Battle scheduled to visit Pittsburgh; Seattle trip on hold

Free-agent wide receiver Arnaz Battle does not figure to be back with the 49ers next season, but he is getting some play on the free-agent market.

Battle, a seven-year player, is scheduled to visit the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, according to a league source. He had a tentative trip scheduled to meet with the Seattle Seahawks, but those plans are on hold.

Just a wild guess, but that might have something to do with the Seahawks’ interest in Denver restricted free agent Brandon Marshall, who is reportedly scheduled for a Saturday visit.

Battle began last season as the 49ers’ No. 3 receiver, but he kept sliding down the depth chart. He does not fit into the 49ers’ plans for 2010, as the club has young receivers such as Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Jason Hill and Brandon Jones ahead of him. He caught just five passes for 40 yards.

The Steelers receivers are: Hines Ward (95 catches, 1,167 yards, six TDs), Santonio Holmes (79-1,248-5), Mike Wallace (39-756-6), Limas Sweed (1-5-0), Stefan Logan (1-5-0)and Tyler Grisham (1-14-0).

Battle would also be counted upon to be a core special teams player.
