Singletary: 49ers front office was ‘not one guy’

Coach Mike Singletary said the 49ers’ personnel department was not all about former general manager Scot McCloughan. Singletary made his first comments on the 49ers’ front-office-in-flux at the annual NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla.   “Don’t get me wrong: we lost a very valuable guy in Scot,” Singletary said in a report. “But at the same time, we’ve got a lot of people that do a lot of great work…

Singletary discusses offense and questionable officiating

There’s plenty to discuss from the 49ers’ loss yesterday to the Seahawks, and coach Mike Singletary had a lot of explaining to do during his Monday press conference.   Afterward, Seattle coach Jim Mora intimated that it worked to the Seahawks’ advantage that the 49ers leaned so heavily on the pass and got away quickly from giving the football to running back Frank Gore.   “I think there were several…

More to accomplish in ’09 even without playoffs

Mike Singletary was as compelling as ever during his Monday press conference. One thing that is very apparent is that Mike Singletary tries. He tries very hard.   He listens to the questions and he does a good job of giving a thorough answer. It’s not like he’s pre-programmed to give a set answer regardless of the question asked of him.

Bears had chance to land coach Singletary and passed

After a decade out of the game, Mike Singletary and his wife, Kim, decided the time was right for him to pursue a coaching career. Understandably, he made contact with the Chicago Bears to see if the organization would be interested.   Singletary, a Hall of Fame linebacker with the Bears, called then-Bears coach Dick Jauron as a courtesy.   As he recalled today during his weekly press conference, Singletary…

Smith 49ers’ best chance, Singletary said

Alex Smith will re-enter the starting lineup on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, coach Mike Singletary said. Bly apologizes; Rossum released

Mike Singletary had just started his weekly press conference when cornerback Dre’ Bly entered the room. He then issued a public apology for celebrating – a la Deion Sanders – when he was still 75 yards from the end zone.   Also, today, the 49ers informed return specialist Allen Rossum of his release. The 49ers needed to clear a roster spot to activate rookie receiver Michael Crabtree to the 49ers’…

Gore’s injury ‘not believed to be serious’

Running back Frank Gore nursed a right ankle injury last week, taking part in limited practice. On the first play on which he touched the ball, Gore came up hobbling.   But 49ers coach Mike Singletary says the injury sustained early in the game Sunday against the Vikings is not related to Gore’s pre-existing condition. We’re trying to get official word from the 49ers’ medical staff.

Singletary wants line, not QB, to carry the load

The 49ers have won two games this season while fashioning the league’s 30th-ranked passing attack. There will be a time when the 49ers need a little more production from quarterback Shaun Hill.   But coach Mike Singletary said he hopes that day does not come any time soon. At his weekly press conference today, Singletary said he envisions a team that relies on its offensive line and defense.
