49ers vs. Rams live blog: First quarter

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 9 game against the Rams. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

1:03 The Rams win the toss and defer.

1:05 Bruce Ellington takes a knee in the end zone.

1:12 Colin Kaepernick uses the 49ers’ first timeout to avoid a Delay of Game penalty on third-and-10 from the Rams’ 21. The play before, Kaepernick threw a pass right to Lamarcus Joyner but he dropped it. Vernon Davis was open but Kaepernick was locked on Anquan Boldin.

1:15 Kaepernick throws deep into double coverage for Michael Crabtree on third-and-10. The pass sails out of bounds. Incomplete.

1:16 Phil Dawson makes a 34-yard field goal and the score is 3-0. Kaepernick completed three passes on that drive — one to Ellington on  a bubble screen, one to Crabtree on a square in and one to Carlos Hyde on a check down. Frank Gore rushed thrice for 10 yards.

1:19 Bennie Cunningham returns Dawson’s short kickoff 19 yards to the Rams’ 25.

1:21 Austin Davis scrambles and throws the ball away on thrd-and-6 and the Rams go three and out. Little Schotty didn’t call one run for a tailback on that series.

1:22 Ellington returns the punt to the 49ers’ 23.

1:25 Anthony Davis gives up a sack on first down and Kaepernick almost throws a pick on second down. Third and 17.

1:27 Kaepernick scrambles up the middle for 2 yards on third down. Alex Boone is flagged for illegal hands to the face but the Rams decline it. Andy Lee’s punt rolls out of bounds at the Rams’ 25.

1:38 Austin Davis throws the ball away on third-and-7 from the 49ers’ 19. Greg Zuerlein makes a 37-yard field goal and the score is tied at 3. The Rams’ biggest play on that drive was an 11-yard scramble by Davis on second-and-13. The officials added a 5-yard holding penalty on Jimmie Ward to the end of the run.

1:41 Ellington returns the kick 24 yards to the 49ers’ 20.

1:43 Hyde gains 4 yards on first down, Gore gains 11 yards on second down and the first quarter. First and 10 from the 49ers’ 35 when the second quarter starts.

  1. That damn quick slant again. Smh
Bring pressure and make him use one read. Works everytime and yet ck still tried to force it. C’mon man

  2. Tell me, why is it that anyone who has watched this team the last few years instantly knew that the odds of converting that 3rd down went way down as soon as that time out was called?
    And why is that?

  3. Sorry odds went way up I been drinking I hate Roman but we wont gat stuck with Shaw now goodnihjt

  4. I believe our offensive line needs to widen their splits. Spread the defenses and enables them to see where the blitzes are coming from.

  5. We have to do something about these sacks. I feel our offense rarely if ever gets into a good rhythm.
