The 49ers sent out a press release this morning explaining that they’ve officially signed linebacker Tavares Gooden, and that they cut Antwan Applewhite to make room on the roster for their newest linebacker.
Under Vic Fangio, who was the defensive coordinator in Baltimore from 2006-2009, Gooden played inside linebacker next to Ray Lewis, but it seems like Fangio wants him to be an outside linebacker who specializes in coverage – the type of player the Niners used to have in Manny Lawson.
Fangio will speak to the media this morning at 11:30, and I’m sure he’ll explain the Niners’ pursuit of Gooden, among other things.
