49ers @ Rams live blog: Second quarter

ST. LOUIS — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers’ Week 4 Thursday night road game against the Rams. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

6:11 The 49ers are flagged for illegal formation on the punt so they must re-punt.

6:12 Austin runs around and goes nowhere and fumbles and recovers it. Rams’ ball at their eight.

6:17 Patton has a foot injury and his return is questionable.

6:18 Austin drops a first-down catch on third-and-10. The Rams will punt at midfield.

6:19 Touchback.

6:22 Gore breaks off a beautiful 27-yard run up the and then immediately gets subbed out of the game. Next, James loses a yard and then gains a yard and then it’s third-and-ten. The 49ers burn a timeout to prevent a delay of game.

6:22 Kaepernick throws a 20-yard TD pass to Boldin and the Rams are challenging it. They think he went out of bounds by the goal line.

6:30 Boldin’s right heel went out of bounds at the 3 yard line. I don’t think it’s even a first down.

6:31 The refs disagree with me. Touchdown 49ers. 7-3 49ers with 6:22 left in the first half.

6:33 Touchback. Rams start at their 20.

6:37 Bradford throws to the end zone on third-and-one, Brock tips it and Whitner picks it off in the end zone.

6:41 It’s the two-minute warning. Second-and-three at the 49ers’ 40. Kaepernick has completed his last five passes but he still has not completed a pass to a wide receiver other than Boldin.

6:42 Finnegan has a thigh injury and his return is questionable.

6:45 Gore rips off another long run, this one for 17 yards, and then Kaepernick completes a 20-yard pass to Boldin on the right sideline but the refs are reviewing it.

6:46 It looks like Boldin got both feet in bounds.

6:48 I’m wrong again. The refs say Boldin never had complete control of the ball. Second-and-ten at the St. Louis 43.

6:51 Gore runs up the middle for a yard on third-and-one. The refs are reviewing the spot of the ball.

6:53 The refs reverse their call. It’s third fourth down and half a yard. The 49ers are going for it.

6:55 Gore breaks through the line and scores. Touchdown. That was easy. 14-3 49ers with 37 seconds in the first half. Remember, the 49ers get the ball to start the second half.

7:00 Brooks sacks Bradford on second-and-10 and the Rams’ left tackle Jake Long is injured.

7:02 The Rams go three-and-out and the 49ers call timeout with 12 seconds left.

7:03 Williams makes the fair catch at the 49ers’ 39. Four seconds left.

7:05 Jake Long has a knee injury and his return is probable.

7:05 Dawson attempts a fair-catch kick and misses badly. 14-3 49ers at halftime.
