49ers @ Seahawks NFC Championship live blog: First quarter

SEATTLE — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the NFC Championship between the 49ers and Seahawks. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

3:38 The 49ers win the toss and defer.

3:41 Touchback. Dawson kicks it past the end zone.

3:42 First play, Russell Wilson play fakes and rolls left but no one is open. So he holds the ball and Aldon Smith strips him. Vic Fangio already owns Darrell Bevell. 49ers ball at the Seahawks 15. I told you Bevell runs generic shot plays everyone has figured out.

3:44 Frank Gore gains two yards on first down. Colin Kaepernick hits Michael Crabtree for two yards on second down. And Kaepernick runs up the middle on a draw for four yards on third down. Phil Dawson makes the 25-yard field goal attempt. 3-0 49ers.

3:48 Doug Baldwin returns the kickoff to the Seahawks’ 16.

3:50 The Seahawks go three-and-out and the crowd is silent. NaVorro Bowman tackled Marshawn Lynch for no gain on third-and-1.

3:51 LaMichael James makes a fair catch at the 49ers’ 29, but Michael Wilhoite is flagged for holding so the 49ers start at their 19.

3:56 On third-and-3 from the Seahawks 43, Kaepernick runs a draw and gains two yards. The 49ers are going for it on fourth-and-1.

3:58 Actually, they were trying to make the Seahawks jump offside and instead, Vernon Davis commits a false start penalty. Andy Lee punts. Golden Tate lets it bounce. Kassim Osgood downs it at the Seahawks’ 1 yard line.

3:59 Still can’t get over how brutal Bevell’s first play call of the game was. The 49ers had all receivers blanketed plus pressure in Wilson’s face. On top of all that, Bevell had Wilson roll out to his left even though he’s right handed. The ball is not protected when he rolls left. Just brutal. The Seahawks are lucky the 49ers only got a field goal.

4:00 On the other hand, the 49ers’ offense has been ineffective, too. Hard to believe they script their first-15 plays.

4:05 On third-and-7 from the 14, Wilson throws deep to Baldwin, Brooks jumps up and the ball goes through his hands. He jumped too soon. Should have been an interception. But Baldwin caught it. Gain of 22.

4:09 Next play, Whitner hits a defenseless receiver for a 15 yard penalty.

4:10 On third-and-9 from the 49ers’ 48, Bowman blitzes and sacks Wilson for an 11-yard loss and the first quarter ends.
