49ers’ Pro Bowl summary: First quarter

The 49ers have strong representation in the Pro Bowl with four players suiting up for the game. We’ll provide a summary of each 49ers player at the conclusion of all four quarters.

Here is how the 49ers players fared in the first quarter, which ended with the AFC leading 14-10:

PBVernon.jpgTE Vernon Davis
: He earned the starting job, and made his presence felt on the NFC’s second offensive play when he ran a crossing route to haul in a pass from QB Aaron Rodgers that he turned into a 36-yard gain. That play helped set up an NFC field goal. . . . Rodgers also threw incomplete to Davis on that first drive . . . Davis played 12 of the NFC’s 16 offensive plays in the quarter.

RB Frank Gore: He did not play in the first quarter.

P Andy Lee: Was the holder on David Akers’ 47-yard field goal with 9:24 left in the quarter, as well as an extra point.

DL Justin Smith: Entered the game at right defensive tackle on a second-and-6 situation on first drive. . . . On next play, a third-and-3, Smith bull-rushed Jets left guard Alan Faneca and knocked him on his backside. Smith, who during the season has a motor that won’t stop, stopped – as if to apologize to Faneca. While that was happening, AFC QB Matt Schaub hit Andre Johnson on a 33-yard touchdown pass. . . . He played six snaps and did not have a tackle.

Patrick Willis: He did not suit up due to swelling in his right knee (bursitis). Jon Beason (Panthers) took his place on the NFC squad.
