Davis on McNabb: ‘That would be outstanding’

If Mike Shanahan doesn’t want Donovan McNabb, a certain tight end will gladly take him.

Vernon Davis, making a guest appearance, on the T.Ocho Show tonight (7:30 p.m., Versus), sounds like he’d enthusiastically welcome the embattled quarterback to San Francisco.

Davis was asked about McNabb by Terrell Owens, who teamed with McNabb for two touchdown- and turbulent-filled years in Philadelphia. (Click here for video).

“Oh, man, I’d love to catch some passes from Donovan McNabb,” Davis said. “I saw some of the things he did with you when you were playing with him and he did a great job getting you the ball. That would be tremendous. Whoever they bring in, really. But having Donovan McNabb — that would be outstanding.”

McNabb, 34, ended a disastrous debut season in Washington behind Rex Grossman and John Beck on the depth chart and behind Shaun Hill and Ryan Fitzpatrick in the NFL’s passer ratings.

But Davis’ excitement over the thought of teaming with the six-time Pro Bowler is understandable. During Davis’ five seasons in San Francisco, the Niners starting quarterbacks have included Hill, Alex Smith, Troy Smith, J.T. O’Sullivan, Trent Dilfer and Chris Weinke.

The Redskins will owe McNabb a $10 million roster bonus the day after the 2011 regular-season opener. As a result, he will likely be traded or released in the offseason after falling out of favor with Shanahan.

General manager Trent Baalke had it written into his contract that he would have full control of the 53-man roster. No word on whether there is a clause allowing the starting tight end to pick the quarterback.
