49ers roster cuts live blog

1

This is the live blog for the roster cuts the 49ers will make Friday and Saturday. I will update this with breaking news as Niners trim their roster down to 53 players.

11:40 a.m. The 49ers cut quarterback Matt Barkley, according to Aaron Wilson. I doubt another will sign Barkley, which means the Niners probably will be able to sign him during the season if they want him.

1:50 p.m. The 49ers cut linebacker Shayne Skov, according to Matt Maiocco. No surprise here. The 49ers signed Skov off the street a few weeks ago.

1:51 p.m. The 49ers cut fullback Tyler McClosky, according to Maiocco. I expect the Niners will try to sign McClosky to their practice squad if he clears waivers, which he probably will.

1:52 p.m. The 49ers cut running back Kapri Bibbs, according to Eric Branch. Bibbs became expendable about 30 minutes after they traded for him. That’s when the Niners traded up to draft Joe Williams.

2:25 p.m. The 49ers cut center Tim Barnes, according to Matt Barrows. This move surprises me. I thought Barnes was safe. Now, it seems undrafted rookie Eric Magnuson will make the team. How many rookies total do you think will make it?

2:28 p.m. Cornerback Will Davis out, per Branch. Davis intercepted a pass Thursday night, but he never had a realistic chance to make the team.

2:35 p.m. The 49ers just announced they have released the following players:

  • DL Leger Douzable
  • OL Andrew Gardner
  • RB Tim Hightower
  • WR Louis Murphy

The 49ers also announced they have waived the following players:

  • OL Andrew Lauderdale
  • WR Tim Patrick
  • OL Norman Price
  • K Nick Rose
  • S Vinnie Sunseri

2:58 p.m. The 49ers waived/injured Will Redmond and Prince Charles Iworah, per Maiocco. Redmond was a third-round pick last year. He tore his ACL in college and missed his rookie season. This is another reminded that most athletes don’t recover from ACL surgery.

8:50 a.m. The 49ers released veteran defensive lineman Quinton Dial, per Maiocco. This move surprises me. I would have thought the Niners could have traded Dial. He almost certainly will sign with another team soon.

9:15 a.m. The 49ers released veteran defensive tackle Chris Jones, per Barrows. Most people expected either Jones or Dial would make the team,  the Niners cut them both. They must really like Sen’Derrick Marks, whom they signed a couple weeks ago, or they plan on signing someone who gets cut today. Any guesses?

11:25 a.m. The 49ers have placed RB Joe Williams on the Injured Reserve list with and ankle injury, according to Tom Pelissero. Williams is not eligible to come back later this season because he won’t be on the initial 53-man roster. He suffered this ankle injury during the final preseason game. I didn’t realize it was so serious.

11:48 a.m. The 49ers have released WR Jeremy Kerley, per Maiocco. This move means the 49ers trust Trent Taylor to be the primary slot receiver, and plan to keep undrafted rookie wide receiver Victor Bolden Jr. to return punts and kickoffs.

11:52 DE Ronald Blair will make the final roster and then immediately go on I.R. with a thumb injury, per Maiocco. Blair will be eligible to return to the team during the season.

11:53 The 49ers have waived TE Blake Bell, per Maiocco. The Niners could bring Bell back on the practice squad if he clears waivers, which he probably will.

11:55 The 49ers have cut CB Asa Jackson, per Maiocco. This means CB Keith Reaser probably will make the team.

12:05 The 49ers waived undrafted rookie OL J.P. Flynn, per Barrows. The team’s nine O-linemen probably will be Joe Staley, Laken Tomlinson, Daniel Kilgore, Brandon Fusco, Trent Brown, Zane Beadles, John Theus, Garry Gilliam and Eric Magnuson.

12:09 The 49ers waived undrafted rookie OL Darrell Williams, per Barrows. No surprise.

12:25 The 49ers will announce their 53-man roster at 1:00. In the meantime, here’s a guess at what it will be:

  1. QB Brian Hoyer
  2. QB C.J. Beathard
  3. RB Carlos Hyde
  4. RB Matt Breida
  5. RB Raheem Mostert
  6. FB Kyle Juszczyk
  7. TE George Kittle
  8. TE Logan Paulsen
  9. TE Garrett Celek
  10. TE Cole Hikutini
  11. WR Pierre Garcon
  12. WR Marquise Goodwin
  13. WR Aldrick Robinson
  14. WR Trent Taylor
  15. WR Victor Bolden Jr.
  16. OL Joe Staley
  17. OL Laken Tomlinson
  18. OL Daniel Kilgore
  19. OL Brandon Fusco
  20. OL Trent Brown
  21. OL Zane Beadles
  22. OL John Theus
  23. OL Garry Gilliam
  24. OL Eric Magnuson
  25. DL DeForest Buckner
  26. DL Arik Armstead
  27. DL Solomon Thomas
  28. DL Elvis Dumervil
  29. DL Earl Mitchell
  30. DL D.J. Jones
  31. DL Sen’Derrick Marks
  32. DL Pita Taumoepenu
  33. DL Aaron Lynch
  34. DL Ronald Blair
  35. LB Dekoda Watson
  36. LB Eli Harold
  37. LB NaVorro Bowman
  38. LB Reuben Foster
  39. LB Ray Ray Armstrong
  40. LB Brock Coyle
  41. S Eric Reid
  42. S Jimmie Ward
  43. S Lorenzo Jerome
  44. S Jaquiski Tartt
  45. S/CB Adrian Colbert
  46. CB Rashard Robinson
  47. CB Dontae Johnson
  48. CB K’Waun Williams
  49. CB Ahkello Witherspoon
  50. CB Keith Reaser
  51. K Robbie Gould
  52. P Bradley Pinion
  53. LS Kyle Nelson

1:08 p.m. The 49ers have placed OL Joshua Garnett on season-ending I.R., per Maiocco.

  1. I called Beathard beating out Barkley earliest, and was the first to suggest they go with only 2 quarterbacks, were that to come to fruition.

    1. Wonder if they have thier eye on other teams QB cuts.

A report on KNBR showed the 49ers were aware of Cleveland’s pending release of CB, Hayden, before it happened…..The report went on to say that the 49er FO is completely aware of who will be released on Saturday, and are ready to pounce on those players targeted and have underlined them as of now.

      1. I believe they are still unhappy with their OG’s and Db positions.

Everyone knows the quickest line from pt. A to pt. B is thru the guards to the QB.

Carolina is like Denver with a stalwart D-Line so Shanahan will shore up these areas priority one.

      1. But, but, but… Barkley looked great against the 49ers defense last year…. oh, wait — never mind. ;-)

        1. After watching Lynch go against 2nd and 3rd string players last night I came away feeling that the Org was showcasing him around the league for a possible trade.
So to answer your question; Yes.
John Lynch may be fielding calls from other teams even at the writing of this post.

  2. Hope we don’t regret cutting the Barkster. The thought of Beathard starting is scary as hell. He barely looked functional last night in 4th preseason game. I question his accuracy.

    1. But, But, Seb picked Barkley to beat out Hoyer, and now the rookie has taken Barkley’s job….It takes a big man to admit error, will you step to the plate, Sebby ?

  3. I heard somewhere the 49ers could re-sign him in a few weeks, avoiding roster compensation but still have him for the year.

  4. I think Barkley may go to another team. Jags make sense, since they have Bortles .
    .
Niners should scour the waiver wire for his replacement. They should look at Cooper Rush, Kevin Hogan, Joe Callahan, Davis Webb or Garrett Grayson, if any of those become available.

Another among the long list of USC QB’s that underwhelmed in #NFL. Dating back to the ’70’s, Carson Palmer is the only 1 that made it big.

Jets trading DL Sheldon Richardson to Seattle for WR Jermaine Kearse and draft considerations, per source.

      1. Schefter sounds like its a done deal. Our sketchy (but hopeful) guards better eat their Wheaties.

      2. Schefter – “In recent seasons, Jets discussed a Sheldon Richardson trade with Dallas, Denver, others. Seattle gets it done today.”

Sounds like Richardson is a SeaRoid. Jets tanking for #1 overall going full blast.

        1. So they get Richardson for a receiver they had no room for and a 2nd round pick. Great trade for Seattle. Richardson has had trouble with motivation in NY recently but he will be a stud with the Seahawks imo.

          1. Seattle follows the method I’ve prescribed a number of times, even though most don’t agree with me. They routinely trade 1st and 2nd round picks for established players. They build through the draft and trades/free agency, maybe not quite equally but more so than most teams. You’ll counter with they are a relatively mature team that needs just a few experienced players to stay at the top. Maybe, but I think the niners can benefit from this well. In fact, they already have with players Shanalynch has brought in. The Seahags have been at the top of the division now going on 7+ years. Maybe it’s not a bad way to do things [or maybe they just do it to piss me off :)}

            1. I agree with your assessment on building a playoff team.
              .
However, the Niners were 2-14, and it is a full rebuild. They let around 20 players go, and will have signed over 20 FA players. They hit a grand slam in the draft, and are poised for improving with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds in 2018.
              .
Finding UDFAs like Breida, Jerome, Bolden and Hikutini is a bonus, and a testament to the acumen of the scouting and personnel departments.
              .
I, too am frustrated, and would love to see the Niners surprise them in the Clink.

              1. Witherspoon looks more like a bunt attempt that dribbles foul…not exactly part of a grand slam draft…

              2. I think he is a long term project, but he has the size and speed they are looking for.
                .
King Solomon is a wise selection, and they Ninja’d Foster, so they are the grand slam I am talking about. Looks like CJB may be a good choice, and J Williams, Trent Taylor, Pita, Colbert and DJ Jones may all make the team.

    1. Just picked up on that. Seattle extremely active this morning. Traded pick (undisclosed) to New England for CB Justin Colman.

The Pats have been active in player-for-player trades. Smart teams following suit? Becoming league trend? (hello Seb)

    1. 49ers were ahead of the Seahags and Pats with their acquistion of a 1st Rounder and 4th rounder, only giving up a 5th rounder……49ers moving forward, Go Niners !!!

        1. Alright, so here’s my call:
          > It’s going to be hot in Northern California tomorrow <
I'll check in in 24 hours

  7. I’ve got a question for anyone that knows. We have the #2 claim on waiver wire. How much time do the 49ers have to make that claim? Is there a clock ticking similar to the draft as the Browns time expires?

    1. NFL HQ uses 15 minute sand-filled hourglasess. Some nondescript intern is responsible for turning them over–one hour glass per waived player. That’s a lotta hourglasses.

      1. Wouldn’t their have to be a room large enough to hold 2,000 Hour Glasses for Saturday’s players waived ?

          1. What about Trump Towers…..Seb and The Donald could discuss women’s rights and watch those hour glasses ?

            1. Trump would get the full treatment from me. He would be reduced into a gibbering buffoon.
              .
Oh wait, he already is a gibbering buffoon. I would reduce him into a blithering bloviator.

              1. Seb– Trump’s treatment giver, full treatment that is…

Secret Service, meet Mr. Legend, they’ll want to know just what “the full treatment” really means…good luck with that…

              2. tjf, I never threatened him with violence, but I would engage him like I do with many others on this site, and he would soon devolve into spewing expletives.

              3. I must admit, a twitter joust between the two of you might be entertaining…for a few minutes.

Secret Service will still want to talk to you about your gift of “the full treatment” to POTUS.

Know any good federal criminal lawyers? 9th District Federal Court, San Francisco.

              4. tjf, Trump has a lot more worries than engaging a poster on this blog site.
                .
He should be more worried about Mueller, since he just accessed his tax records. Deep Throat said to follow the money, so Trump may be in an impeachment fight soon. Bet he will try to pardon himself.

              5. Trump operates in a different reality, He thinks he can do a quid pro quo with Arpaio, exchanging support for a pardon. The courts may find that is a subversion of justice, and an abuse of power, both impeachable offenses.

    2. Razor
I don’t think the waiver procedures apply to TC cuts. I think it’s instant freedom.
I could be wrong on that.

  8. If multiple teams place a claim on a waived player, the team with the highest waiver claim (worst record) wins.

FYI teams have a 24 Hr. window to the place the claim once said player is released.

      1. I remembered that Niner- Bear game in 2015. Gould missed 2 field goals and an extra point to tie it. I think he missed his second FG on the last play of the game, that would have won the game.
        .
Rose has kicked a 70 yard FG. His main weakness is accuracy.
        .
Guess I will root for Gould to go for the Gold, and hope the Niners go bold and will not have to kick many FGs.

  9. I was on the Beathard band wagon early. The morning after he was drafted I posted that I thought he might be the QB of the future but I don’t believe he is ready to be the 9ers #2 this year. I hope they are able to pick up a veteran #2 tomorrow and keep Beathard as their #3.

  10. I think we are in the process of trying to trade several players. Most of the cuts will come later today.

    1. Would be unfortunate if the greater Bay Area (including Santa Clara) had a massive power outage about now–lasting late into the night. Wonder if some teams have contingency plans for events that are critically dependent on real time communication?

  11. 24 hours. I think it would be interesting to have an article explaining some of the strategy that goes into this time frame. Such as whether they wait to see if another team reveals their intentions with a player early, and how it affects the process….

    1. Sounds like a call for top shelf investigative journalism. Anyone we know who can pull that off?

The statement may be true but I’m not sure that’s the best way for him to clear his name.

    1. “I nailed the McCloskey cut.”

He was such a lock for the team too, nobody saw that one coming. What do you have next for us, the sun will rise again tomorrow? ;)

      1. It’s the technique refined by Sebbie and poached by Captain Obvious… Just call out the obvious!

      2. It was a joke in response to Razor calling the Barkley cut. Barkley was never a lock either. Sorry, I forgot the smiley face.
        :-)

        1. I kinda thought that might be the case so I made sure to include mine so you knew I was teasing.

        2. How about something more difficult. Predicting whether Blair Hikutini or Jackson make the team. I say they all do.

            1. I think they will gamble with Pita, because of the glut of players.
              .
I think Dial will be traded. Maybe to a team that just had an injury to a D lineman.

      1. Yep. That’s what their analytics told them a 2nd round pick is worth. Actually, I like having an idea of how much these draft picks are worth in cap space, but am glad it’s not our team conducting the research.

        1. the breaks really went his way the season he had to fill in for Manning….made him a wealthy guy. A case of being on a great team and doing what your OC tells you, now millions…

    1. Youth movement.
Letting Hightower and Bibbs go after signing / trading for them shows no cya in Shanny. Brutal competition. Good sign.

      1. hope they took care of Hightower pay-wise…he effectively was part of the RB coach staff for Hyde, Williams, Brieda, etc.

  13. 2:32 p.m. — The 49ers announced they have waived/injured cornerback Will Redmond and cornerback Prince Charles Iworah.

2:32 p.m. — The 49ers announce they have released the following veterans, in addition to those previously reported: running back Tim Hightower, defensive lineman Leger Douzable, offensive lineman Andrew Gardner, wide receiver Louis Murphy.

      1. Maybe not to you guys but when Shanny spoke so highly of him this offseason and rewarded him with a free agent contract, it is surprising he was cut.
For being touted as a quality system fit guy, it sure is a shock to see him passed over for 2 guys who have not played a real down in the NFL.
        That’s just me.

    1. Hightower is a shock?

This is a young team building for the future and Hightower might have 1 or 2 years left.

      1. and now I wonder if Hightower had actually been signed on as help to RB coaching staff? If you’re putting in a new system, it’s good to have a HB that knows it and can demo the timing, styles, etc.– to fit the scheme the Oline is working on, even now…

          1. Hightower as coaching assistant while still competing for 53 spot– point of post missed W-I-D-E left…

      2. He also got hurt already. Not a good sign for a reliable RB. He’s not great. It
Means they’re keeping Breida and Williams.

    1. Agree on the cuts. The only surprise is that we haven’t had any trades or heard of any trade talks.

          1. I would think that they will wait til after the cuts, and peruse the lists. Do not think that anyone would give anything of value because there will be a flood of candidates.

  14. Seattle made a good trade except for 1 variable – how are they going to fit the salary under the Cap ? Sheldon Richardson carries a salary hit of $12,4 million. Means Seattle is possibly $10 million over the Cap.
Seattle also traded for a DB, does this mean maybe Richard Sherman is traded later today, tomorrow ?
I propose Aaron Lynch & a 4th round draft choice acquired from Pittsburg to Seattle for Richard Sherman.
Now that would immediately increase the talent level of the 49er Defense & a 9-7 prediction may not be a reach.

    1. They are restructuring the contracts of some of their players – already have restructured Doug Baldwin.

I mentioned trading for Sherman about a week ago. However, Sherman has already said that he would only accept a trade to a playoff-bound team – so I don’t think it would happen. I don’t know what kind of relationship he has with Saleh, though.

    2. Better idea….

Hold onto Lynch…our best edge rusher, and trade Jimmy Ward and a conditional fourth for Richard Sherman

      1. He sold them on his propensity to cut players on the team bus. Goodell appreciates bloodthirsty types.

        1. the implication, if you recall, was NFL F.O. job given to him upon your referral, since you are holding on to a lot of angst regarding Trent, why don’t you tell us about it…

          1. tjf, I am wanting to clear the air of all the Baalke stench.
            .
I would much rather talk about how JL and KS are like a breath of fresh air.
            .
Goodell and Baalke are like peas in a pod. They did not need me to get together.

              1. And, as you have stated at 5:37pm, “I would much rather talk about JL and KS”

This seems to be a healthy admission on your part Seb…

So no more Baalke excuses? Going forward– no need to bring up Baalke or his “mistakes” anymore, right?

Focused solely on new regime, new systems, new players….so you can let go now, it’s ok….

How do you feel about that?

            1. The question should also include ” how did Goodell ever get hired by the NFL?”. People tend to look for others like themselves. As Seb said. Goodell and Baalke are kindred spirits.

            2. tjf, the stench of Baalke lingers, and Cassie keeps it going. Maybe you should talk to her.
              .
There is an adage- Those who do not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it. Reminding posters about what Baalke did is just reinforcing what not to do.

              1. I think this “stench” you keep referring to over, and over, and over….psychosomatic?
Have you had a screening yet with your mental health provider? A visit to the doc is L-O-N-G overdue.
Reminding posters obsessively about Trent goes beyond a history lesson for JL and KS.
It’s just plain unhealthy, call your provider, make the appt., please, for all of us, we’re all concerned (well, maybe not Cassie)

              2. we could even start up a Kickstarter to help you with the co-pay. Even Cassie might put her 2 cents in…

        1. Cassie; the Mouth of Sauron, ‘knew the mind of Sauron (Baalke), and was far more cruel than any orc.’

          1. he ‘s rehearsing for his big ComiCon debut as a Lord ‘O Rings character, what a renaissance man…
oil rigs, 3 ton stones, prophecy powers, astoundingly obvious football knowledge passed off as HFL insider wisdom– what can’t he do?

  15. Adam Schefter

    @AdamSchefter
Seahawks are trading CB Tramaine Brock to Minnesota for a conditional 7th-round pick, as @ZobelSports said. Seahawks wheeling.

  16. All of the cuts around the league are information overload.
    .
John Lynch has his work cut out for him.
    .
Hope he can find a diamond in the rough.

    1. Sebbie… Since Lynch is clueless, could you whip up a 10 point plan for navigating the next few days? Having fun doesn’t count. And please, no cliches like Walsh hats.

      1. 1. Well, first of all, I hope he is well prepared.
        .
        2. The Niners should have identified all the probable cuts for every team, and scouted each player to see if he is a good fit for their scheme. Every team will have to waive 37 players, so the pool of talent is very large.
        .
        3. The Niners have 22 people in the scouting and personnel department, so each one of those persons should have been studying around 50 players each.
        .
        4. While conceding it is improbable, I still think that by bundling players, the Niners may facilitate a deal. It is inherently advantageous for a team to get multiple players for a single pick, especially if those players fill many of that team’s needs.
        .
        5. Hope Lynch has floated some trial balloons with other teams to gauge their interest.
        .
        6. The best deals will be ones where both sides profit. Maybe another deal with the Bears, since they are happy with the Trubisky trade.
        .
        7. Niners should strategize to create 3 spaces on the roster, but instead of just waiving players, they should try to get something for a player. Even a 6th or 7th round pick would help in the draft next season. It may be too late, but they should emulate the Seahawks.
        .
        8. By dealing away a player, the Niners can direct where the player goes, so that player does not go to a division rival.
        .
        9. Lynch should try to help Buffalo, Miami or the Jets, because that would hurt the Patriots. Of course, the Jets are being content to tank this season, and are not even trying to win.
        .
        10. Niners should poach a DB from the Seahawks or Cards, an O lineman from the Cowboys, and a player from the Patriots. In order to get that SB mojo, they need to get it from the Patriots, which may also weaken the Pats.

        1. No cliches’ huh…

          — Trial balloons sent aloft with interest gauges attached,
          — Patriots personnel assistance embargo seems to be a new running narrative,
–“Poaching” specific positions from specific teams– poaching is illegal, Seb- stop saying this, you already have enough trouble with the threats on POTUS,
–“Best deals are where both sides profit” unless it’s the Pats…

          — And of course, the hope JL of being well prepared, as long as he keeps checking in here…

          1. Seb, all teams don’t waive 37 players. Many veterans are flat out released and not subject to waivers.

              1. Yes, but the 49ers have an advantage when it comes to claiming players off waivers, not FA’s. I just wanted to make that point. It’s not like every team has 37 players who are subject to waivers. That would be even more insane.

And I’ll say it right now, I’ll be disappointed if they don’t claim at least a couple players with the #2 claim. They are clearly going with youth, so they need to look for a couple young upgrades.

        1. Sebbie is the surly cat, fascinated by the laser pointer dot on the wall. Move it around and he chases it–it’s funny, sad, and annoying…it’s Sebbie!

          1. Cassie, you should think before you post. However, like Baalke, you go all emo, and are your own worst enemy. Quit shooting yourself in the foot.

            1. Poor seb doesn’t realize what emo means and how it relates to him! Need a binky? You seem to react to every little post about you. Bless your heart!

              1. East, I will respond, because by ignoring the trolls, it just seems to encourage them.
                .
Sounds like you are going emo, too. Too bad you cannot present a cogent thought, but go with the insults since that is what you think makes you look smart. Too bad that it just says more about you than it does about me.

          2. Cassie….

It’s mostly funny!! We all owe Sebs a debt of gratitude for some top-notch entertainment!

(Until he starts his rants about hate-mongering and victim-hood…………..that does get tiresome).

            1. In fact, Cassie, I just made up this little dittie–for Seb-skov–and challenge you to better this effort…….(I just made it up)….

The sun’s o’ercast with blood: fair day, adieu!
Which is the side that I must go withal?
              I am with both: each army has a hand;
And in their rage, I having hold of both,
They swirl me asunder and dismember me.

I believe that accurately sums up Sebbie’s position…………..

    1. I think that’s a blessing in disguise. I’ll go out on a limb and say I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s a starter next year.

  17. From the chatter over this offseason I’d assume Smelter would have been in the first wave of cuts. I wonder if Lynch sees him as cut but possible PS candidate?

    1. Good observation. Another guy still standing is Bell. Yesterday Grant said he thought Shanahan has disliked him from the get go. We’ll see.

      1. Despite the rule changes, it seems like tea!s are still splitting cuts in two groupings. Only change is the cut groups are spaced a day appart instead of a week appart.

      1. I’m calling dibs on the “Kerley-to-Pats” prognostication….due in part to my utter and un-substantiated guess about BB and Chip’s friendship. Chip would talk Kerley up, he was pretty good for what passed for Chip’s offense last season…

        1. I certainly hope you are wrong, because no one, I repeat, NO ONE, should be helping the Pats in any way.
          .
They are the odds on favorites, so why hand them a ring?

  18. I gotta laugh. KS can be blunt at times. ‘ We have seen all we need to see of Barkley. He may have thrown for 5 TDs, and it would not have changed our assessment.”
    .
    He is brutally honest.

    1. “Every time I watch guys, I’m trying to rank them,” Shanahan said. “But that is always changing. You watch the one guy one day and then you see another guy and you go back to the first guy to make sure you had it right and weren’t tired that day and got it wrong. You keep going back and forth and stacking them.”

The whole “ranking” exercise is old hat for the 37-year-old Shanahan. He’s been doing it since he was a teenager when his father, Mike, coached the Denver Broncos.

“Usually it was track season around then,” said Kyle. “And when track was finished every day, I remember from my sophomore year in high school, I’d go to the team headquarters and sit back and listen to meetings. They’d always have their tapes on guys and I’d grab tapes and go to my dad’s office, once the meetings got a little boring, and watch the video on my own. I was always trying to figure out tricks on how I could play. So it wasn’t always scouting and coaching. But I was training myself to scout and coach and I didn’t realize it.”

The hardest part in evaluating a college quarterback, Shanahan has learned, is getting a feel for his mental toughness and dedication. At the scouting combine in Indianapolis in early March, teams can interview prospects in 15-minute sessions that turn into sort of player-evaluation speed dating. There’s no one single important question to ask those quarterbacks, Shanahan said. The idea is to get a feel for as much of the player’s personality as possible.

“You never want to have to teach a guy to be a leader,” Shanahan said. “You want a guy who is himself. I usually feel the best type of quarterbacks are, everybody in the building knows it’s as important to him as anyone else . . . They’re giving it their best every single day. They can handle adversity, because you are going to go through that in this business. You want a strong guy who takes it on his shoulders and isn’t going to point a finger.”

Like you said, brutally honest. Said about the quarterback he kept but in regards to the one he didn’t back in March!

      1. KS just said he did not mind anyone protesting, and supports Eric Reid.
        .
Guess he does not mind Kaep protesting, either.
        .
Fortunately, KS is versatile, and can dial up some Read Option plays, just like in last night’s game.
        .
Kaep can do those controlled rollouts and bootlegs in his sleep, and has shown good skills to be able to throw accurately while on the run.
        .
Hmm, now that Barkley was cut, Number 7 is available…….

        1. Stop bringing him up.
KS has no problem with his protest, just thought Hoyer and Barkley were better able to run his complex offense.
That should tell you everything you need to know.

              1. That stench of poor mechanics, bouncing balls off LB’s helmets, one dimensional QB play is all a thing of the past.
                You lost!

          1. Guess you are yelling at East Coast. He is the one who brought him up.
            .
Yes, he originally thought Barkley could run his system, but had to admit he was wrong when he cut him.
            .
Maybe he will be wrong, again, when Hoyer faces fierce pass rushers the first 4 games, and an immobile QB gets bludgeoned.
            .
Guess you are yelling at Grant, too. In his pregame periscope, he said that Kaep will play again, because teams and fans who did not want him, will be clamoring for Kaep once attrition sets in, and/or the team starts losing. Head coaches will be desperate to stop 4 game losing streaks, and will consider Kaep to be their best chance to win. Jags are the first team who may be confronted with that reality. With a porous O line, Denver’s QBs may face adversity. Both Savage and Watson may falter. Jets may start 0-4.
            .
Another scenario may unfold. Kaep, even without throwing a pass for months, may lead a team and do well, winning games. Then the Niners will look foolish to have blackballed Kaep, especially if they start struggling.
            .
I am just wondering if KS is flexible and can make adjustments. I also wonder if he truly wants to do everything in his power to win.
            .
Jed has already shown me that he wants to be rewarded with a high draft position, and does not mind losing, because it is a good thing.

            1. Ha! That’s a laugh! You spent months saying Barkley would unseat Hoyer. You are a real treat!

              1. I said I expected he might, because of Hoyer’s lone playoff loss, but once TC started and Barkley kept throwing picks, I changed my mind.

          1. BT, like a moth to a flame. Thought you learned your lesson.
            .
Personally, I just want to discuss the 53 cuts, but you all seem determined to troll in the gutter.
            .
            So be it.

    1. #80, what’s going on. You and I always used to agree, but I have to dissagree here. lol

FS is the most important position on the backend of this style defense. Wouldn’t you want your best DB playing there? Not to mention, CB’s of larger than average size are also prefered for this scheme, because they need length and physicality, and Ward is an average size CB at best, at 5’11”, 194 lbs.

      1. Besides, Ward has primarily played the nickel corner position, up until he played some on the outside last season. And K’Waun Williams appears to be a very good nickle back. So if Ward goes to CB, he’ll be sort of out of position, IMO.

        1. Hopefully we’ll pick up a CB with tons of potential on the waiver wire. But even if we don’t, I’m playing my best DB at his natural position, FS (he played FS, but not single high) in College, and was drafted with the idea of playing Safety at some point.

      2. Give it a day or two. We’ll probably be back on the same page after the cuts.
        :-)

Most importantly, I think Jerome can handle the position. He has good range, can cover, can tackle, and he is a ballhawk.

Ward may not be ready for Week 1. If not, who knows how long he will be out. He was supposed to be back a couple of weeks ago and he is injury prone. If Ward can play, he will have still missed a lot of time. IMO, we know Jerome can play single high, we still don’t know if Ward can.

As you mentioned, while maybe not an ideal situation, Ward can play nickel CB or outside CB. He could also play the Tartt hybrid role.

        1. I agree with some of what your saying #80. However, Ward has spent the entire off season planning and studying to play FS, not CB in this system. So your going to basically ask your best DB to put everything he worked on this off season aside, and learn a new position in this scheme with 1 week to prepare?

I agree, if he’s not ready to play, don’t play him. But he’s been in all the meetings, OTA’s, etc, so it’s not like he doesn’t understand his basic assignment. The diifference between Ward and Jerome is that Ward is both instinctive and fast, and Jerome is just instinctive. Ward was a lockdown NFL Slot Corner for a while, while Jerome hasn’t played a single NFL down. If FS wasn’t the most important position on the back end, I’d be more open to moving him. But he’s clearly the best DB on the roster, but really not ideally sized to play CB, so I’d keep him at FS when he’s ready to go. Who’s left at FS if you move Ward? Tartt & 2 rookies, for the most important position in the backfield? I think there’s a decent chance they’d start Tartt over Jerome at this point anyhow.

          1. I think we have a difference of opinion on Jerome. He may not have a great 40 time, but he can cover the entire field. That indicates to me that he takes good angles, which will also help him against the run.

Jerome has never played an NFL down, but Ward has never played single high at this level. Ward’s lack of size could be an issue at FS too since he will have to tackle more.

            1. Adrian Colbert may be a dark horse candidate, but I am wondering if they may move Ward to CB, and install Dontae Johnson at safety.
              .
Tartt also may in the mix, since he played FS in that third preseason game, but he took bad angles last season.

  20. I agree with you 49.
It’s the most important position on the defense as it’s the most vulnerable area within the scheme.
Seattle has great corners but without Earl they were giving up big shots down the middle of the field.
To put the positions importance into perspective… Seattle was 5th in DVOA pass defense through Week 11 but they Ranked 26th in Weeks 12-16 when ET was out.
No cornerback will make that kind of difference.

    1. I get the importance of the position. That’s why I prefer Jerome. He proved he could play the position against 1st stringers. I’m not confident that Ward can play FS.

      http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/49ers-minicamp-report-no-one-can-cover-marquise-goodwin/

      3. FS Jimmie Ward. “The 49ers free safety and last line of defense bit on a run fake and couldn’t recover in time to stop Goodwin from making a long touchdown catch. Ward still hasn’t broken up a single pass in front of the media this offseason. The former cornerback seems uncomfortable at his new position.”

Ward was struggling pre hammy and he’s missed a ton of time. I think starting Ward is the riskier move.

    2. Since the Seahawks just acquired a DB, I am hoping Tedric Thompson may be released.
      ,
Marcus Cromartie, a former Niner, may also be released.

        1. Prime, the Seahawks used that 4th round pick of the Niners to acquire Tedric Thompson. There is no certainty that they will cut him.
          .
However, I will agree that my grass is very green.

  21. Since the 49ers have 2nd waiver wire dibs, I wonder how many players they will pick up… and which 49ers that would have made the 53 will be displaced.

#49ers need to move 18 players off roster by 1 p.m.
I’m hearing DT Quinton Dial is among them.
    10:21 AM – Sep 2, 2017

What’s the over-under on him ending on the Patriots? Belichick loves guys like this. And he’s taken more than one cast-off, including Anthony Pleasant from the 49ers, and got solid production out of him.

    1. Good God, man, could Baalke’s players be this bad and he’s been hiding them from Jed on the roster this long.

      1. Dude, Dial was a 5th rounder with a 20% chance of becoming a starter. Like any player drafted that late.

The fact is he was very solid pick who not only made it four years, but was a good player as a strong-side 3-4 DE. He just doesn’t fit this kind of defense. One that needs sprinters not cloggers and he’s a clogger.

        1. Moses,

getting tired of your act, man. Man up, last checked, Baalke had 8 players left on offense on this roster, and his defensive players are going.

Meanwhile, Shanahan gets a late start and finds Matt Breida, Bolden, Hikutini, and what about 6th rounder, DJ Jones, who outplayed 5th rounder Dial and gets his roster spot.

Baalke was a loser…..By the way Moses. As an ex NFL scout, I ran into Minnesota scouts in down town Salt Lake City. One of these scouts’ brother had to pass for 600 yards/game at their local Jr. College because the defense was so bad…..The coach of that Jr. College Defense—–Trent Baalke……These scouts all wondered how this loser was ever hired by Jed….?

          1. My act? Jesus Christ, you don’t seem to have a clue how the cap works or how rare it is for a 5th rounder to become a starter in the NFL or how short their careers are. Instead of saying ‘hey, we won on that pick’ you **** on a good pick who was a solid starter and was #63 in D-Line compensation.

You’re, literally, as ****ing stupid with your ignorant Baalke Did Every Thing Wrong (even when it was a good pick) Obsession as Seby is with his cliche’s and Kaepernick obsession.

The San Francisco 49ers kicked off their second day of roster cuts with 17 players to move off of their roster in order to reach the 53-man requirement by Saturday’s 1 p.m. PT deadline. The first reported player is defensive lineman Quinton Dial, according to NBC Sports Bay Area and Bay Area News Group.

Thanks, again Trent Baalke, 21 mil guarantted to Torey Smith who we never threw to; the V-Mac extension, and now Dial’s 16.5 mil extension. You A-Hole.
    Cam Inman ✔ @CamInman
#49ers need to move 18 players off roster by 1 p.m.

In February of 2016, Dial signed a three-year extension with the 49ers that maxes out at $16.5 million over the contract and guaranteed him $5.3 million. He had been scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2017.

    1. Jed, this money could have helped in Shanahan’s rebuild. Why you kept him on last winter to sign all of those extensions is beyond me.

No wonder mommy slapped you down for throwing 16 mil. out the window here, another 7 mil there,
then the 21 mil guaranteed to Torey Smith.

Peace and Love Mrs. Debartolo, keep an eye on Jed….thank you.

    1. Moses,

Are you a Ram fan ? Between Seb’s lack of talent evaluation and your’s, as an ex employee in the industry I can’t wait for Sunday to see how many more of Baalke’s players are left….I’m sure you’ll have an excuse for that one.

  25. I have to agree. Always thought DJ would make the team. Wonder if this means this opens door for Pita?

      1. No, you worship at the alter of Trent Baalke and just finished your love fest dissertation on Dial–that’s who you wanted on the roster Mr. Short Term Memory Loss…..

        1. The “In Balke We Trust” bullshit was as tedious as King Solomon has become. FFS, people, get a life

    1. Yeah, EastCoast9er,

At the end of the day, we’re a 2-14 team and the ship captain was Trent Baalke, something that escapes Moses or Seb

      1. lol. Some says something nice about a Baalke pick and you go nuts when called on your complete BS. Man, you really a piece of work. What’s next? I eat kittens? I’m Al Davis’ love-child? I mean, how stupid can you get?

        1. Maybe you and Seb can form your own website called ‘Worship Trent and Kap’. Just leave us to post about 49er’s new direction while you two discuss your loser talent….2-14—-you are a liar and a loser, Sir.

        2. Moses, I may disagree with a lot of your positions, but you are a genius compared to TrollD.
          .
At least you present strong arguments and deal with facts. With the rest of the peanut gallery, I feel like I am in a battle of wits with unarmed foes.

  26. We knew this time would come, when after fiercely spirited competition we’d begin to see which “playahs” were moving ahead of the others in the lead to be blog clowns.
    Jeez

  27. Too bad to see Dial go for nothing as I thought he was pretty solid in the past, but it is good that the younger guys unseated him- was hoping for an upset n Seattle, but the Richardson trade was pretty deflating- hipe they end up w a myriad of $ issues……

  28. MM:

9:10 a.m. — The 49ers have informed defensive lineman Chris Jones that he is being released, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Not surprised. He wasn’t that great for the Chiefs.

Also, TJ Ward (3X pro bowler) was released by the Broncos.

Also, MM added this to the Dial cut:

The 49ers appear focused on adding a defensive lineman who has been cut from another team, the source said. Dial is considered a better fit for a 3-4 scheme. The 49ers switched to a 4-3 this season. Dial entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick of the 49ers in 2013.

So I’m thinking Blair is going to be cut as well as he’s too long for Dick and too short for Richard.

    1. My 53 had Chris Jones cut, because I thought that hustle was good, but not enough.
      .
Hope this means that Blair makes the team.

  29. Don’t let the door hit ya Chris Jones—-another B-A-A-L-K-E player gets released as we’re posting now.

I would say it’s amazaing, but Baalke created this 2-14 messs, so his players are paying the price.

    1. You know Lynch was the one that signed him this past March, right? Sure, he came in last year as an emergency injury replacement after the Dolphins cut him thanks to all the d-line injuries. But he was in this training camp because Lynch and Shanahan liked him enough to give him a shot.

Really, for someone who accuses others of being fans of other teams, you’re routinely wrong about what goes on with the 49ers….

  30. Should of trade him for something ,any body else . Draft picks build a team , through draft . Does that stink .

  31. We should try to back end the draft , ( does anyone know how many draft picks we have total for this year coming up

  32. Andy Lee is available…..am tired of seeing Pinion punt would it be crazy to invite Andy back? He’s 35.

    1. Post Game Punt Question:

Reporter: “Jim Tomsula, why did you punt, down 7 with 3:12 left in the game from the 35 ?
Tomsula: “You can’t be afraid to punt.”

  33. Re. trades: The mass layoff is probably affecting the trade value of any extraneous players in a bad way (for their current teams). At this point in the preseason, it’s pretty clear who’s going to be let go. The only motivation to trade is if your divisional rival is more likely to take or attract a player you want.

Re. Dial and Jones (and a bunch of the players released yesterday): It’s fair to say there’s a youth movement going on with the team. Most if not all the rookie draft picks will make the 53, and a fair number of UDFAs as well. Definite rebuilding for the next couple of years.

  34. With the release of Dial and Jones, there is no longer a back-up for Buckner on the roster unless they’re going to try Blair. Gives credence to what Maiocco said about the 49ers looking for a back-up d-lineman from the waiver wire.

  35. Surprised both Dial & Chris Jones were released. Well imagine this means there is an expected or already released 3 tech the 49ers are waiting to pounce upon.
TJ Ward being released in Denver may spell doom for a 49er backup Safety although its hard to imagine a massive rebuild dumping significant salaries with large dead cap will take on an aged vet on the downward slide which was Hightower.

  36. Offensive tackle and NFL Players Association president Eric Winston is being released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday, a source told ESPN’s Josina Anderson.

He was a good OT at one time. NOt great. But probably better than either one of our current back-ups.

  37. Never a doubt DJ Jones was on the roster. FYI, ShanaLynch are extremely excited about this kids potential. Low center of gravity, strong, nimble, hard worker, perfect future NT.

    1. I have low expectations (though high hopes) for those low round guys. I was really pulling for him. He looks like he could be a solid developmental project if given time and he has ‘football character.’

      1. D.J. Jones is also affable and good in front of a camera. Learned his craft at Last Chance U.

    2. DJ Jones was my lone hit in my last mock before the draft. Glad he seems to have made the team.

    3. The thing is, while DJ Jones isn’t as versatile as Dial, I think he’s already every bit as capable at both dropping anchor and pushing the pocket, as Dial is at NT. And Jones has a much higher ceiling in this scheme. Dial will be signed by a team that deploys a 3-4, where he’s much better suited to play DT. Dial’s just too tall to play NT in this league.

      1. Scratch that. Dial is too tall to become a dominate NT in the NFL. He can play over the center, but he’ll never be better than average at that position, IMO.

#49ers have tough calls at OL w/rookies JP Flynn & Erik Magnuson. Either/both could get claimed. If not, could earn more than PS minimum $.

I’ve read about Magnuson quite a bit. Flynn… Really haven’t read much about him at all.

    1. I think Flynn will make it because he played center all last game. Magnussen is more of a tackle or guard.

      1. Guess I was wrong. Flynn was waived, and I think I saw Magnussen playing center in the third game.

In what we do offensively, we can’t have non-athletic linemen,” offensive line coach Alan Arrington said. “We got to have guys who move their feet. I think now, after 13 practices, there’s no question he’s the guy who will be at left tackle. There’s nobody even close.

  41. Matt M:

The 49ers on Friday settled all their competitions in the offensive backfield.

C.J. Beathard won the job to serve as Brian Hoyer’s backup after beating out Matt Barkley, who was released. Beathard completed 26 of 45 pass attempts for 401 yards with four touchdowns, one interception and a passer rating of 107.7. He rushed for 85 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Also, the 49ers cut veteran running backs Tim Hightower and Kapri Bibbs, leaving the team with four running backs.

The 49ers are expected to keep the four remaining running backs on their regular-season roster: Carlos Hyde, Raheem Mostert, Matt Breida and Joe Williams.

Williams, a fourth-round draft pick, entered camp as the player most likely to insert himself as Hyde’s backup. But although Williams led the 49ers in rushing with 130 yards on 25 carries, he might be at the bottom of the depth chart.

Williams struggled to catch the ball. He also fumbled several times in training camp, and lost a fumble Thursday night in the exhibition finale before leaving the game with a left ankle sprain.

  42. There were some David Fales fans a few drafts ago on this blog. Released by Dolphins today.

  43. Such a difficult day for the coaches and players. So the guys are doing what? Hanging in the weight room hoping not to be called?

    1. Little surprised with the Kaaya cut. I thought that he would be around for us in the 4th – 5th rd.
Shanahan liked CJB for a reason. One being that he can throw while under pressure. I’m still skeptical about Hoyer completing an entire season or how he reacts in the pocket after taking a few hit’s.
I have a sense that CJ may be our starting QB by years end. Definitely not wishing anything bad for Hoyer, but sometimes good things come from a misfortunate incident. The Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady move comes to mind.

        1. Kaaya holds many records at Miami, but evidently he could translate his talent to the big leagues.
I guess he adds a new meaning to “bye Felisha.”

Yes, but does it mean he’s sticking?

    1. Hard to say. He’s such a liability on offense. On Bolden’s fly sweep in the San Diego game, he was totally incompetent blocking a safety, or else the play could have gone for big yardage, instead of a loss.

Baalke traded him to the Redskins two years ago. Got a 5th rounder for him. Lynch took that 5th rounder and traded it to the Colts as part of a package (4th (compensatory) & 5th) to move up and get Joe Williams.

Hat tip to defensive minded Mizzou coach Barry Odom. It’s not easy to hold that Missouri State offensive juggernaut to under 40 in a half.

  48. Raheem Mostert’s agent tweets congratulations that “all indications” he’s making the team. I’ve jumped the gun on this before and the player eventually got cut, but its looking good for him.

    1. Yeah, I saw that. Maiocco says all four RBs left (Hyde, Breida, Mostert & Williams) are “expected” to make the team.

Congrats to my San Francisco 49ers client RB/KR Raheem Mostert… All indications are that he made their roster despite a crowded backfield.

  50. This is another reminded that most athletes don’t recover from ACL surgery.–great quote Grant:). Maybe you should pass this along to NFL executive Trent Baalke–what a joke that guy was. Wasn’t Dial the last part of the failed Alex Smith trade that I believe now netted us with nothing.

      1. you sure that hyde was involved in a trade deal with somebody in the recent past?
—his agent will be surprised. 2nd round pick from Ohio St. by the 9ers, 2014 draft, do try to keep up….

              1. Sad your attempts at trolling. Keep trying though. You aren’t very original or impressive.

  51. Random thoughts waiting for 1pm cut down…

    – Some players will make the final cut, but get bumped shortly after if the teams does a waiver wire claim (or veteran salary doh-see-doh) to avoid roster payments. I’m not expecting the final 53 to be the final 53.

    – More player for player trades (sometimes with picks) this year. Becoming a trend? Two successful teams like Pats and SeaRoids are doing it. Expect the rest of the NFL to copy.

  52. Joe Williams stashed on IR for ankle injury. Look like Hyde, Breida, Mostert to start to season.

    1. I was thinking there was a (very) small chance the 49ers would try to stash Williams on PS, risking losing him during waivers. This is better. He’s ball security is so bad I don’t want him on the field until his technique improves.

    2. Well… So much for ‘The Next Great Running Back…’ Can’t catch. Can’t block. Fumbles a lot. Now an ankle injury and IR hampering his further development for a significant portion, if not all, of the season.

If this were Hyde’s training camp, Grant would be writing “The Running Back Deficiencies of Carlos (middle name) Hyde.” Kind of like this blast from the past: http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/judging-kaepernick-walshs-qb-standards/

    3. joke’s on your Grant. you act like you know it all, but you are so wrong on your calls. You were so in love with Joe that you coronated him to be the lead back for us in 2017. Kyle says “”If you can’t hold onto the ball, it’s very tough to play in this league”. Sorry for the kid, but Grant needs to stop dealing in absolutes. Grant – here is my advice to you – “Have patience and look for development in a player – not just pure talent”.

On another note, has the Pats/Colts trade been mentioned? Brisset looked pretty good in P4 and Brady gets another ow

    1. I’m sure they’d have loved to trade him to New England, but Indy offered them a deal they couldn’t refuse.

  54. If the 49ers plan to cut or trade Lynch, they should claim LaTroy Lewis from the Raiders as a backup Leo option. He looked really good in preseason and outplayed Calhoun who is likely being kept due to where he was drafted. That’s somebody I missed on. I thought he’d be a lot better than he’s shown so far.

DL Ronald Blair will make it through #49ers initial cut to 53-players, a source said. Sunday, he will go on IR-designated to return (thumb).

  56. Bummer about Williams, was looking forward to watching him this year.

Now for the conspiracy theorists. Was this there way of stashing a player they didn’t feel was ready but didn’t want to risk trying to cut for the p/s?

    1. Yeah, would’ve been exciting every time he carried the ball. Will his knee touch the turf first, or the ball?

      1. I know this is gonna stir up the s**t here, and even some “parroting of you-know-who” accusations, but since we’ve seen Kerley sent off, which caught most people here offguard…even this is a possibility:
        — for those still hoping for a “bundle” trade…moving Hyde for an RB that fits this scheme better (but still has the size/wt. to be a grinder) along with an….OG? DL backup 4 Buckner? Hyde has not shown well with the #1’s in 1st 3 preseason games in run plays.
Might be possible to get 2 decent players for him…

      1. He’s got speed but Hyde is better in every other measure. Williams is very talented but has a lot of developing to do to get the rest of his game up to pro standards. Problem is he can’t practice with an IR designation.

    2. Maybe they didn’t want to use up a “designated to return” IR spot, so they put him on “season ending.” Bodes well for a Garnett return this year?

    3. IR abuse is a long tradition in the NFL. Walsh stashed Sapolu on IR for two years. Koy Detmer faked an injury so the EAgles could put him on IR. There are tons of other cases.

  57. First surprise cut. Victor Bolden is the reason for Kerley’s release. Wish they could have gotten something for him though.

    1. Actually, Robinson and Taylor are. It may help Bolden make the team, but he was a minor factor in the decision tree.

      1. Nope. Those two were going to make it regardless. Kerley was cut because they don’t want to lose one of the younger receivers and my guess is that is Bolden.

  58. Nice. The Niners are creating room to obtain players cut or waived from other teams.
    .
Both Bolden and Trent Taylor did well on punts, so Kerley must have been expendable.

Report: 49ers to place RB Joe Williams on injured reserve

    SANTA CLARA
Running back Joe Williams aggravated an ankle injury in the 49ers’ preseason finale and will be placed on injured reserve.

According to the NFL Network, Williams will go on injured reserve as part of the team’s initial effort to get down to 53 players. That means Williams, a fourth-round pick the team targeted in the draft, will not play in 2017.

Williams’ injury dates back to his time at the University of Utah. A decision was made Saturday to have the rookie concentrate on his rehabilitation this year so that he’s completely healthy for 2018.

  66. Yes, the Matts are getting crumbs and inside info, but I expected that the Niner Blog homers would get the scoop. However, once 1:00 PM rolls around, their info will be dated.
    .
This is getting to be exciting, with many bombshells dropped with the other teams. Looks like the Pats are masterfully maneuvering. BB = BW.

        1. Honesty is the best policy, but no need to advertise it. Keep it hidden away somewhere out of sight. Out of mind?

          1. Yes, BB only achieved his success because he was standing upon the shoulders of a legend. He has emulated BW in every way.

The #Vikings have released starting guard Alex Boone, sources tell @RapSheet and me.

Yeah, I thought way over-paid him. He one good year and, frankly, was a better fit at RT than OG where he struggled with pad height being 6′ 8″ tall.

      1. I honestly liked him at OT. I thought the 49ers should have moved the dumb*** inside and put Boone at RT. But at 6′ 8″… That’s some serious struggle and once he had start dealing with pass-rushing DTs that were much quicker and would get up under his pads… You could he him struggle.

      1. Nice, I think you have it right. The only change could be keeping 3 TEs and going with Burbridge or Bourne. Bourne is my final dark horse.

  68. If Nick Mullens makes it to the practice squad (loved the old term ‘taxi squad’), the 9ers should give him #7…

    1. Swap Mullens for Heinekin on the practice squad, because he would be good to practice against for when they go against Russell Wilson.

        1. Yeah. Thing is, we had so much room it didn’t really matter. And I like the fact that after making a mistake, they were ruthless in correcting it.

          1. Moses, I wouldn’t put signing/releasing Kerley and Jones in the “mistake” category. They were smart moves at the time.

    1. TomD, I don’t see this as a rebuke to Baalke at all. Everyone knows that Baalke was a poor judge of personnel. However, his trading for Kerley last year was one of his best moves, although I doubt he realized how good Kerley actually was. Kerley is an outstanding slot receiver. He gets open and catches about everything thrown his way. Bottom line, he is money, and IMO if New England signs him, he’ll step right in after Edelman and they’ll never miss a beat. I’m sorry to lose him, but it’s a good sign about Taylor and allows us to keep Bolden. You might say we just traded Kerley for Taylor and Bolden, which is smart as far as the future is concerned.

  70. Maybe Boone comes back? Just released by MN……Wasn’t his biggest issue with Kap? Maybe he is sick of that MN winter and wants to come back home….possibly why he let Foster Pancake him in the preseason game….he wants out!!! lol we’ll see…

  71. Between Seb’s Kap infatuation with Kap (another Baalke player who got the axe from Shanny) and Moses correcting my posts on Baalke players for the past year ( lets see, above was the 20th Baalke player Moses tried to defend who got cut) Moses and Seb could be cheerleaders for the all Baalke team.

Why don’t you two cupcakes start your own website and let ‘real 49er fans’ root for the new regime–we’re in the present, not the past like you two dimwits.

  72. Browns released Xavier Cooper. I liked him in the draft, and wonder if the Niners will kick the tires on him.

  73. I must admit that I’m intrigued by possibly getting Boone back, but I can’t forget Foster putting Boone on his back. Foster is a beast though.

    1. Like I said up-stream, I’d like him at OT. In the few times he played the position, frequently cold as he became an in-game injury replacement, he was very good. But at guard he’s always had pad-height issues.

    2. TomD’s correct roster predictions (before anyone else)

      1. Erik Magnuson
      2. Matt Breida
      3. Cole Hikutini
      4. Predicted that CJ Beathard would beat out Barkley, Seb predicted that Barkley would beat out Hoyer
      5. Moses made fun of me in the 1st preseason game when I predicted Boldin would make the team….Look who’s laughing at both dimwits now !…Keep trying cupcakes.

      1. lol. I pointed out the odds of him making it, you idiot. Your being right about anything is just a random walk.

      2. TrollD, I have no fear from a tool who advocated a trade of Kaep for Tebow.
        .
That defines you, just like your delusional fantasizing about breaking into gun safes and creating nightmares. You are one sick puppy.

        1. You can run, but you can’t hide from your predictions, Seb’s, and ‘I’m that guy’ who will remind you every chance I get.

          1. Yes, and I will make sure to tell the world you fantasize about breaking into gun safes and creating nightmares.
            .
