Colin Kaepernick on the Cowboys’ defense: “They’re physical. They’re fast. They know what they’re doing out there.”

SANTA CLARA — Colin Kaepernick was interviewed next to his locker Wednesday afternoon. Here’s a transcript.

Q: If this game turns into a shootout, are you ready for that? Do you enjoy that kind of a game?

KAEPERNICK: Of course. We’re always ready to score points.

Q: What challenges does the Cowboys’ defense pose to you?

KAEPERNICK: They’re very physical. They’re very fast. They know what they’re doing out there. You have to be ready for them.

Q: With the defense in flux, do you feel like the offense will be in position to carry this team early on?

KAEPERNICK: I think we have the ability to do that, but we have great defensive players still on that field. I don’t think there will be a drop off.

Q: Did Alex Boone come back in shape?

KAEPERNICK: Yeah. Boone’s always working hard.

Q: What has impressed you about Daniel Kilgore?

KAEPERNICK: He’s been very confident with what he’s doing. He’s making all the right calls and right decisions which gives confidence to everyone else.

Q: How complicated are the calls he has to make?

KAEPERNICK: There is a lot on his plate, but it’s something he’s very capable of handling and he has up to this point.

Q: Who’s your No.3 receiver?

KAEPERNICK: That will be coach’s decision.

Q: What did you learn about some of the guys stepping up in Aldon’s absence?

KAEPERNICK: That players on this team will rise to the occasion. When someone goes down, when someone isn’t on the field, we have people that will step in and play well.

Q: How different will it be when it really counts?

KAEPERNICK: We don’t talk about our scheme or what we do, but we’ll be much more prepared for the Cowboys.

Q: You’ve had to deal with some big distractions the past couple of years. What do you have to do as a team leader to help the team get past what’s going on now with Ray McDonald?

KAEPERNICK: We just have to stay focused on what we’re trying to do and that’s win a Super Bowl. If everyone’s eyes are set there we’ll be alright.

Q: We didn’t get to see a lot of Stevie Johnson this season. What can we expect to see from him?

KAEPERNICK: He’s going to be open, that’s one thing we’ve learned about him. He does some things that are unorthodox, but he’s going to get separation, he’s going to catch the ball and he’s going to make plays.

Q: The Cowboys defense statistically was one of the worst in NFL history last season. They’ve lost some key guys. What specifically about their defense could give you guys some challenges?

KAEPERNICK: Their physical nature. They play fast, they play hard. Last year really doesn’t mean anything when you’re starting a new season. They’re going to have a new defense, a revamped defense. It’s not something we’re looking at as far as them being bad. We’re trying to focus on what we have to do to counteract what they’re doing.

Q: What are your thoughts on Tony Romo?

KAEPERNICK: Romo is a great player. He’s always going to keep his offense and the team in the game. They have the ability to put up a lot of points, so we have to be ready for that.

    1. A broken foot and playing lights out like that? Talk about toughness. I’m looking for this kid to be a starter in a year or two.
