Mike Florio says Alex Smith could be the next Wally Pipp

Mike Florio of NBC’s Pro Football Talk just reported that Alex Smith is getting a second opinion on the concussion that forced him out of the Rams game in the second quarter. You can read Florio’s article here.

What affect do you think this will have on Smith’s status for Monday night’s game against the Chicago Bears? Florio speculates that Smith is looking for a second opinion “that points to a mild concussion or no concussion.” Florio says it’s unclear whether a second opinion would have an effect on the independent neurologist’s decision.

At the end of the article, Florio says Smith is in danger of becoming “the sports world’s next Wally Pipp.” Do you agree or disagree?

If you’re not familiar with Pipp, he was the Yankees first baseman before Lou Gehrig. Pipp missed one game with a headache and never got his job back.
