49ers vs. Cardinals live blog: First quarter

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ irrelevant Week 17 game against the Cardinals. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

1:24 The Cardinals will receive the opening kickoff.

1:25 The ball bounces into the end zone for a touch back. Phil Dawson’s kicks have lost a lot of power this season.

1:31 Offensive coordinator Tom Moore calls a flea flicker on first-and-10 from the Niners’ 20-yard line. Ryan Lindley hands off to Marion Grice who pitches the ball back to Lindley, who throws down the middle to a wide open Michael Floyd for a touchdown. 7-0 Cardinals. Dontae Johnson bit on the flea flicker fake.  Has Greg Roman ever called a flea flicker?

1:34 Trindon Holliday returns the kickoff to the 49ers’ 22.

1:39 The Cardinals lose Anquan Boldin on third-and-8. He catches a ball near midfield and jogs 50 yards for a touchdown. The score is 7-7. Amazing how the whole world knows the pass is going to Boldin on third down and the defense still can’t stop him.

1:42 Ted Ginn returns the kickoff to the Cardinals’ 23.

1:51 Arizona easily drives the ball to the Niners’ 29. Then Dan Skuta tackles Kerwynn Williams for a 7-yard loss on second-and-10. Ryan Lindley throws the ball away on third-and-long, and the Caridinals punt on fourth down. First-and-10 for the Niners at their 10-yard line.

1:58 Frank Gore gains three yards on a strong-side lead run to the right and the first quarter ends. Third-and-2 from the Cardinals’ 42 when the second quarter begins.

No if he did Kaep would have to stare down the receiver so he didn’t lose site of him and would then either bobble the pitch back from the RB or then lose site of the WR once he did takes his eyes off of him by that point he’d try and scramble but instead would run right into a LB for a loss.
