Bears-49ers matchups: Part III – Julius Peppers vs. Joe Staley and Anthony Davis

The 49ers play the Bears Monday night at Candlestick.  In the meantime, I’ll break down five key matchups.

DE Julius Peppers vs. OT Joe Staley and OT Anthony Davis

Peppers had a terrific game against the Texans last week, recording 1 sack, 1 QB hit and 2 hurries.

Peppers is one of the best pass rushers in the NFL. He rushes from both the right and left defensive end positions. He’ll face both Joe Staley and Anthony Davis, who are are having good seasons but are better run blockers than pass protectors. Staley gave up 1 sack and 1 hurry last week. Davis gave up 1 sack and 6 hurries. They’re prone to getting beat around the edge by premier pass rushers. It’s doubtful either Staley or Davis can hold up consistently against Peppers.

The 49ers can minimize Peppers impact by running the ball and throwing quick passes, but he’ll cause problems for the Niners in obvious passing situations.

Advantage: Bears
