SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers Week 7 Thursday night game against the Seattle Seahawks. I’ll update this frequently with observations and analysis from the press box.
5:27 The Seahakws won the toss and elected to defer. Very interesting. I think the 49ers would have deferred if they had won the toss.
5:29 Ted Ginn Jr. will handle kickoffs this week. He returns the opening kick to the SF 21 yard line.
5:36 Gore gains 17 yards on three opening-drive carries. He looks terrific. When the 49ers got in Seahawks territory, Greg Roman called a deep pass to Kyle Williams on first down. Alex Smith overthrew it. Then on third and six, Roman called another deep pass to Williams, and Smith overthrew that one, too. Andy Lee punts. Seahawks ball at their 4 yard line.
5:42 The 49ers just called their first timeout of the half. A couple of minutes ago the Seahawks converted a third-and-four. Carlos Rogers couldn’t figure out who to cover before the snap, so Russell Wilson threw the ball quickly to the uncovered Doug Baldwin in the slot, who picked up nine yards and a first down. It’s first and 10 for the Seahawks at their 42 yard line.
5:48 Back-to-back- 49ers penalties moves the Seahawks into Niner territory: Ray McDonald offsides, which negatied a Justin Smith sack, and unsportsmanlike conduct on Dashon Goldson, who yelled something in Marshawn Lynch’s face after a tackle for a one-yard loss.
5:49 Wilson nearly throws an interception to Carlos Rogers on third and five. The Seahawks makes a 52-yard field goal on the next play. 3-0 Seahawks with 5:29 left in the first quarter.
5:50 A few plays before the field goal, Robert Turbin dropped a touchdown pass from Wilson. Turbin ran a wheel route – a staple of the 49ers’ offensive playbook- and he had Patrick Willis beat. The pass spun through Turbin’s hands.
5:52 Michael Crabtree and Randy Moss are the two wide receivers in the 49ers’ offensive huddle to start their second series.
5:55 The 49ers just called their second timeout of the first half. They face third and 10 from their own 20 yard line. They wanted to take a shot downfield on first down, but Randy Moss was covered, so Smith threw the ball away. On second down, Smith sailed a pass over Kyle Williams’ head. Greg Roman should be calling mostly runs on first down while the game is close.
5:58 The 49ers convert with a 12-yard gain on a screen pass to Gore. Brilliant play call.
5:59 Next play, Gore runs up the middle for 18 yards. Roman needs to feed him the ball. He’s killing the Seahawks.
6:03 Greg Roman follows that up with two runs for Kendall Hunter, who gains 6 yards and then 9. Then Roman calls passes and the 49ers’ drive stalls in the red zone. Jason Jones sacks Smith on third and 9 when Smith can’t find a receiver to throw to. David Akers makes a 38-yard field goal to tie the game at three.
6:05 Gore is averaging 7.2 yards per carry and Hunter is averaging 7.5 on just 7 combined carries. Roman needs to feed them the ball more than he did in the first quarter.
