49ers training camp report: Day 15

SANTA CLARA – Here are the highlights from the 49ers’ first half-speed non-padded practice of training camp, which lasted an hour and 20 minutes. The first-team offense and first-team defense never faced each other during team drills – both units faced scout teams only. Apparently this is how Friday practices will function during the regular season.

THE GOOD

1. OLB Aaron Lynch. Chased down and tag-sacked backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert on a play-action bootleg pass to the offense’s right. Lynch seems in shape for the first time this offseason.

2. S Jaquiski Tartt. Rookie quarterback Dylan Thompson faked a handoff to his left, rolled back to his right and spotted wide receiver Nigel King open downfield – he had beaten dime back Jaquiski Tartt by a couple of steps. Before Thompson threw the pass Tartt started accelerating toward King, and when the ball arrived Tartt swatted it to the ground. This was the best play Tartt made in man coverage this offseason.

3. TE Rory ‘Busta’ Anderson. Beat Tartt for a 10-yard touchdown catch on the last play of practice. This was Anderson’s third catch of the afternoon. I predict he will make the 53-man roster as the fourth tight end.

4. WR DiAndre Campbell. Made six catches today as a member of the scout team. His best catch was his final catch – a 10-yard touchdown in the middle of the end zone against the first-team defense, a play in which he beat starting cornerback Keith Reaser with a quick slant to the inside. Campbell, an undrafted rookie from Oakland, is a big possession receiver who’s having a solid offseason.

5. QB Colin Kaepernick. Completed six of seven pass attempts including a 50-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline to Vernon Davis, who was being covered by cornerback Marcus Cromartie, who stopped running around the 25-yard line.

THE NOT SO GOOD

1. WR Quinton Patton. Ran most routes without ever looking at the quarterback, as if he knew he wasn’t going to get the ball. And he didn’t get the ball. He received no targets during team drills. Offensive coordinator Geep Chryst almost never calls plays in which Patton is the primary target.

  1. Patton is not a good player enough blaming everyone else but Patton for not being any good ! He will be handed a role he isn’t qualified for and wont keep for long if they want anything out of the 3wr spot

  2. Sounds like Anderson is going to be taking Patton’s final roster spot. However, I think giving up on and releasing of Patton would come back to bite us.

    1. Patton will come back and haunt sf just like Jason hill did when they gave up on him
Nobody or nothing is holding Patton back but himself and a lack of talent!

Clear good player against lesser competition at Louisiana tech like troy Edwards years back! That a&m was a fluke

  3. Who has Anderson been making catches against? Isn’t he third string atm, and as recently as a few days ago behind Asante Cleveland on the depth chart? Looking good for the third string is important to get noticed, but he’s third string for a reason.

          1. Grant,
Did you like Colin Kaepernick in the new Madden 16 short film? Were you old enough to watch Scent of a Women starring Al Pacino?

Source confirms 49ers have traded TE Derek Carrier to Washington for a fifth-round draft pick (h/t @mattbarrows).

Another TE gone. Should help Anderson’s chances of making the roster I guess!

  5. Niners trade Derek Carrier to the skins for a 5th rnd pick.. Lol! They got a 5th for a 4-5th string TE… Great trade.

    1. Conditional 5th in 2017, so not a slam dunk, but still a bonus for an eventual cut and loss.

      1. I don’t know how the skins plan to use him but I hope this works out for us. I think this was the wrong TE to trade. I thought he was our second best TE.

        1. He may have been the only TE that other teams had an interest in. Trent would trade his mother if it got him a draft pick.lol.

  6. Tartt recovering ground two steps behind is a plus. There will be times when a WR gets a little separation, even vs good DBs . Closing speed is a great quality to have. Tartt can even sucker a QB into throwing pics.
