49ers vs. Chiefs live blog: Second quarter

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers’ Week 5 game against the Chiefs. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

2:02 The Chiefs use their first timeout on third-and-five from the 49ers’ 24 yard line. Two plays before the timeout, Smith completed a 16-yard pass over the middle to Junior Hemmingway. That’s the second time Hemmingway has been wide open.

2:05 Smith completes a short pass to Anthony Fasano and Antoine Bethea tackles him for no gain.

2:06 Cairo Santos makes the 42-yard field goal and the score is 10-3 Chiefs.

2:08 Ellington returns the kickoff 22 yards to the 49ers’ 18.

2:10 Kaepernick completes a 39 yard pass deep down the right sideline to a diving Brandon Lloyd on third-and-six.

2:12 The Chiefs blitz, Justin Houston beats Jonathan Martin around the edge and forces Kaepernick to throw the ball away on third-and-8 from the Chiefs’ 37.

2:14 Phil Dawson makes a 55-yard field goal and the score is 10-6 Chiefs. The Chiefs were flagged for an illegal formation on the field goal but Jim Harbaugh declined the penalty.

2:17 Knile Davis returns the kickoff 34 yards to the Chiefs’ 32.

2:19 Dwayne Bowe beats Chris Culliver for an 18-yard catch on third-and-9.

2:20 Bowe drops a deep pass on second-and-1 and Kelce drops a short pass on third-and-1. The Chiefs are going for it on fourth-and-1 from the 49ers’ 40.

2:22 False start. Fourth and 6. The Chiefs will punt.

2:23 Ellington makes a fair catch at the 49ers’ 7 yard line. Should have let that punt bounce.

2:27 Kaepernick scrambles for 7 yards on third-and-6. The Chiefs are challenging. They think Kaepernick ran out of bounds a yard short of the first-down marker.

2:30 The refs confirm the ruling on the field. First and 10 at the 49ers’ 18.

2:35 Second-and-8 at the Chiefs’ 27 after the two-minute warning. Kaepernick has completed three passes in a row for 47 yards.

2:39 The Chiefs are flagged for roughing the passer on first-and-10 from the 49ers’ 18. First and goal at the 9.

2:40 Kaepernick throws a touchdown pass to a wide open Stevie Johnson, who was “covered” by Marcus Cooper. 13-10 Niners. That was a 93-yard drive. 31 seconds left in the half.

2:43 Knile Davis returns the kickoff to the Chiefs’ 23. 22 seconds left.

2:44 Smith hands off to Charles who fumbles and recovers at the Chiefs’ 21. Charles is flagged for using inappropriate language after the play.

2:46 Smith hands off to Charles again and he gains four yards this time. End of the first half.

This article has 35 Comments

  1. Considering Brooks ineffectiveness this season, would not be surprised to see Lynch replace him on passing downs when Aldon comes back

  2. Another bonehead move from Kap. Not snapping the ball before the challenge. He is short.

  3. I’m so confused by our offense. There is no rhyme or reason to the play calls. No play sets up another play.

  4. Stevie Johnson the playmaker. Play calling is much better today. Running outside more.

  5. Do you guys watch the game or just stare at one player, the obsession over every inch CK moves is hilarious! I guess yall don’t watch other games and Qbs either! No one hardly ever gets a snap before a challenge

      1. One Super Bowl? No. Winning one didn’t get 49er fans to stop bashing Steve Young. No, we demand 4 Super Bowl titles from our quarterbacks! And since Kap already lost one, he better win at least 5!

  6. Nice first half.
    The good:
    1. Defense has stepped up after a slow start.
    2. A.Lynch is being used wisely.
    3. The run game is better than average.
    4. CK is going to his 2nd and 3rd WR.
    5. Our WR’s are working very well.
    6. Nice to see a pass to Bruce Miller (underrated hands)
    7. P.Dawson 55 yrd field goal.

    Not so good:
    1. Lack of pressure on A.Smith.
    2. Culliver is a step slow in coverage on Bowe.
    3. O-line needs to give Kaep a little more time in the pocket.
    4. Need to score TD’ rather than FG’ in the redzone.
