49ers can’t afford to look ahead to next week

Looking ahead a week, it could be the biggest December game the 49ers have played in a long while. But, first, the 49ers have to take care of business today against the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s 35 degrees here at Qwest Field, where the 49ers face a crucial NFC West game against the Seahawks. There is not much wind, so I don’t expect the elements to be much of a factor.

If the 49ers defeat the Seahawks AND the Cardinals lose to the Vikings tonight, the 49ers and Cardinals will meet Monday night, Dec. 14, for the lead in the NFC West.

The Seahawks, meanwhile, can pull into a tie with the 49ers for second place in the division with a win today.

Balmer did not practice all week due to a shoulder injury he sustained a week ago against the Jaguars. That means rookie defensive lineman Ricky Jean-Francois will suit up for the third time this season. He has yet to get into a regular-season game, though. Ray McDonald and Demetric Evans are the backup defensive linemen who will see action in the rotation.

From today’s Press Democrat, I wrote more the matchup decision the Seahawks must make with Delanie Walker on the field.
