49ers v. Panthers live blog: Fourth quarter

SAN FRANCISCO — This is the live blog for the fourth quarter of the 49ers’ Week 10 game against the Panthers. I’ll update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

3:24 Iupati is back on the field.

3:28 Boldin commits a false start penalty on first down and then a pass interference penalty on third-and-15. Kaepernick takes a sack on third-and-25. Lee punts. Ginn returns it 24 yards to the 49ers’ 44. Vance McDonald dropped a well-thrown deep pass on that series. That was his first target of the game. So Roman.

3:34 The Panthers use their first timeout of the second half to avoid another delay. It’s second-and-11 at the 49ers’ 33. Brock gave Smith a big cushion on third-and-7 and Smith caught an 8-yard pass in front of Brock on a comeback route.

3:35 Reid is out with a concussion.

3:38 Brooks sacks Newton for an 8-yard loss, but Gano makes a 53-yard field goal. 10-9 Panthers with 10:05 left.

3:41 Dixon takes the ball out from the back of the end zone and gets tackled at the 49ers’ 12 yard line. Bad decision.

3:43 The 49ers go three-and-out again. Kaepernick over throws an open Boldin on a corner route on third-and-7.

3:44 Lee punts. Panthers’ ball at their 37.

3:50 The Panthers’ drive stalls at midfield and they punt. Former 49er Colin Jones downs it at the 49ers’ 1 yard line with 5:25 left.

3:51 Ray McDonald is out with an ankle injury.

3:55 Kaepernick converts a third-and-10 with a pass to Manningham but he can’t convert a third-and-13. Lee punts. Ginn makes a fair catch at the Panthers’ 32 with 2:27 left.

4:00 It’s the two-minute warning. Tolbert gains 6 yards, fumbles and recovers it.

4:02 The 49ers use their final timeout with 1:54 left. The Panthers face third-and-2 at the 49ers’ 49.

4:02 Newton fumbles the snap but recovers it at the Panthers’ 46. The clock is ticking.

4:04 The Panthers call a timeout with 1:10 left. Now they have to punt.

4:05 The Panthers’ punt it into the end zone. The 49ers have 62 seconds to get a field goal.

4:06 Kaepernick takes a sack on first down and throws a pick on second down and the Panthers will win 10-9. The 49ers lost a close game they should have won, as I predicted. I’m going down to the locker room and will be back at you shortly.
