49ers vs. Eagles live blog: Second quarter

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers’ Week 4 game against the Eagles. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

2:13 Kaepernick rolls out to his left and throws back against his body to Frank Gore, who is wide open. Fifty-five yard touchdown. What a play. 10-7 Niners.

2:14 Anthony Davis has a knee injury and his return is questionable.

2:15 Polk returns the kickoff to the Eagles’ 15.

2:19 Nick Foles overthrows Jeremy Maclin deep on third-and-10 from the 15 and the Eagles punt.

2:19 Ellington gets tackled right away at the 49ers’ 38.

2:24 On third and 3 Kaepernick throws right to Malcolm Jenkins who intercepts the passs, breaks a bunch of tackles and runs 53 yards for a touchdown. Kaepernick was throwing to Lloyd who was running a quick slant. Kaepernick didn’t see the safety dropping into coverage. Oops. 14-10 Eagles.

2:27 Ellington returns the kick to the 49ers’ 22.

2:31 Kaepernick throws over Boldin’s head on third and 7 and the 49ers go three-and-out. Boldin was open past the stick on the left sideline.

2:31 Darren Sproles returns Andy Lee’s punt 82 yards for a touchdown. Kassim Osgood was flagged for a face mask penalty on the play. 21-10 Eagles. The punt almost was blocked. Too bad for the Niners it wasn’t.

2:33 Eric Reid seems hurt as he walks off the field slowly.

2:35 The Eagles’ special teams have scored two touchdowns in this game.

2:36 49ers down 11 points and the Eagles’ offense hasn’t started to click yet.

2:36 Touchback.

2:38 The 49ers go three and out as Michael Crabtree is flagged for pushing off on third-and-2. The Eagles decline the penalty. Sproles makes a fair catch at Philly’s 21.

2:40 Reid is back in the game.

2:43 Jordan Matthews beats Jimmie Ward for an 8-yard catch on third-and-5. The 49ers drafted Ward instead of Matthews.

2:45 The Eagles are flagged for holding Quinton Dial on the next play and Philly’s drive ends two plays later. Ellington returns the punt to the 49ers’ 32.

2:49 Anquan Boldin makes a flat-out great catch over his shoulder for 23 yards on third-and-5. Kaepernick committs a delay of game penalty next play.

2:54 Frank Gore loses a yard running power on third-and-2 from the Eagles 32.

  1. And Kaep turns right around and throws a pick six. Is this kid ever going to consistently read a coverage accurately?

    1. Kap is lost fellas. The guy can’t read coverages. He’s killing us with these picks. Must be sleep in the film room.

      1. That had nothing to do with reading coverages the defender stepped out of his cover to make that interception.

  2. So a STs TD off a blocked punt and a pick 6 INT. At some point the Eagles offense will start making plays, they can’t afford to spot them 14 points while the D is doing a good job getting the Eagles off the field.

    1. They both are. The line is giving up pressure right up the gut and Kap is still failing to do the most basic things needed of a qb. He staring down receivers, or taking his eyes off the downfield players thinking their is rush when one isnt really there yet.

  3. It’s looking more and more like that infusion of young blood on STs was not such a hot idea.

  4. such BS – if the QB doesnt want to get blown up, he can stay the heck away from the play. Foles was moving toward the runner

  5. This is why I didn’t want Kaep to get that new contract because he needed at least one more year under his belt.

      1. But I think it hurts his chances of developing. Like I have said before, his contract demands immediate results that he isn’t ready to give the franchise just yet.

    1. question is, after this year, what would you pay him? he’d be another year closer to free agency, so are you sure you could have saved any $ or that somehow he would have played better? tough to know

  6. Why didn’t our QB run for those 2 yards instead of the throw to Crabtree? This guy is killing me.

  7. Well Grant, looks like you were right. Vic Fangio cannot be blamed for the Eagles scoring points against the 49ers.

  8. Huh. Guess they will be picking 5th in the draft. Kaepernicks strength is not decision making. A team like SD would use him successfully.

  9. It’s been said 1000 times here. Kap stares down his receiver from the time he gets the snap. He doesn’t know how to look off a safety to save his life.

  10. All I can say is that thw 49ers should be thanking God that the score is 21-13 because it isn’t indicative of how bad they have played.

    1. Vic Fangio and the D should be livid. They’ve done more than their bit. Yet the team has spotted 21 points to a team that has been explosive offensively in the 2nd half of every game so far this season.

  11. Chip Kelly has balls. He goes for the knock out punch. If the niners were in the same situation, Harbaugh would’ve ran the clock out.

  12. not sure what’s happened to this offense. The play calling is suspicious and they have too many mistakes to get them in rhythm.

  13. Our defense has kept us in this game. I’ve lost my confidence in Kap. He may bring us back to win this game but I’m just wondering what the guy is seeing back there. He’s still confused by covrrages. When all else fails he’s gotta know he has to take off instead of forcing throws. He’s throwing into heavy coverage far too often. Especially when he can’t read it correctly. He’s gotta learn how to sustain the drive not try and hit home runs. Get 5 on 3rd and 4 instead of trying to throw for 24.

    1. I think part of it is he has happy feet due to no time in the pocket. There’s no way the Eagles should get that much pressure. He needs to start stepping up into the pocket more instead of always rolling out.

      1. Most of the pressure is coming from the inside. It’s hard to step up to your pass whe that is the case.

        1. Kaep is not accurate this game that is true, but some of you people are entirely too hard on him. Watch the friggen game. A QB needs to have time consistently to go through reads. Or at least be able to step up in the pocket to keep his eyes forward. When you have to run and watch for defenders coming at you it is easy to lose sight of your receivers. Foles did really well until this game because he had a good offensive line that gave him protection. Today his line isn’t that good but he still isn’t getting the pressure Kaep is.

  14. I’m about to put Ellington into the LMJ category: goes down way too easily sometimes after barely being hit, small guys not only must have that explosive extra gear, they have to be lb for lb toughest guys on the field, like Sproles. I miss Boo and Delanie…

  15. The 49ers have 110 rushing yards on 17 carries.
    ————————
Expect Gore and Hyde to have 5 combined carries inthe 2nd half.

  16. Someone needs to tell these peninsula oligarchs its OK to make noise when the Eagles have the ball.
