Arik Armstead goes to I.R. with a broken hand

The 49ers just announced Arik Armstead is on the Injured Reserve list with a broken hand which will require surgery.

Armstead, 23, appeared to injure his left hand with eight minutes left in the second quarter Sunday against the Redskins. Before his final play, he gingerly placed his left hand on the ground while assuming his four-point stance. After the play, he grabbed his left hand while it hung from his wrist.

Armstead recorded eight tackles and 1.5 sacks through six games before his injury. He is a former first-round draft pick, and he has one season remaining on his rookie contract with the 49ers.

Armstead’s immediate replacement could be veteran Dekoda Watson. In the long term, Ronald Blair will be eligible to return from I.R. during Week 9, and Tank Carradine will be eligible to return from I.R. during Week 12 — either can fill Armstead’s role on the defense.

The 49ers also announced the release of third-string tight end Logan Paulsen. To fill Paulsen’s and Armstead’s spots on the roster, the 49ers signed defensive tackles Tony McDaniel (32) and Leger Douzable (31).

  1. Hikutini will take over for Paulsen. Hopefully, he will get more than the one target tht Paulsen got. I don’t think this move would have been made unless KS thought that Hikutini was ready to play, similar to CJ.

    1. I think this is just more of the youth movement we are seeing. Shanahan wants to see what they have.

        1. They could have used the old washed up player this weekend. Probably going forward too. Instead, we will have to watch the silver and black optimize his contributions.

          1. They thought Foster might play. Once Bow asked for a trade, they decided to make Foster play MIKE. Agree that we could have used him Sunday. But he was unhappy and wanted out. Bow is a vet. His poor attitude could rub off on our young team.

            1. He wanted to contribute while his employer was trying to phase him out. He did the only thing available to him. Don’t fault him at all.

The sideline reporter said something curious, that Shanahan had an open door policy regarding the situation with Bowman and no one came. Funny, I wouldn’t either if I saw what happened to Bowman for speaking out. I’d play ball too. But I bet you there will be stories after the season when players move on.

  2. More youth movement. Paulson has had his few chances and blown most of them. Hikutini will now get his chance to show if he can play.

Shame about Armstead. Despite his being a whipping boy, he’s actually played reasonably well considering he’s been playing at the wrong weight/position. He really needs a 3-4 team with a strong edge rusher. Then he can just forklift OTs back into the pocket and flush them for the speed rushers. He’s very good at that.

  3. Did you guys hear about the attempted robbery of Ray-Ray and Rueben. Both got away. Surprised Ray-Ray didn’t get flagged.

  4. Glad the Niners are making moves.
    .
Posters who want the Niners to get rid of Armstead do not think of the consequences. He is very reasonable under his rookie contract, and provides good depth on the defensive line. I do not want to see him traded, but if they do trade him, I hope he commands a second round pick for him.

Sorry to see Bow go. I wish him well. Looks like the Raiders need him.
    .
However, I question them making the move without Foster ready to play. Both Coyle and Ray Ray were not playing well.
    .
Everything was falling apart when Washington went up by 17 points. It was a masterful move to put in CJB, and he provided a spark, leading the Niners to a stirring comeback, and he almost won, except for that blatantly unfair call that moved them out of field goal range. It was almost as if the POTUS was pulling strings to make sure a liberal California team that knelt, did not win in his back yard.

Sorry to see Paulsen go, but they need pass catchers, not blockers.
    .
Hope Grant posts what Jed had to say.
    .
The gun epidemic is affecting the Niners. It is hard to out run an assault weapon. They can spray death from 400 yards, and have been known to kill up to half a mile. Reuben and Ray Ray may easily have become victims of senseless gun violence. Next time I hope they call the police ahead of time, so they could scare the robbers away, or at least present a deterrence.

  5. If the Niners are looking at DTs, they should look at Ahtyba Rubin, who was just released from the Broncos.

  6. Another one of Baalke’s ‘weight room warriors’, but gridiron creampuffs goes down….We saw this was coming, didn’t we ?

I remember when Michael Carter played NT during the 49er team of the 80’s run with a cast on his broken arm for the NFC Championship game and Ronnie Lott cut his finger off to play in the playoffs ?…..Creampuff 49ers 2014-2017 editions.

  7. As a matter of fact, every Baalke GM’d 49ers squad were a camp of creampuffs.

He rode to town on Scott McCloughan’s coattails and left like the slow kid who can’t get his building blocks to balance w/o help from the teacher (Scott McCloughan).

The sad thing is that Jed was in the same class room as Trent and they were buddies.
