49ers @ Saints live blog: Fourth quarter

This is the live blog for the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ Week 10 road game against the Saints. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from my living room.

12:26 The Saints seem to be going for it on fourth-and-inches from their 33.

12:27 Drew Brees sneaks forward to the 35. First down.

12:28 Brees overthrows an open Kenny Stills deep down the middle of the field on the next play.

12:29 Brees throws a short pass to Ingram on third-and-10. Eric Reid tackles him two yards short of the first down. The Saints will punt.

12:31 Perrish Cox returns the punt to the Niners’ 17.

12:38 Parys Haralson sacks Kaepernick on third-and-four from midfield. Carlos Hyde whiffed in blitz pickup. That’s why he doesn’t play more. Roman should not have asked him to pick up a blitz on such a crucial third down. Andy Lee punts the ball into the end zone for a touchback.

1:13 Brees scrambles for 5 yards on first down and hits Graham for 15 yards on second down. The Saints take their final timeout with 20 seconds left.

12:44 Jimmy Graham beats Jimmie Ward for a first down on third-and-9 from the Saints’ 46.

12:46 Wilhoite breaks up a pass intended for Marques Colston on third-and-3 from the Niners’ 34. The Saints take their first timeout. Will they go for it on third down? The field goal would be a 52-yarder.

12:49 They go for it. Brees hits Colston underneath. Culliver and Reid run into each other and Colston runs down to the 49ers’ 10.

12:50 Ingram explodes up the middle for 6 on first-and-goal. Second-and-goal from the 4 after the two-minute warning.

12:53 Ingram gains 2 yards up the middle. Third and goal from the 2.

12:56 Jimmy Graham boxes out Cox in the end zone and Brees hits him for an easy touchdown. 24-21 Saints with 1:52 left.

12:57 Hyde returns the kickoff to the 49ers’ 22. 1:46 left.

12:59 Boldin drops the ball on first down and second down. He has dropped five passes today. Third-and-10. 1:39 left.

1:04 Michael Crabtree drops a first-down pass on third down. Fourth-and-10.

1:05 Kaepernick scrambles right and throws deep back to the left to Crabtree who is wide open. Gain of 50.

1:07 Jim Harbaugh calls timeout No.2 to avoid a delay penalty on third-and-10 from the Saints’ 27.

1:09 Kaepernick scrambles right and throws to Boldin and he drops another one.

1:10 Phil Dawson makes a 45-yard field goal. 24-24 with 44 seconds left.

1:14 Brees hits Cadet over the middle for 13. Brees spikes the ball at the 49ers’ 47 with 5 seconds left.

1:15 Brees throws a Hail Mary to Graham and he catches it in the end zone. But he pushed Cox. Offensive pass interference. Overtime.

    1. I think he’s better than Ellington but they don’t want their best performing corner getting hurt.

  1. Ok, Niners, play like a play off game. we HAVE to win this. Get a score. Don’t get conservative

  2. Kap, at some point, you’re gonna have to make plays late in games like 100 million dollar QB ‘ S do. Now would be a good time.

    1. Gore has now run into his own people at least 4 times today. Points to inadequate blocking,

  3. We need to go no huddle here. Do necessarily mean snap the fooball fast just don’t let them aub

    1. Man they need to give Hyde some carries so Gore is rested for those 3rd down plays. Hyde just missed it.

  4. Hyde missed the block. …….but what about a WR screen when the DB is playing 10 yards off….smh

    1. I thought the same thing, it was 3rd and 4 and the DBs are so far off the ball. Should’ve been an easy first down.

    1. Forget all day, I’ll just take some points in the fourth quarter for the first time all season. Pathetic

  5. No points on the 2nd half. How do you expect to win when you score no points on the 2nd half? It is not as if the Saints defense was overwhelming the Niners.

  6. give them the td then let kap and roman put together a winning 4th quarter drive. oh wait that doesnt happen in niner land

  7. Our offense is killing our defense. Although there was confusion on that play. We can’t expect our defense to remain on the field and stop them. We have to score points.

  8. Niners just made a HUGE mistake not calling a timeout there. If the saints score- the niners need time on the clock.

Sometimes Harbaugh makes braindead strategic decisions.

      1. No matter what happens- I think this needs to be the last year for this coaching staff. The niners are underacheiving. Roman has too many weapons not to be putting up 30+ pts per game. To have a #2 defense and be close to being out of the playoffs is just ridiculous.

Crabtree, Lloyd, Boldin, Stevie Johnson, Vernon Davis, gore and hyde- and you cant put up more than 21? CRAZY.

  9. Looks like Kaepernick will get the ball with a chance to win it. Lets see if he can engineer his first game winning drive.

  10. why didnt they call the TO? He’s betting on his tired defense to stop them from scoring a TD?

  11. Why is there only one person on Jimmy Graham. Why. It’s a given. Everyone in the UNIVERSE knows this.

  12. This team is struggling on offense because we are getting nothing from a pro bowl tight end. One who hasn’t made a play in 2 months. Vernon Davis should be traded or given away as soon as possible. We’re playing without him anyway.

  13. Kaep HAS to throw the ball to Lloyd or whoever is at the top of the screen man to man. Everyone knows Boldin is getting the ball. PLEASE KAEP

  14. Roman is awful..I was listening to radio and announcer could not understand why on a 3rd and 6 u would send 2 of the 3 wr vertical, leaving keap with one choice. Pass was incomplete of course. No pts in 2nd half again, inexcusable. Fire Roman!

  15. Crab drops an obvious catch…then comes back and catches the prayer. Good thing the Saints forgot about him.

  16. Feels like the beginning of the demise and eventual departure of Harbaugh and Roman. Hope Fangio is given a shot next year to take the reigns. Would hate to see him gone.

  17. This has been one exciting game no matter what happens. And if you lose it’s not on Kaepernick!

    1. It is in part. He’s missed two open receivers; if we settle for a field goal and lose in overtime, there you go.

CRAZY.

  19. Show of hands: Who thinks we win in overtime? I don’t. Ryan made the adjustments. Harbaugh/Roman didn’t. That plus Boldin’s key drops. Just awful to be in this spot.

  20. Roman and the offense was still awful in the second half/OT. A fluke play to Crabtree doesn’t change that. But hey love the win and we’re still alive!
