49ers vs. Redskins live blog: Third quarter

SANTA CLARA — This is the live blog for the third quarter of the 49ers’ Week 12 game against the Redskins. I will update this frequently with information and analysis from the press box.

2:52 Carlos Hyde returns the kickoff to the 49ers’ 25-yard line.

2:54 Colin Kaepernick throws deep for Stevie Johnson on second-and-7 and the Redskins drop the interception.

2:55 Kaepernick throws the ball away on third down. Lee punts it 57 yards. Roberts returns it 7 yards to the Redskins’ 22.

3:00 Aldon Smith sacks Robert Griffin for a 7-yard loss on third-and-6 from the 49ers’ 44. Griffin has no pocket presence — he never saw Smith coming, never felt the pressure.

3:01 A redskins player may have just torn his ACL downing the punt.

3:02 First-and-10 at the Niners’ 10 after a penalty.

3:05 How stupid of Jay Gruden not to give Morgan Moses some help vs. Aldon Smith. Gruden must be using the same pass protection philosophy as Greg Roman — leave your young tackles on islands against premier pass rushers. How many ways can you spell dumb?????

3:09 Kaepernick throws deep for Boldin on first-and-10 from the Niners’ 27. Someone named Greg Ducre intercepts the pass. Redskins’ ball at their 33.

3:11 Griffin throws a grounder to a wide-open Roberts on third-and-6. Perrish Cox lets the punt bounce and then fields it at the 49ers’ 8-yard line and gets tackled right away.

3:19 The Redskins stop Kaepernick for no gain on a QB sneak on third-and-1 from the Niners’ 27. Lee punts. Desean Jackson makes a fair catch at the Redskins’ 22.

3:26 Griffin completes a 2-yard pass to Roy Helu on third-and-5. Kai Forbath makes the 27-yard field goal and the score is tied at 10 with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. Earlier in the drive, Aaron Lynch sacked Griffin but was flagged for roughing the passer. Lynch’s helmet hit Griffin’s helmet.

3:30 Hyde returns the kickoff to the Niners’ 27.

3:31 Vernon Davis drops a pass on first down. Michael Crabtree  catches a 4-yard pass on second down but gains zero yards after the catch. Third-and-6 when the fourth quarter begins.

  1. Don’t think Kaep threw that away. Think VD tripped himself. Can we fire Roman and trade VD please?

    1. Then we need Vmac or Celek. We need a tight end in the pass patterns. Maybe Celek us the guy.

      1. Celek was never a good receiver. Basically a blocker. Not even close to the player his brother is. They wasted a roster spot on him for two years. Glade he got injured ( for the sake of Carrier on the roster not to hurt Celek). Don’t know why they even keep Celek on the roster.

    2. I have searched and searched the official video record and cannot find any interference from the Skins’ defensive back, VD just kind of trips and does an amazing somersault rolling fall. But in Davis’ defense the camera does not get there until he is already going down – it just appears that the Skins guy was not close enough to have tripped him and considering Davis’ performance so far with a ton of dropped balls and “…could not make the play(s)” I am convinced he tripped.
      What is his deal?

  2. Is it just me or, looking at Vernon, aside from the way he’s been playing, does he look smaller? Looking at his upper arms, he just doesn’t have that “ripped look” that I remember?

    1. And it’s called back! 8 million for a whopping 18 receptions. Trade him in the offseason! Fast. I’ll take a 4th or 5th!

  3. Colin, was that “another” 3 and out…???
Ya got the sack. Now all ya need is the pick.
    Playing for “the cycle”, huh?
Rushing yards: Gore (24…. 2.4 per carry)
and Hyde (2) that is two yards total… for the half.
Talk about a running game… my, my, my.
Leading the Redskins 10-7 midway thru the 3rd quarter.
Gobble, gobble, gobble (to quote a famous person).

      1. Was not a smart throw by Kaep but the defender pushed off with a forearm to Boldins neck to get the separation and position for that interception. Ref missed that call.

  4. Stupid Roman for calling a play that lead to an INT, I’m sick of his bad play calling.

      1. Did Roman tell Colin to throw the ball no matter what regardless of whether he was open or not? What’s brilliant is throwing to a guy that clearly isn’t open, that takes big brains.

        1. Not a good throw but if the defender doesn’t push off with his forearm on Boldins neck he most surely would have had better position to make that catch. That was actually pass interference.

          1. Darned right. PI, but no red saw it. And Lynch made helmet contact with Reid, not RG3. The refs are just getting warmed up for the Seattle game.

  5. Hopefully they font bench Griffin today. McCoy will come in the game and beat us. That punter is killing us! Guy can kick the crap out of the ball.

  6. Colin Kaepernick’s checklist:
    got sacked – check
    got picked – check
    got earphones – check/check

one touchdown through three quarters against
    the Redskins…..KAPURNICUS..!!!!!!
    elite QB? naw
    top tier QB? naw

  7. Our line can’t win against theirs. Why do we keep challenging middle of the line? Run Hyde wide…. No push.

  8. was there a question about Frank Gore’s
    productivity/value to the team?
aside from his 8-year “burst” he has
a whopping 1.9 yards per carry on 10 other attempts.

Coach Harbaw: were you counting on Colin’s passing game
to sustain the offense? or did you just make a mistake in
believing that Frank Gore had any juice left…???

  9. Where was the tripping call against the skins? Did you see the TE continuing to roll at Aldon smith’s legs?

  10. Thre is absolutely no rhythm on offense. Weather it’s playcalling or execution, there hasn’t been any sustained rhythm all season

    1. Mj- you can see that clearly from the back view camera. Another fine on a helmet to helmet that won’t be levied by the league but too late to do the Niners any good.

  11. Quarterly scoring average since 1-12-14 (12 games)
    First, 6.1, Second, 7.9, Third 4.3, Fourth 2.4

  12. Quarterly scoring average for the past 12 games:
    First…….. 6.1
    Second… 7.9
    Third …….4.3
    Fourth …..2.4

    So here we are:
tied with the Redskins to start the fourth quarter.
And Seattle has locked up a win over Arizona,
    playing strong defense and offense.
The sharks (Seahawks) smell blood in the water…

  13. This is a joke..I dont know what to think of this..this has to be one of the worst offenses in NFL history. .I mean I want to watch to be entertained. ..this looks like a high school game

  14. Roman is pathetic and has been wasting talent for years. If Harbaugh doesn’t fire him, Harbaugh should be gone as well.
