Day 1, practice 2: Smith turns jeers to cheers

Quarterback Alex Smith heard cheers from the crowd in the 49ers’ afternoon practice, as he looked particularly sharp in the team’s 11-on-11 drills.

Smith and wide receiver Brandon Jones hooked up on two beautiful deep passes. Jones went over Allen Rossum to catch the first one. On the second, Smith hit Jones in stride some 40 yards down the field on a flea-flicker to beat the coverage of Nate Clements for a TD.

The offense was a little sharper in the afternoon, as Shaun Hill completed 10 of 11 passes (mostly short throws), while Smith connected on 7 of 8 attempts.

Rookie quarterback Nate Davis continues to just grab the ball and throw it. He does not throw with the laces, but he still gets a lot of zip on the ball. He hit Delanie Walker on a deep seam route. Then, his pass for Maurice Price was intercepted by Marcus Hudson.

Parys Haralson (right hip flexor) sat out the afternoon practice. Ahmad Brooks took his spot at outside linebacker with the first-team defense.

Cornerback Tarell Brown sat out with a left toe sprain. He is listed as day to day.

When the 49ers broke into special-teams work, Rossum Arnaz Battle, Nate Clements, Micheal Spurlock and Brandon Jones were back fielding punts.

With Moran Norris remaining away from the team for personal reasons, Michael Robinson is running as the first-team fullback. He made a nice grab against tight coverage from Dre’ Bly on a pass zipped in there by Shaun Hill.

Jason Hill has returned to action after missing most of the offseason with ankle and hamstring injuries. Hill caught an Smith pass on an “out” pattern in 11-on-11 work.sprain.

Almost forgot to mention . . . my tradition continued of wearing a University of Pacific shirt on the first day of training camp. It’s just not the same after training camp moved to the 49ers’ practice facility in Santa Clara. I still have fond memories of the hospitality we experienced from the folks of Stockton.
