  1. Kaepernick needs to win the starting job and show he’s still got game if he wants to avoid that reduction in salary next year….

    Kelly on Kap:

Fan’s, Gabbert beat out Kap and will beat him out again when it comes to speed reading and throwing accuracy in camp competition…Frankly, I, for one, look forward to putting an end to Baalke’s blown draft pick and favored son, who never earned the job through competition, but was given the job so Baalke could cover his ass on yet another LaMichael James second round bust we have In Kap.

Obviously, Kap is an extremely talented football player and you need to have a good quarterback to win,” Kelly said. “But I was also impressed with how Blaine played this year also. So I think both of those players made this an attractive situation.”

    Let the Competition Begin!

    1. Just my opinion, but I believe if we would have had Chip Kelly with LMJ, he would have had a far bigger roll. Balkee drafted him to be a playmaker. He couldn’t be that in harbaughs offense. Was not big enough

    2. last time I checked Harbaugh was the one who wanted and pushed to draft Kap. Also Harbaugh was the one who played him in place of Alex.

  3. I mean, MWD and I discussed this weeks ago and the thought of Kelly + Kaepernick was a very intriguing thought, but that’s all it was. Now that it’s a reality, it will be very interesting to see how Colin responds. I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out. Get your Chips n Kap ready….

    1. Doctson is an intriguing prospect for me. I find myself really liking what he brings to the table. Excellent length, leaping ability and strong hands. Deceptive speed. I see a lot of scouting reports saying his speed isn’t that great but I think the reason people say that is he is so smooth and runs under control. When he needs an extra gear he has it. He almost looks lackadaisical at times running routes, but I think this is also part of the plan. He gets DBs with sharp timed bursts of speed to get himself open.

I’d be nervous taking him at 7, but he is a WR I like.

        1. I’ve not watched a lot of film on WRs yet, but from what I have seen he is my early favorite too.

          1. I’d take either one over Myles Jack. We need a #1 CB and a #1 WR.

            1. I don’t know, Mid. Very good ILB play in a 3-4 is critical to a good defense. I don’t have the stats to back this up, but it sure seemed to me like we often got killed with intermediate passes in the middle to receivers that an ILB would cover. I don’t know enough about Jack to comment on if he would be the guy that can elevate the play in the 49ers 3-4 defense. A lot of guys on this blog that are good at scouting prospects seem to like him.

              1. Completely agree cubus. 49ers were killed all year over the middle because the ILBs couldn’t cover. A great, do it all ILB can be a game changer, as 49ers fans should well know.

As to whether Jack is that guy, I’m not 100% sure. I don’t feel as good about him as I did Jaylon Smith. But he’s certainly got the athletic traits to be great.

              2. Very good ILB play in a 3-4 is critical to a good defense. I don’t have the stats to back this up, but it sure seemed to me like we often got killed with intermediate passes in the middle to receivers that an ILB would cover.

I’m not saying to bypass the position Cubus. I don’t see a reason to draft one at #7. Sign Johnson to a short-term deal and draft Jaylon Smith in the second or third round as his eventual replacement.

              3. Mid, I have to say, Myles Jack does give me something of the willies as a prospect. Great athlete, but not all there mentally. You may be right they are better off going a different direction to fix the ILB spot.

              4. Mid:

After I posted, I was thinking about when the 49ers might consider drafting Jaylon Smith. I was going to ask if people thought we should draft him if he is still there in the 2nd round. I see that you would.

              5. The otherworldly combination of athleticism and physicality screams top five talent in my books, with regard to Myles Jack….

              6. Yeah, I’d take him at #7 razor, but he’s a guy I wouldn’t be surprised ends up being a disappointment.

Cubus, I would be fine with the team taking Jaylon Smith in the second such is his talent (though I wouldn’t unless we hear the knee is recovering well post surgery), but I have read that he could easily still go in the first round.

              7. The otherworldly combination of athleticism and physicality screams top five talent in my books, with regard to Myles Jack….

That was said about Clowney too.

              8. Didn’t Clowney suffer a critical injury early in his career and had more than one surgery, like a microfracture or something?

              9. Those injuries had nothing to do with him leaving his team before a playoff game because he wasn’t happy that he was deactivated.

              10. Yea, but they stunted his development in the system. Besides, they are different people with different personalities. They both share elite skill traits and that’s the extent of it….

        1. Probably not the comparison people want to hear, but he reminds me a bit of Brandon Lloyd. I think he’s a better prospect coming out of college, more NFL ready, but similar type of game.

      1. Doctson is another name that was brought up back when we started talking about Wentz. He’s been slowing climbing but again, like Wentz top 10 conversation is not anywhere near where I see him going.

        1. In fact I just made a comment the other day to Grant that he’d be perfect at #71. He’s going to have to have a blazing fast time at Indy to even get into the late first round conversation.

        2. No way in hell. Now I can see a guy like Michael Thomas climb into the top 10 after the underwear olympics, but I wouldn’t take any WR that high in this draft. Especially when I might be able to get a WR like Carroo later on due to teams taking him off their draft board for his dva and suspension….

    2. “Somewhere in there he said we’re going to run the ball”. That pretty much says it all for Trent Baalke for me. Mr. I’m in charge of the roster speaks for our HC. Hard to not feel sorry for Tomsula when your GM completely undermines him on day 1. If Tomsula had any chance for success he would have made it clear to Baalke to shut his f–in mouth about how the offense would function or told him, “No Trent, you’re going to give me the roster and I’m going to dictate how were going to win”. If Kelly hasn’t clarified this point with certainty, we’re in for more of the same. No one has yet expressed the concern that as far as Baalke is concerned Kelly’s best attribute is that he has the defense on the field much longer than other coaches. Maybe Kelly will even punt on third down instead of throwing 4 yard passes when they need 6 yards. That will give our defense much more time to score by itself. Say what you want about Seb, but he’s dead right about one thing. There is no justification for putting that offensive line out game after game and Baalke gets the credit for that. A good HC would have done nothing but pass with that line in the hopes that out of the two options, they could at least perfect one of them – and maybe our best offensive plays would be pass interference calls! Anything but what we did would net us more than 14 points per game average (including defensive scores).

      1. Previously, I have suggested the third down bomb. Aaron Rodgers just executed that play, but it was on 4th down. It is essentially a Hail Mary pass.
I totally agree. Baalke deserves more blame. He micromanaged the lineup and dictated who will play. He cut Hayne on the team bus, then signed crapola couch potatoes instead of elevating Hayne. I have no doubt that he refused to allow Hayne to field punts, which was obtuse when the punt returner would just call for fair catches even while behind. If Baalke keeps meddling and trying to coach, he should be sent to Sacto too. Baalke was the leaker, and is the leaker, so Jed should grow a pair and part ways with him.

  4. If I was one of those conspirator theorist’s, I’d say Gamble tipped them off to the possibility of it going south for Chip as soon as he was hired, and was a conduit between the two, with possibly an agreement. Maybe that’s what pulled the plug on Gase at the last minute and prompted them to activate their plan, set Jimmy and his merry men up for failure and clean house at the end of the year when Kelly became available….

    1. That’s quite the conspiracy. I find it hard to believe, but it is the 49ers. Anything is possible.

      1. You know it wouldn’t surprise me, but as you say, I find it about as slim as Kaepernick playing for the 49ers again….

    2. I think Gamble knew the inner workings of the Eagles and guessed the whole scenario. Still, it was interesting to see the Niner interest in Payton, Gase and Hue, with Chip falling in their lap.

  5. Interesting….We do have Baalke still. Does Gamble and Jed plan on letting him draft wide receivers again, or have they seen enough to allow the offensive side of the draft.

  6. Kap may not be with the 49ers beacause of his salary and Bradford already knows this offense.

I generally think that Kelly liked Sam Bradford a lot–he volunteered that at the presser, wait, against CBA rules!–and maybe that means he isn’t necessarily day-dreaming about Kaepernick running his offense.
Such as: Would Kaepernick accept a pay cut, maybe down to $6M, which would slot him into competition for the No. 1 spot with Blaine Gabbert?

I doubt Kaepernick would accept that; if that’s where this is headed, I believe Kaepernick would say go ahead and cut me before April 1 and let me be a free agent.

    But that’s just a guess.

And remember: Bradford is a pending free agent.

    T. Kawakami

    1. My early prediction is that Kap is gone and Bradford is in this year. I don’t have a problem with this, if Chip feels good about Bradford in this system, the guy struggles staying healthy, but we’ll have Gabbert ready to go if SB goes down. The question is, at what price does Sam come in at? Maybe he signs a short term mid range prove-it deal ($4-$6 mil for 1-2 years), while Chip convinces him he’ll get a payday if he proves he’s worth it.

We need to hire some coaches already!!! This is testing my patience.

    2. Kaep will be there and Kelly wants him! Must we remember he tried to trade for Kaep just a year ago,wks before he traded for Bradford. Bradford was a chess piece he tried to use to draft the Duck’s QB. If Bradford worked out a deal he would have been traded to the Browns for there 1st round pick. He was stuck with Bradford and made the best of it. actually,Bradford held his offense back because he was not a run threat.

  7. I’m sure some people will accuse me of hitting the bottle too early but I think if Reggie Bush can remain healthy he can be really good in Chip Kelly’s offense.

  8. If he did, good for him. I would do the same thing. So would you. Who wouldn’t want to tell an employer, “You’re firing me? No, I don’t think so. I’ll stay and earn $15.9 million this year, thank you very much. By the way, my thumb hurts.”

Lazy, self righteous, and cheaters would do this type of thing. And if he does this, he will never play football again in the NFL. Teams and owners frown upon decitfulness.

    1. “Teams and owners frown upon decitfulness.”

      The pinnacle of hypocrisy.
      (but not spelling)

    2. Like Baalke did when negotiating the contract extension by telling Kaepernick that he’d resign key pieces?

  9. I brought this up 2 weeks ago. His agent cost him 3 million in 2015, but earned him 15 million in 2016.

    1. I cant see the Niners paying him that much if they dont want to or believe he is the future.

      1. No matter who starts, combined, Kaepernick plus Gabbert amounts to 17 million. I’d say that’s a bargain if Bradford thinks he’s worth 25 million….

    2. So my time frame was a week off. I said this a week ago. Plagiarized but I understand it’s a slow day in news feeds.

This is a fantastic point I completely missed. However, it would be my cautious optimism that Baalke would sit with Kelly (during the honey moon period of this relationship and allow Kelly to make the decision on Kaepernick. It will be a 1 year leash.
Although, I wonder if Gabbert is more capable of running Kelly’s offense than Kaepernick, just because Gabbert can read a defense. Kaepernick obviously couldn’t even read his contract because that scheduled shoulder surgery tantrum cost him 3 million in 2015. I think it is fortuitous now that his agent schedule a knee and thumb tendon surgery with the April 1st deadline. It puts pressure on the 49ers FO. Is Kaepernick tradeable before the April 1 physical?

Here is the actual report of the surgery:

      http://www.examiner.com/article/kaepernick-undergoes-surgery-on-knee-thumb

Per multiple reports, Kaepernick is expected to have a cast on his thumb for the next six weeks or so and that he’d be fully recovered in three months. That’s the same timeline for him to be ready after surgery on the labrum in his left shoulder and the knee is expected to be OK before either of those injuries.

  10. You have a big imagination Grant. BTW congrats on getting a regular column on the main site.

      1. What Grant dosen’t understand is Mora Sr or Jr can’t stand the York’s — Jed or his father. I lived on the next lot over from Sr for over 20 years and my father played golf with him twice a week when he wasn’t working…..and I promise you from first hand knowledge Mora’s knew long ago the York’s did not have a clue.

  11. The timing of the surgeries certainly gives Kap a ton of leverage for 2016. I think the 49ers know they are stuck with paying him for one more year and that’s why they aren’t saying anything about him.

    1. Just thinking out loud, but what if the 49ers give Kap an injury settlement or pay him and trade him. I don’t even know if that is possible, but it might make it easier for a new team to acquire him and we might get something in return. Not sure if an injury settlement would count when it comes to offsets.

      1. In a negotiation, Kap has no incentive to accept less than his full base salary with no offsets. There’s no reason to cut the team any slack at this point. If I’m Kap and Baalke tries to offer any less, I smile and say “see you at OTAs.”

        1. If he does that he just alienated himself that much further. Already known for bein a loner and a bad teammate, how do you think he wll be received now or by other teams in the NFL?

            1. He will get his money by going to another team. But your suggestion that he should be that guy and force the teams hand is childish. He can get paid and play if he does it the right way but by being a hard case makes he out of the league real fast.

              1. If he is the player some of you say he is, he will. But he needs a team, willing to entrust in him to do that. The 49ers gave him a shot, a new change of scenery is what he needs.

        2. Okay, so that’s your opinion. But what about my question? I’m suggesting a scenario where the 49ers want to be rid of Kap and Kap wants to go; now the search for an equitable way of making that happen. Say a team is interested in Kap but won’t pay more than $5 million for the first year. So, the niners pay Kap $7 to 8 million or so (maybe through an injury settlement or some other method) and then trade him to said team for some compensation – say a 5th round pick.

          1. Very possible scenario Cubus. My question is why would CK hold the Niners hostsge? For spite, the 12 million owed to him? Its a quick way to label yourself as that guy and one where teams around the league wont touch you.

            1. Not sure if I agree, Prime. If they negotiate such a settlement I don’t think there will be any lasting harm to Kap’s image, because all parties would at least seem to be satisfied. It is a business after all and for players it’s a relatively short term one. I think the FOs understand that. It was naive of Kap to assume that Baalke would keep the veterans. Don’t know if Baalke lied to his face or not. I’m sure he’s now learned that, in general, that’s not the way it works.

            2. Do you really believe that contracts in the NFL only count when the team benefits? Colin’s contract calls for a guarantee of $11.9M if he can’t pass his physical. That’s an obligation that the 49ers can’t avoid without making themselves look like trash. Al Davis did it several times but usually with coaches.

If Kaepernick can play he will play. If he can’t play, that $11.9M invested will give him a foundation that’s a lot better than anyone who’s willing to spend time here reading and commenting on football.

Stanford’s starting center just notified Stanford that he would not use his fourth year of eligibility in football because he wants to pursue other options. He has those other options because he’s graduating from Stanford this year. Colin has other options too if he can’t pass his physical on April 1.

NFL people know that the 49ers conned Colin, and anyone who thinks his talent has been misused will make him an offer. There may be an offset for Colin but he will make at least $11.9M if as you say he sticks it to the 49ers.

I’m more interested in why we don’t know who the next DC is going to be.

              1. HT prime is blinded by his hate for CK. The 49ers signed the contract with him so I agree with you. He got hurt playing for them behind the awful line TB assembled. I don’t see a conspiracy or certainly hypocrisy as Prime claims. You don’t have surgery on stuff that isin’t injured. Seems like having the surgery early helps him be ready for where ever his next stop is whether with another team or this one. Nobody wants an injured QB. He needs to be in good health to get another job. There’s no holding the 49ers hostage to something they signed off on.

              2. It’s not a hate. As you all seen the past 2 years, he is not a good QB. He has not gotten any better in 2 years.
Now you all want to put it on Tomsula or the oline or Geep. That’s fine. Let’s go into the year thinking this guy can resurrect under Kelly. And then once again you guys will be calling for Gabbert or the new draft pick.
Time will tell. But I’ve seen enough of him. No offense, no coach can teach or scheme what he lacks.

              3. Prime, stop with the straw man stuff. No one said anything about JT being responsible for Kap’s bad play. Instead of just owning up to assuming Kap is automatically a hypocrite you start throwing crap around. Gabbert sucks too. This isn’t about his ability it was about you saying he’s holding the team hostage to a contract they agreed to with him.

              4. HT who do you think is up next for DC since Vrabel turned down the offer? I don’t really have any ideas.

            3. Why no DC? We’re either fools and simply missed the announcement, or the 9ers are dealing with some twists they hadn’t anticipated.

            4. I like Mike Vrabel. But I agree Wilson, Gabbert is terrible too. I want a new QB unit altogether. But financially and football wise, to me, no brainer, get rid of that salary and that attitude, and that awful wind up.

              Don’t do it Chip!

          2. You’re mixing your transactions.

If you pay him an injury settlement that would make him a FA and those must be negotiated. Kap has all the power in those negotiations. How he wields that power is up to him.

If they want to trade him they could always offer to pay whatever percentage of his salary it would take to move him, but that would be a negotiation with the other GM not Kap. Kap would still get his full pay.

            1. OK. But the dead money hit for Kap is $7.4 million. All you need to do is find someone to take him for around 5 million or so. A win-win for everyone. If Kap wants out, it does him no good to seek vengeance since his career is relatively short and since his drive to succeed would trump vengeance, imo. I don’t think he would potentially want to become another RG3.

              1. This speculation is all moot, because Kaep will thrive in a Chip Kelly situation. Chip relishes challenges. Chip will rehabilitate Kaep because then he will be declared a genius, and if he can triumph over the NFC West, his name will become legend.
Chip said he was a big fan of Kaep, and said that obviously, Kaep is extremely talented. I did not want Shanahan because of what he did to RGIII, and what he wanted to do to Kaep, too.
Chip is the key, and he will do well no matter what DC is chosen. Chip will do well because he has designed defenses to stop his offenses.
I hope Chip does not have too big an ego to allow Tomsula to return as DC. Jed is paying him anyways, JT would love to be back coaching. He would have the entire locker room. He could provide continuity. Tomsula was the D line coach for all those playoff teams under JH.
Tomsula, a victim of the Peter Principle, would settle back down to his level of competence. It would be a good way for Jed to atone for his classless act of cutting him through rumors. It would stick it to Baalke.
If everyone acted like grownups, it could work.

    2. Kaep was stabbed in the back with all those leaks, with reneging on all those promises to re-sign veteran talent, yet sitting on 13 mil ALL SEASON.
Kaep was smart to schedule the surgery when he did because that guaranteed him his money because they cannot cut him.
Now it is time for all the boys to grow up, stop acting like brats and become more professional. Do it for the team. Put aside their petty tantrums and low blows, and deal with the situation like grown men.

      1. Seb

Kaep wqas NOT stabbed in the back…you’ve been carrying around that same silly scenario with no proof other than your circumstantial evidence up at least 3 times a week….It would be much more kind just to read over all of his flaws, and admit that trading or cuttintg him would be the best thing for the forty niners…OUR forty niners…

        1. Typical Oregon trying to use the word ‘our’ as a manipulation tactic. Do you remember Smith caddying for Harbaugh, signing a team-friendly deal and then being benched and traded while being constrained to that team-friendly deal? Smith was the fall guy for the teams woes before Harbaugh got there. When he was asked about coming back to the 49ers in 2011, Smith looked at reporters and asked, “Are you serious?” Your hatred for CK blinds rational thoughts from entering your mind when discussing him. It got old a long time ago.

        2. I am sorry, Oregon, if you think that the leak of his study times was not a stab in the back. From everything I read, Kaep was peeved, and prompted Baalke to have a long conversation with him.

  12. Accuracy, very important in a Chip Kelly led offense.

Day set four career records at UNH, including completion percentage and touchdowns.[3]

  13. Isn’t Cole the same guy who said the 49ers were going to interview Shaw only to have that shot down almost immediately?

    image: http://walterfootball.com/college/NotreDame_logo.gif

Bold prediction: Chip Kelly will start Blaine Gabbert next year, citing how his short-range accuracy makes him a great fit for his offense. This may sound crazy, but Kelly is completely incompetent and doesn’t understand NFL concepts.

If I’m right, Kelly will need someone to protect his cowardly quarterback. San Francisco’s offensive line took a big hit when Anthony Davis retired last offseason. Ronnie Stanley could start at right tackle immediately and ultimately move to the blind side once Joe Staley retires.

    1. I remember walter.com’s harsh predictions last year. Didn’t we come up with the the theory it’s Grant writings in disguise.?

  15. •Colin Kaepernick had 5 games this season without a passing touchdown that’s partially why he got benched for Blaine Gabbert. It’s time for a new quarterback with a new regime coming into San Francisco to replace Jim Tomsula after one season.

Paxton Lynch threw 7 touchdowns in one half against SMU. Lynch finished his 2015 season with 3,778 passing yards, 28 passing touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. The 6-7 245 lb Lynch completed 69 percent of his passes. Lynch may display the arm strength and accuracy that scouts look for, but he’s not always consistent with his accuracy and his delivery sucks.

Lynch has the best short accuracy of any quarterback in the draft. His medium passing game accuracy isn’t as good as Goff’s, but it’s not bad. Lynch has awful deep ball accuracy and that explains his shaky delivery and inconsistent accuracy.

  16. Assuming Kap has not voided the contract clause regarding passing a physical by using a doctor who may not have been approved by the team, the worst that happens is he is given a chance to prove he is an NFL starting QB. His cap number is not that crazy for a QB and the Niners should still have enough cap room to sign 1 or 2 quality free agents, a couple of mid grade FA’s and sign their draft class.
If Kap can pass for 4,000 yards, 12+ TD’s (plus run for another 4-5) and throw less than 8 picks then the Niners have made a pretty good deal. If he can’t, and I have serious doubts he can, then he will be gone and his NFL career will be as a backup.
I don’t mind giving him one last chance to show he can read a defense, make quick decisions and throw the ball accurately, I just don’t think the Niners should assume he will and should plan accordingly.

  17. Regardless,of what happen on Apil 1st…Kaep will get paid! I read that management were upset be cause of his injuries. So they will be out $17mil if they keep him or cut him.

    1. Ruben, where in the world of reality did you come up with $17M for Colin regardless of what takes place?

    1. Given he had an arrest for domestic assault (though charges later dropped) and was suspended by the team a few times I doubt Kelly or Baalke will be interested.

        1. Dateline San Jose, 23 March 2018. Leonte Carroo, a member of the San Francisco 49ers, was arrested on domestic battery charges in what authorities are calling….

  18. Check out what Walter’s Football had to say as part of their prediction that the 9ers would pick Stanley with the 7th pick.

“San Francisco 49ers: Ronnie Stanley, OT, Notre Dame

Bold prediction: Chip Kelly will start Blaine Gabbert next year, citing how his short-range accuracy makes him a great fit for his offense. This may sound crazy, but Kelly is completely incompetent and doesn’t understand NFL concepts.

If I’m right, Kelly will need someone to protect his cowardly quarterback. San Francisco’s offensive line took a big hit when Anthony Davis retired last offseason. Ronnie Stanley could start at right tackle immediately and ultimately move to the blind side once Joe Staley retires.

  19. it’s funny how they didn’t make any changes to Oline until Gabbert got behind center,Kaepernick was going to fail this year because he was setup to fail who could win with Mario as their coach. He also was failed by the lack of run game,Hydes injuries killed this team, they said all offseason that they were going to be a run 1st offense and when Hyde got hurt it made them a pass 1st offense.

    1. Michael, I wondered about this too. I am not suggesting any kind of conspiracy but it looks like Tomsula’s yes man approach with Baalke about who plays really hurt the team in this area. Specifically with Tiller. From reports both JT and TB said TB didn’t see him as a viable option on the 46 even though the coaching staff were lobbying for him to play. Seems like TB over stepped his role as GM there and the same with Brown over Pears at RT. I don’t think they were trying to get CK hurt but rather it’s a result of the dysfunction in the 49ers FO and GM showing up on the field. Doesn’t seem like Chip will yield to this kind of interference.

  20. When you guys start doing your mocks, remember its a ‘system’ on offense, the player has to fit in the system.

  21. No way in hell does Baalke choose a WR with the 7th pick. If it is not a O lineman, the most probable choice would be Ezekiel Elliot. If Baalke chose a WR, the WR would probably blow an achilles in TC.
