49ers vs. Redskins live blog: Second quarter

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the second quarter of the 49ers’ Week 12 game against the Redskins. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

2:01 Carlos Hyde runs an inside zone play to his left and fumbles at the line of scrimmage. The Redskins recover at their 40-yard line. Brandon Merriweather forced the fumble.

2:05 Robert Griffin throws a short pass over Pierre Garcon’s head on third-and-7. Three-and-out. Take out Griffin.

2:05 Perrish Cox lets the punt bounce and the Redskins down it at the 49ers’ 5-yard line.

2:10 Niners go three-and-out. Kaepernick scrambles for 1 yard on first down, Gore gains 8 yards cutting a weak-lead run back to the strong side on second down, and Gore gains no yards on an inside zone run to the left on third-and-1. Robert makes a fair catch at the Redskins’ 39.

2:11 Still no Colt McCoy.

2:18 Alfred Morris plows into the end zone from one yard out on third-and-goal. The score is tied at 7. Jay Gruden could have made things much easier simply by calling a blast jet run for Morris on first down. That’s when the running back jumps over the pile. Eddie Lacy scored on that play today.

2:20 Derek Carrier injured his foot and is questionable to return.

2:20 5:33 left in the half.

2:22 On first-and-10 from the 12, Morris ran over Chris Culliver and gained 11 yards. Culliver has to wrap around Morris’ legs not just drop his head and hope for the best.

2:22 Tony Jerod-Eddie is flagged for holding on the kick return. First-and-10 from the Niners’ 7.

2:37 Kaepernick completes a 25-yard pass to Crabtree deep down the right sideline on fourth-and-2 from the Redskins’ 48. Phil Dawson makes the 41-yard field goal before the half ends and the score is 10-7 Niners.

2:39 Three plays before the field goal, Kaepernick got sacked by Ryan Kerrigan, who easily beat Jonathan Martin around the edge. Martin cannot handle Kerrigan. Greg Roman must help Martin by chipping Kerrigan with a running back.

2:41 Crabtree caught three passes and dropped two passes in the first half.

2:50 The 49ers’ offense has not reached the red zone.

  1. I can’t decide who to root for. if the seahawks win we get a little closer to taking the division lead. but if the seahawks lose we have a better chance for a wild card

  2. Our offense just waits around for other teams to beat us. We can even handle Washington at home. Our home field advantage is a disadvantage. Wow!

    1. Hyde has to know when to run it out. He’s trying to hard to make something happen. He should ve downed that.

  3. Is it possible for Roman to call a screen or a quick slant? Anything just to get the offense into rythm ?

    1. I don’t think that’s in the playbook. We’ve been asking for screens since LMJ was drafted.

  4. what???
    excuse me?
    talk to us, Mister Harbaw;
five minutes left in the half and
the Niners are tied 7-7 with the Redskins

    Impress me some more, willya…!!!

      1. He’s #2 TE now, maybe that’s a look for the rest of the season, he hasn’t exactly sparkled at FB this year..

  5. Crabtree is making it real cheap to resign him this offseason. The drops are getting out of hand.

    1. Crabtree will be cheap. We’ve gotta find some speed in the draft. We say that every year and never find a guy.

      1. Jordan—This last draft was the one it would have been possible to do so. To find a fast receiver that can catch will be expensive in most drafts. They are usually scarce and require higher picks, which is why they gambled on AJ.

  6. That fact that we are tied at half, we haven’t scored a 4th qtr touchdown all year, disturbs me. Also the fact that Kaep is trying so hard to become a pocket passer he refuses to run, frustrates me.

    1. That’s exactly the problem. He sits back there a second slower than he used to. It’s cost him about 12 sacks this year. In addition to that, we have ZERO deep threats. We can’t even stretch the field. We need a burner at wide out really bad. Especially since Vernon quit.

      1. Ive been telling a friend of mine this all year. I think that would open up everything for us. Its very hard to play offense when there isnt anyone to threaten the back end!!

  7. Kaepernick = Sack N’ Pick…
Hard to imagine; tied at the half.
    This team, this quarterback,
has no future in the postseason.
There will be no Super Bowl this year.
New stadium and all…my, my, my.

  8. It’s impossible for me to get excited during 9ers games this year. When I watch these games its just like “blah”. Look and listen to the crowd, i heard more cheers during the Cowboys game!!!!

  9. Jordan take a.positive pill. Keep running the ball involve Vernon more. Keep involving Miller.

  10. Harbaugh did a deer–in-headlights-brain-freeze and let several seconds burn away there and Kaep bailled him out with that throw…

    1. I believe running the clock down so they could get off one play with still time to kick a field goal if it was completed was planned. If they don’t convert the Redskins would only have time for one more play themselves and it would be to long for them to try a field goal. It was obvious to me even though the announcers thought it was indecision. Very smart move.

What is up with this offense?

I’m sure you’ll find a way to blame it on ck somehow.

  12. Why is this game on CBS (Crappy Barf System)? Two NFC teams, shouldn’t it be on FOX? These broadcasters are almost as bad as the Niners offense. Another game the Niners should be dominating, and another game bound to go down to the end. Maybe hell will freeze over and they will score a TD in the 4th quarter.

  13. Bay,

Involve Vernon for what?? You’ve been watching this team long enough to know this guy I sent even giving 100% anymore. Miller looks good but he’s a fullback. Play tge 3rd string tight end. At least he tries to catch the football.

  14. NINERS came out fast, first play a pass dropped by Crabtree, but effective in setting the tone. After the next long pass, a TD to Boldin, Niners went full Rombaugh and gave back the lead. Let’s look for some more deep passes, get the back 7 off the line.
