. He’s a very good pick.

    3. I liked the pick from the start and knowing that we stole one from the Raiders makes me like it even more.

Grabbing offensive lineman is never sexy and exciting but McGlinchey was good pick and a solid improvement to the offense.

I’d give all the tea in China to know who the team would have taken if The Glinch was already off the board.

      1. Reading between the lines of what Lynch said, it’d probably been either James or Michel.

        1. James would have been great. I was still hoping for either Nelson or Smith before the draft.

          1. From what I’m seeing on Warner, seems like a poor man’s Roquan. Great value pick there imo

    4. Pretty much a given considering the Raiders immediately took the best deal they could find, traded down and then took another OT. Like the others, we will find out how good the McGlinchey pick was as we go along.

  22. Brief switch of topic:
The Jags Owner is buying Wembley Stadium. OK.
He might want to move his team there. Logistical nightmare.
Now he says he’d like to host the Super Bowl there in London.
Great idea! Maybe the World Series and July Fourth Celebration too! Yippee!
But don’t mess with Christmas or Bill O’Rielly will accuse you of stealing it.

    1. Since the winner of the SuperBowl inevitably will be called the “World Champions” shouldn’t it at the very least be played somewhere outside of the United States? ;)

    2. I can’t see a team moving to London or a SB there in the near future but it appears they are really focused on making it an NFL market. I just don’t think you can move beyond the states unless you have a pool of international players. Every NFL player I’ve ever heard comment on the possibility of a team in London has said they won’t move there so it’s not going to be easy to get off the ground.

  23. Armstead does have talent, and I was fine with his selection, because he did have good tape, and he was doing great in the practices. I liked how AA could put a blocker on roller skates to drive him back in the pocket. However, he did focus on the blocker too much, and many times, let the ball carrier run by him while he was engaged.
    .
Then he got injured, and that left a gaping hole in the defense. In 2016, with AA injured, the Niners gave up historically bad amounts of running yards. In 2017, AA was looking solid, but then became injured again. The best ability is availability, and he could not get on the field.
    .
For many players, injuries lower their overall grades, and in this case, it was highlighted by the fact that the Chiefs picked Peters in the next draft spot, who has turned into a pro bowl player. Some say in hindsight, that the Niners whiffed. However, I still liked the pick because they were losing their D line due to retirements and off the field problems.
    .
Guess the FO and coaches still like AA, and the extension is proof, so I will defer to their judgement. However, if he becomes injured again, I will join the chorus of the rest of his detractors.
    .
Still, the selection of Street is not my favorite choice, and I would still prefer a totally healthy player, and not damaged goods.

    1. Ive wanted them to resign him all along.
This year if he can stay healthy I expect him to shine as they are finally moving him to his more natural position of Big End. He has also been very good as an interior rusher and should continue to excel in that role this year for the 49ers. Sadly with no good edge rushers teams will continue to avoid sacks by moving the pocket or by just staying back as we have no one that should force them to step up.
Hopefully with improved db play, we will get home a few more times though.

      1. Armstead hasn’t been able to stay healthy though and as Houston pointed out, he came into the league with a bad shoulder. They have the money to absorb the option year regardless but I don’t see the logic in keeping a player who can’t stay on the field. I’d rather use the 9 mill to sign somebody who can. He’s always had the size and strength but even when he plays he’s not a stand out. He’s a decent player who has tantalizing potential but can’t reach it due to injury. I guess we keep hoping this will be the year he stays healthy and puts it all together.

        1. I think the better way of looking at this deal is that if he plays well they keep him without needing to get into a bidding war. While if he struggles they can still let him go – contract only guaranteed for injury right now.

          1. That’s why I wanted him resigned. To control his rights if he does well.
If we were tight against the cap and he could potential stop us from signing a player, I would have been for cutting him. But given the flashes he has shown as a pass rusher, when healthy, I wanted to give him one more chance to succeed here.

            1. Which player has the highest trade probability before the deadline. I’m gonna say our NB, Williams.

      2. I hope Saleh plays him to his strengths. Maybe coach him to bat down more balls. Utilize his height.
        .
I also like Armstead for his bonding with Buckner. Teamwork and cohesiveness will allow them to be more effective.
        .
Sounds like with the Niners not bothering to draft a pass rusher early in the draft, they are all in with AA, and the extension proves it. Both Buckner and Armstead will help collapse the pocket.
        .
I agree with your DB comment.

      3. I still get confused with this new defensive front. So will we be seeing Solomon and Arik on the field on base downs or do they play the same position?

        1. Leo,

They will be on the field together in base – Thomas (Leo) and Armstead (Big End). The question will be what happens in Nickel and obvious passing situations because both of them are better pass rushers inside. It will be one of them along with Buckner and then Marsh and Attaochu I would guess or maybe they have one of them stay outside, but it wouldn’t be making the best use of their strengths.

          1. If I recall correctly Lynch said ahead of the draft that Thomas can play some big end in nickel too. So I think Thomas will play some LDE in nickel as well as some DT.

            1. so if Thomas plays the LDE in nickel just from where will the sacks and QB pressures come????? Buckner gets doubled and that leaves one rusher on the offside who supposedly can pressure the pocket – Marsh, the Charger FA or Elvis? that’s not enough.

              1. Don’t know. I expect Thomas to be better this year but like everyone else I think he is best as an inside rusher.

          2. Interesting. I saw Chris Biederman make a starting front 7 prediction. Base seems very strong agains the run, that’s for sure.

So is the SAM position to be a pass rusher as well, or do they just have clean-up duty

            1. SAM in base is more of a traditional OLB. They will get some rush opportunities but will mostly be tasked with covering short zones against the pass.

            2. Leo,

The SAM is usually there to stop the run or to drop in coverage. Obviously it’s predicated on the formation, but the SAM isn’t used as a pass rusher except in certain blitz packages.

  24. The more I hear from Mt. McGlinchy the more I like the kid. He sounds way mature than his years and seems to have the right mental make up to be a successful pro. When he was asked on KNBR to describe himself, his answer was “Tough, smart, and finishes blocks”. Sounds like a young Staley. He appears a little rangy and could probably put on 5 lbs of upper body muscle mass without any sacrifice on athleticism. Maiocco also has a podcast with him.

  25. Cosell on Tavarius Moore: “Fascinating prospect”

    http://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/greg-cosell-raves-about-49ers-third-round-pick-moore-kid-fascinating-prospect

    From the article:

“I really, really like (him) and I watched him late in the process because I was told about him,” Greg Cosell said on KNBR 680 on Monday. “This kid is an explosive athlete. He ran a 4.32 and his vertical jump is over 38 inches.

“This kid’s a premium athlete. He has basically unmatched size, speed, explosiveness as a profile,” Cosell added. “I really liked him. Now, that doesn’t mean he’s gonna come in and be an All-Pro in his rookie season. but I think this kid is a fascinating prospect.”

    1. Where does Cosell get off saying that playing at Southern Miss hurt his draft stock? That statement has no substantiation and is just a two cent Cosell conjecture. Surely did not hurt Ray Guy’s or Brett Favre’s draft stock. Based on Cosell’s hypothesis, playing at the University of Buffalo also hurt Mack’s draft stock. USM probably plays a higher level of ball than Buffalo. Cosell still is trying to figure out if that dead pig bladder is pumped with air or stuffed with rice. Speaking of Rice, I guess playing at Mississippi Valley State probably killed Jerry’s draft stock, too. And for that matter, according to this Cosell, all of those African-Americans like Walter Payton and the dozens of other first rounders like Gene Upshaw who are in the Hall of Fame at Canton probably had their draft stock hurt by playing at HBCUs. STUPID COMMENT, GREG

      1. “USM probably plays a higher level of ball than Buffalo.”

Is that supposed to be a joke? If not, you’re the joke.

        1. #80 – the joke is Cosell’s ludicrous comment about how playing at Southern Miss hurt the kid’s draft stock. if the kid had attended Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Clemson, etc. who knows if he would have ended up as a starter and never would have had the opportunity to show his skills as he was afforded by starting at Southern Miss.

          1. I’m not disputing your overall point. But saying that USM probably plays a higher level of ball than a NFL team is well, ludicrous. Way more ludicrous than what Cossel said.

            1. #80,

He’s referring to the University of Buffalo where Khalil Mack played I believe.

            2. OMG – Have a clue!!!!!! UNIVERSITY OF BUFFALO BULLS is where Mack played. He is #52 for the RAIDERS

  26. A lot of excuses for Armstead out there… I suspect the same will be said of Thomas if he is still not producing this time next year. Thomas taken in the top 5 should not only produce he should dominate. If Thomas was picked in the second round or even late first this might not be a topic, but Lynch selected someone that rose late and got a lot of hype. A tweener… so it is not Thomas’s fault, but the spotlight is on. Niners selected 3 DL in 3 years. Only one is panning out. These are the facts the Niners are facing right now.

I sick of give him time. He is playing out of position… blau blau blau …Either you are a baller or not!!!

    Go Niners!

    1. If the “Niners want to see what they have with Armstead,” they should be in a different business because all they have had to do is put on the tape from Armstead’s first day in Santa Clara. They have access to practice tape, pre-season game tape and regular season game tape. The eye in the sky doesn’t lie!!!!! He is what he is, and all the wishing and hoping won’t change it.

      1. He’s playing a new position. They don’t know what they have in Arik as a Big End.

  27. it’s called playing football; it’s not rocket science or brain surgery…….call it the “big end,” “closed end” or “base end.” so what. don’t let the jargon and the terminology cause paralysis from analysis.

      1. Very true.
One is closer to a DT or 3-4 DE (who kicks inside on passing downs) and one is closer to an outside Linebacker (who plays DE on passing downs). The roles and skillsets and body types required to play the roles are very different… Sure there is the occasional unicorn that can do it but they are very rare.

    Thor Nystrom – 2
    Chris Trapasso – 2
    R.J. White – 2
    Chad Reuter – 1

    1. “Thor”, that’s an awesome name…. i feel like with a name like that you have a lot to prove.

    1. As one does after the 49ers select a player, I have gone back and watched Pettis in more detail. Have to admit I was a little low in my evaluation of him. He is better than I originally thought. Maybe some homerism in there now he is a 49er, but I don’t think so – on further viewing he did grow on me. Still think #44 was too high for him, but can see why Shanahan wanted him.

      1. That catch in the 4th video was sick, and the cuts he demonstrated in the route made my knees ache. I had him in that 2-3 range, right behind Miller. I thought Shanny would like him, but not to the extent shown by the price they paid. Word on the street was the Packers were salivating for him, but we were hungrier. He may not be a great blocker, but he’s tenacious. He might not be the fastest but his vision, body control and intelligence more than compensate. I’m exited about what he can become in this offense….

        1. Tbh, I don’t know where this idea his deep speed is questionable comes from. He is plenty fast. And it is instant acceleration too – not a build up speed guy. Like OBJ. Pettis was able to get a lot of separation deep due to his speed, acceleration and footwork. His speed was really on show in his punt returns – easily able to get the corner. So I don’t think he is going to have any trouble with his speed in the NFL.

          1. Should have clarified. 4.3 speed. He doesn’t have it. Does he have enough? Absolutely.

            1. Based on what I saw on film I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he has sub-4.4 speed when fully healthy.

              1. We’ll find out soon enough. Gonna be a long summer. Hope Grant is embedded so we get first hand insights throughout camp.Pettis did saythat when healthy, he can run a 4.37-second 40….

              2. I think he’ll be Dante’s inferno. Our opponents will be going through the 9 circles of hell.

              3. Dante’s Inferno averaged 15 yards a catch with Browning, while Harrison had McNabb.

        2. “Word on the street was the Packers were salivating for him”

And of course GB wouldn’t admit that after the fact. Many pundits were surprised they drafted two CBs high.

          1. After they missed out on Pettis, they waited until day 3 before they drafted 3 receivers to compensate.

            1. Ha! It takes 3 WRs to equal what Pettis can do. Love his versatility, his route running, his separation, his hands, his work ethic. It’s easy to see why Shanny coveted him.

        3. I have watched this guy give Stanford DBs and ST a headache for the last 3 seasons. He’s very promising for Shanny’s offense.

    2. He is a good player and I’ve seen a lot of him, but he was taken too high imo and they also gave up a good pick to do it. He should be a good fit in the offense though and he is a great punt returner.

    3. Something I noticed when watching Pettis (and Ross last year) is that Browning is very overrated. Both Pettis and Ross had to come back to the ball many times. Now Pettis gets to play with an accurate QB. And when JG throws an occasional bad ball, Dante will be able to help him out.

    4. Thanks for this Scooter, great breakdown. I can see why Shanny liked him so much. What’s weird, at least to me, he doesn’t look like a quick-twitch athlete. He almost looks kinda slow and little too lean. However, with that kind of production on the field quick-twitch and speed seem to be there. I like him, in 2-3 years will be a very good offensive and ST piece.

      1. My pleasure Leo.

Personally I was quite impressed with his acceleration. I think athletically that’s one of his biggest strengths.

  29. http://www.sacbee.com/sports/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/article207685759.html

“The 49ers drafted only one player, Pita Taumoepenu, at the position last year. General manager John Lynch said Taumoepenu, who was 6-1 and 243 pounds at the time of the draft, was a little smaller than ideal. But the 49ers liked his traits. “You need someone with great speed and you need someone with relentless effort,” Lynch said. Taumoepenu also had a 6.91-second time in the three-cone drill at the combine in 2017, the second-fastest for an edge player that year.”

    3-Cone
    Pita 6.91
    Chubb 7.37
    Davenport 7.20
    Hubbard 6.84
    Key 7.16
    Landry 6.88

    1. If Pita T can become a good contributor as a pass rusher that would be huge.
