49ers v. Broncos preseason live blog: Second quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers’ exhibition game against the Denver Broncos. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

6:41 The 49ers just went five-and-out. Vance McDonald gained 19 yards on a drag route. McCoy threw a pass to Jenkins on a drag route, too, but Jenkins never turned his head to find the ball, which was thrown low. The Broncos start their next offensive drive at their 20.

6:49 The 49ers stop the Broncos’ 10-play drive when Dan Skuta sacks Osweiler on third-and-ten. LaMichael James returns the punt to the 49ers’ 21 yard line, but D.J. Harper gets flagged for holding, so the 49ers start at their 5 yard line. Scott Tolzien is in the game at QB.

6:53 Tolzien completes a short pass to Kassim Osgood on first down. On second down, Tolzien handed the ball off to Harper, who fumbled. Shaun Phillips recovered it an returned it for a TD. 7-3 Broncos. Bad stretch by Harper. First the holding penalty, then the fumble inside his own 20-yard line.

6:57 Cox returns the kick 33 yards to the 49ers’ 40 yard line. Still Tolzien Time.

7:00 On second and 10, Jenkins runs a short hitch route in front of a big cushion. He catches it and immediately fumbles. The Broncos recover at their 45.

7:02 The Broncos go three-and-out. On second and eight, Michael Wilhoite blitzed and sacked Osweiler. Dobbs also was in on the sack. The 49ers start their next offensive drive at their 21, and Jenkins is back in the game.

7:05 Now the 49ers go three-and-out. Dixon went nowhere on first down, Tolzien missed an easy pass to Dixon out of the backfield on second down and Vance McDonald dropped a pass on third down. After the 60-yard punt, the Broncos start at their 27.

7:08 The Broncos go four-and-out. On third and four, Corey Lemonier chased Osweiler out of the pocket and forced him to throw the ball away. The 49ers start their next offensive series at their 18 with 2:40 left in the first half. McCoy’s back in the game.

7:10 Chad Hall just ran in front of Jenkins to catch a pass. I guess Hall wanted it more.

7:17 McCoy throws deep for Jenkins, but Mike Adams, the free safety, cut across the field and picked it off. McCoy overthrew him, but Jenkins never made a play on the ball.

7:19 The Broncos go three-and-out. Perrish Cox broke up a pass on second and 11. There are 31 seconds left in the first half.

7:20 Tolzien completes a five-yard pass to Hall and the 49ers call timeout. Second and five at the 49ers’ 40 yard line with 25 seconds left in the half.

7:22 Tolzien leads the offense 39 yards in four plays, completing four-straight passes. Dawson hooks the 42-yard field goal wide left. No, that wasn’t David Akers. He would have pushed it wide left. Big difference.
