49ers-Rams live blog: First quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers Week 10 home game against the St. Louis Rams. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis.

1:23 The Rams win the toss and defer. The 49ers will receive.

1:26 Ted Ginn Jr. returns the opening kickoff from the back of the end zone to the SF 20 yard line.

1:28 The 49ers go three-and-out on their opening drive. Frank Gore lost a yard on first down, Alex Smith held on to the ball too long and ran into a sack on second down, and on third and 13, Smith completed a screen to Gore, who gained a couple of yards. Andy Lee punts. The Rams will start their first drive at their 34 yard line.

1:33 The Rams drive down the field in six plays for a touchdown. Brian Quick knocked Culliver to the ground at the line of scrimmage and Goldson was late rotating to help on the 36-yard TD pass from Bradford. Steven Jackson set up that pass by running four times in a row for 23 yards and two first downs. 7-0 Rams with 9:38 in the first quarter.

1:45 Alex Smith converts a third-and-six throwing to a wide open Michael Crabtree. A few plays later on third and two, Greg Roman calls a Gore run up the middle on third and two, and he loses two yards. Terrible third down call by Roman. Rams ball at their 7 yard line. I’m betting they hand the ball off to Steven Jackson on first down.

1:47 Isaac Sopoaga is out and Ricky Jean Francois is in.

1:48 Steven Jackson just ran through a huge hole for a 7-yard touchdown run. 14-0 Rams. The 49ers look horrendous so far. The defense can’t stop the run or pressure Sam Bradford, and the offense has converted just one third down. Vic Fangio has Tarell Brown covering Amendola in the slot, perhaps because Rogers can’t cover him. But it doesn’t seem like Brown can cover Amendola, either. Brown gave up a 13-yard catch to Amendola one play before the touchdown. 1:47 left in the first quarter.

1:57 Ginn fumbles on the return by the 49ers recover at their 22 yard line. A lot of pressure on Greg Roman and the 49ers offense right now.

2:01 Vernon Davis catches a six-yard pass on third and six, and Gore follows that with a 11-yard run around the left end. He bounced off James Laurinaitis in the hole.
