49ers v. Panthers live blog: First quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 10 game against the Panthers. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

1:03 The Panthers win the toss and defer. The 49ers will receive first.

1:05 Anthony Dixon is the kick returner and he takes a knee in the end zone. Mario Manningham is the starting split end.

1:09 On second and 10 from the 49ers’ 42 they take timeout to avoid a Delay penalty. They almost committed a Delay on the first play of the game. The 49ers have had two good plays so far – a pass in the flat to Bruce Miller and an 11-yard run by Frank Gore. After that play, Kaepernick forced a pass deep down the middle of the field to Anquan Boldin and Captain Munnerlyn jumped in front of the pass and dropped the interception.

1:13 Gore breaks another big run, this time for 17 yards, but on third and two he loses two yards. Phil Dawson makes the 53-yard field goal and it’s 3-0 Niners.

1:19 The Panthers go three-and-out. Ahmad Brooks sacks Cam Newton on third-and-9. Dan Skuta hit Newton on first down. Aldon Smith did not play on that series. The Panthers punt to LaMichael James and he’s tackled at the 49ers’ 26.

1:21 Jon Baldwin and LaMichael James are in the huddle on first down.

1:23 The 49ers go three-and-out. James loses a yard on first down, Kaepernick hits Manningham for 10 yards on second down and Gore loses a yard on third-and-1. Ginn returns the punt to the Panthers’ 27.

1:32 Newton throws it away on third-and-10 from midfield and the Panthers punt. 49ers’ ball at their 24 after a 26-yard punt.

1:33 Garrett Celek has a hamstring injury and is out for the rest of the game.

1:37 The 49ers go three-and-out again. The Panthers block the punt but they touch it and Eric Reid recovers it. 49ers’ ball at the Panthers’ 41.

1:39 Kaepernick checks down to Gore on first down for a gain of 11 and the first quarter ends.
