49ers own Nos. 13 and 17 choices in first round

The highly anticipated coin toss took place this morning between the Titans and Panthers at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Both teams wanted the Titans to win, but I have confirmed the toss did not involve a two-headed nickel. But both teams got their wish, meaning the Titans get the No. 16 slot in the first round. Because the 49ers acquired the Panthers’ top pick a year ago, San Francisco gets the No. 17 pick.

The 49ers’ first-round draft picks are scheduled for No. 13 and No. 17 on Thursday, April 22.

The reason the Panthers wanted Tennessee to win the coin toss is because teams with the same records flip drafting position every round. So Carolina will get the 16th pick in the second round.

If you’re keeping score at home, I projected this occurrence in my first mock draft. In fact, I correctly projected two of the three coin tosses. (I was correct on Jaguars over Broncos, and Titans over 49ers, but failed miserably to anticipate the Falcons winning their 19/20 toss over the Texans.

UPDATE: Aside from selecting one spot back in the first round, the result of the coin toss means the 49ers can sign the No. 17 overall selection to a contract no longer than five seasons. For picks 1-16, a contract can be no longer than six years. Picks 17-32 can sign contracts no longer than five years, and for picks from 33 to the end of the draft, four seasons is the maximum contract length.
