49ers v. Cardinals live blog: First quarter

SAN FRANCISCO —  This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 6 game against the Cardinals. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

1:23 The Cardinals’ lose the toss. The 49ers choose to defer.

1:25 Javier Arenas returns the kickoff to the Cheifs’ 21. Kassim Osgood tackles him.

1:27 The Cardinals go three-and-out. Eric Reid makes a nice tackle on Rashard Mendenhall on second down and Donte Whitner makes a nice tackle on Andre Ellington on third-down. The Cardinals punt and Kyle Williams makes the fair catch at the 49ers’ 19.

1:30 The 49ers’ go three-and-out. The Cardinals blitz up the middle on third down and Anthony Davis gives up a sack around the right side. Kaepernick missed an open Anquan Boldin deep down the middle of the field on first down. Patrick Peterson returns the punt to the Cardinals’ 44.

1:34 On the second play of the drive, Palmer throws a pass right to Eric Reid. Reid returns it to the Cardinals’ 7. That didn’t take long.

1:36 Patrick Peterson knocks away a pass to Boldin on first down, Gore goes nowhere on second down and Yeremiah Bell knocks away a pass to Vernon Davis on third down. Garrett Celek is flagged for holding on the field goal. Dawson now will attempt a 35 yarder. He makes it. 3-0 49ers.

1:40 Michael Wilhoite and Craig Dahl tackle Arenas at the Cardinals’ 12.

1:43 Ellington bounces the first-down run to the right and gains five yards. Glenn Dorsey appears to pull his right hamstring chasing after Ellington. Dorsey slowly limps off the field. Second and five.

1:46 The Cardinals go three-and-out again. Palmer sails a short pass over Larry Fitzgerald’s head on third-and-two. Palmer is dreadful but the Cardinals are running the ball pretty well – 16 yards on four carries. Amazing the Cardinals didn’t run the ball at Tony Jerod-Eddie on third-and-short. After the punt, it is 49ers’ ball at their 32.

1:49 Dorsey has a hamstring injury an is questionable to return.

1:51 The 49ers go three-and-out again. Gore gains one yard on first down, Tyrann Mathieu knocks away a pass for Boldin on second down and Bell knocks away a pass to Vernon Davis on third down. Kaepernick still has not targeted anyone other than Boldin and Davis.

1:52 On the punt return, C.J. Spillman tackles Peterson and the Cardinals’ 10. The Cardinals are flagged for holding on top of that. They start from their 3.

1:54 The Cardinals go three-and-out. Palmer tries to throw a pick to Tarell Brown on second down but Fitzgerald knocks it away, so Palmer throws a pick to Carlos Rogers on third down and he returns it to the Cardinals’ 11.

1:56 Gore gains five yards up the middle on first down. Jim Harbaugh calls timeout on second down to avoid a delay penalty.

1:58 The 49ers go three-and-out. Gore loses two yards on second down and Kaepernick’s pass gets batted down at the line of scrimmage on third down. He was throwing to Baldwin on a slant. Dawson makes the 26-yard field goal. 6-0 49ers with 4:31 left in the first quarter. Palmer has been trying his best to give the game over to the 49ers but the 49ers’ offense won’t take advantage.

2:03 Fitzgerald beats Brock and Whitner on a short slant. The result of the play is a 75-yard touchdown. 7-6 Cardinals. They looked dead in the water until that play.

2:05 Kyle Williams returns the kickoff to the 49ers’ 32.

2:10 The first quarter ends as the 49ers face second-and-1 from the Cardinals’ 22. Kaepernick completed a 26-yard pass to Vernon Davis on play action. Marlon Moore gained 9 yards on an end around.
