49ers as shocked as anybody

Think Glen Coffee’s decision to walk away from football – possibly forever – took the 49ers by surprise? Check out their web site. The lead story this morning was titled “49ers Eagerly Await Full Contact.” It was a look ahead to this Sunday’s game at Indianapolis, and it prominently featured… Glen Coffee.

The article talks about a couple of the 49ers’ more physical players, leading with rookie safety Taylor Mays. It then moves on to the player who told coach Mike Singletary this morning that he is leaving the game:

“Coffee on the other hand, is looking to continue establishing himself as a physical runner in the NFL – that’s why he added 17 pounds of muscle in the offseason following his rookie campaign.

“Standing at a comfortable playing weight of 209 pounds, the 6-foot running back plans to showcase his improved between-the-tackles ground game beginning in the preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts this Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.

” ‘Getting in the game is what we live for, so I’m ready for it,’ Coffee said. ‘It’s what we practice for.’ “

Apparently, Coffee has other things to live for now. Not to make fun of the Niners. Using Coffee wasn’t a mistake; he really did appear to be working as hard as anyone this summer. It simply demonstrates that they were as shocked as any of us to get the news.
