49ers v. Falcons live blog: First quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 16 game against the Falcons. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

5:34 The 49ers win the toss and defer.

5:41 Touchback. The Falcons start at their own 20.

5:45 The Falcons gain 10 yards and one first down before punting. LaMichael James returns the punt to the 49ers’ 32. Aldon Smith and Justin Smith got pressure on Matt Ryan on third-and-11 and forced a bad throw to Roddy White.

5:52 Instead of checking down to a wide open Kendall Hunter, Colin Kaepernick tries to scramble and gets sacked by Corey Peters on third-and-2 from the Falcons’ 29. Phil Dawson makes a 49-yard field goal. 3-0 Niners.

6:01 The Falcons gain 16 yards and one first down this time before they punt. James makes a fair catch at the 49ers’ 8. Patrick Willis missed a tackle on Harry Douglas, which gave the Falcons their one first down on that drive.

6:12 Kaepernick completes a 17-yard pass to Osgood over the middle on second-and-18, and the first quarter ends. The 49ers face third-and-1 at the Falcons’ 47 when the second quarter begins.
