Day 2, practice 3: QBs don’t test the wind

The windy was gusting on the 49ers’ practice field, and that made it difficult for the quarterbacks to get the ball down the field today.

The 49ers had just one practice session, and here’s a quick recap:

–Alex Smith opened with the first unit. (Shaun Hill went out with the first-team offense on Saturday.) In the 11-on-11 work, but QBs worked primarily underneath. Smith tried to hit Brandon Jones with a couple deep passes. One was broken up by good coverage from Nate Clements and Michael Lewis. On the other, Clements might have impeded Jones’ route with a subtle hold.

–Hill’s arm was hit once while throwing – and that’s a no-no. D-line coach Jim Tomsula reminded his players that the QB is not to be touched. Another time, Kentwan Balmer pushed the pocket and Hill nearly got swallowed by the mass of bodies. Somehow, he spun out of the congestion to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

–Both Smith and Hill completed 5 of 8 passes, while rookie Nate Davis was 1 of 2.

–Rookie running back Glen Coffee continues to work as Frank Gore’s backup, and undrafted rookie Kory Sheets saw some practice time, too. Sheets carried twice and caught a short pass from Hill. Sheets is getting more work than Thomas Clayton.

–Outside linebacker Parys Haralson (right hip flexor) sat out, and Ahmad Brooks took his spot. Brooks went over to work on pass-rush drills during the one-on-one session. Dre’ Bly stepped into right cornerback with Tarell Brown still out with a toe sprain. Both Haralson and Brown are listed as day-to-day.

–Fullback Moran Norris missed the first two days of practice due to personal reasons. He was spotted on the practice field today, walking off with Frank Gore. Norris is expected to take part in practice tomorrow.

–When the 49ers worked on kickoffs and kickoff return, Allen Rossum, Arnaz Battle and Micheal Spurlock worked handling kicks as the deep men.

–Through two days of practices, tight end Vernon Davis has caught seven passes in 11-on-11, while Brandon Jones and Michael Robinson have caught five apiece, while Gore has four receptions.

–Back at it tomorrow morning, as the 49ers hit the field at 8:30 a.m. The second practice begins at 4:20 p.m.
