Bruce Miller: “I learned a lot about myself, maybe different ways to deal with situations.”

SANTA CLARA

Bruce Miller spoke to the media Friday afternoon for the first time this offseason. Here’s a transcript.

Q: How are you approaching the rest of your offseason?

MILLER: Onward and upward. Moving forward. It’s great to be back here with the guys and feel a part of the team, just get back to doing what I know how to do, and that’s play football. I want to apologize to everyone that this had a negative effect on. And we’re moving forward. Onward and upward.

Q: What has been the most difficult part of this offseason for you?

MILLER: Everything. It has been a difficult one. Not being able to be here with the guys was tough. I wanted to be here. I have a great support system, and they were a huge part of that. Getting back here was huge.

Q: Where did you work out this offseason?

MILLER: I was in Atlanta for a long time. The training facility I was at when I came out, I was there for a long time. And then here for a few weeks. I have a buddy I was training with.

Q: What is the name of the training facility?

MILLER: Competitive edge.

Q: Your case was resolved Tuesday. Were you able to be here Tuesday?

MILLER: I was here Wednesday. Got my first practice in yesterday.

Q: When you came back did you have to have a sit down with Trent Baalke and Jim Tomsula?

MILLER: I sat down with them. I’ve spoken with them quite a few times. I completely understand the expectations of me. I have those same expectations. We’re on the same page.

Q: What did you learn from what happened?

MILLER: I learned a lot about myself, maybe different ways to deal with situations. Definitely learned a lot about me.

Q: People that know you know what kind of person you are. When the issue was reported, people who don’t know you lumped you into the same category as others. Was that tough for you and your family?

MILLER: That was very tough. That was another thing I had to learn. People are going to think what they want to think. People who know me, I didn’t have to explain myself one time.

Q: This was handled as a domestic violence issue. Did you ever touch her?

MILLER: Didn’t happen. No.

Q: You have some counseling to do. When will you do it?

MILLER: I’m not exactly sure of all the details yet. We’re still ironing those out. I’ve completely committed to taking the steps necessary to be here and part of this football team.

Q: What’s it like coming back to this team and Anthony Davis is gone, Justin Smith is gone, Patrick Willis is gone and Chris Borland is gone?

MILLER: A lot of new faces, that’s for sure. From what I can see, very talented group of guys. Excited to be here and be a part of it.

Q: What’s the learning curve for you like right now, considering yesterday was your first practice? New system…

MILLER: Just re-teaching myself terminology. Trying not to compare or correlate it to things we did last year. Just relearning, re-teaching myself all the key terms we’ve gone over the past few weeks.

Q: The prosecutor said this course will help you deal with underlying anger issues. Is that an issue you need to address? Obviously you know what he said.

MILLER: I’m aware of what he said. I’m aware of what he said. I’ll deal with what I have to do to be a part of this football team.

  1. I think what Miller and a lot of other young guys need is some counseling on how to recognize and stay away from crazy women.

      1. By the way, my “crazy wife” just told me she would recommend breaking an engagement with any women who called the cops over a cell phone broken in anger. I keep her well supplied with cell phones.

        1. The only “Crazy Women” I still associate with is an ex who presently lives in Kansas and it’s purely over the phone Aka W. Harrelsons song ” Kansas City”.

  2. “Trying not to compare or correlate it to things we did last year. Just relearning, re-teaching myself all the key terms we’ve gone over the past few weeks.”

Though the 49ers are super secretive and the new systems, it sounds like the offensive changes are extensive. New terminology. Uptempo. Increased zone blocking (to what extent?). More passes to backs.

I wonder if the new regime will feature fullbacks as much as the last one.

    1. All these new unknowns make this new season resemble a present yet unopened. This is actually making me kind of excited for the coming season. Don’t expect much while still leaving open the possibility of a pleasant surprise.

  3. Oh Grant! I must say I have enjoyed your articles on the BR. The majority of past writers seemed to have no actual clue about the Niner’s except what they might have learned through the ” Grape vine”. Irregardless as to whether I agree or disagree with your articles individually, it has been refreshing to read articles from authors who actually have contact with the team and are not just repeating what they have heard or gleaned by studying the roster and stats.
