Niners plenty active at the start of free agency

The 49ers have not been passive at the start of free agency, as several fairly significant things are in the works, including a visit from Bengals free-agent DE Justin Smith tomorrow (Friday). He has not agreed to terms with anyone, and he also is reportedly making a trip to meet with the Vikings.

There is word that the 49ers have agreed to terms with QB J.T. O'Sullivan (Lions), LB Dontarrious Thomas (Vikings) and RB DeShaun Foster (recently cut by the Panthers). Terms of these deals are not known.

Things are getting fast and furious.

The 49ers' signing of Thomas should put an end to any discussion about the club pursuing high-priced Bears LB Lance Briggs. Thomas is listed at 6-2, 241 pounds. He would probably play the position previously occupied by Derek Smith. (But I don't know that for sure.)

Here's a quote about Thomas from the Mel Kiper Jr. Free Agent Data Sheet: "This former second-round pick hasn't been able to materialize into the type of starter they were hoping for coming out of Auburn, but he has proven to be a pretty solid backup and a good special teamer."

* * *

This is what else I've learned . . .

--The 49ers are not in the running to sign OLB Calvin Pace or WR Bernard Berrian (or Briggs), but they are going after WR Isaac Bruce, whom the Rams released on Thursday. Pace and Berrian are probably getting big deals elsewhere. If Bruce's asking price is right, I'd expect him to sign with the 49ers to reunite with Mike Martz.

--It sure looks as if the Raiders are going to land 49ers OT Kwame Harris with a big deal, somewhere in the neighborhood of $5.5 million annually for five years with $10 million to sign. (I just checked out profootballtalk.com, and they had the same information about Harris. However, his agent, Ryan Tollner, contacted the Web site to inform them that the deal has not been completed.)

--Just because Smith is visiting does not mean he's going to be signing . . . though it's certainly puts the 49ers in a good position. It is possible his price might rise to the point past where the 49ers are willing to go.

* * *

ESPN.com has the terms from some of those 49ers deals. As previously noted, the 49ers have also struck a deal with return specialist Allen Rossum.

The deals according to ESPN are: Foster two years, $1.8 million; O'Sullivan one year at the league minimum, plus $40,000 to sign; and Thomas two years.

* * *

O'Sullivan is a good pickup as the No. 3 QB (at worst) for his familiarity with Martz's offense, having spent last season with the Lions. O'Sullivan completed 13 of 26 passes for 148 yards with one TD and two interceptions last year. He played collegiately at UC Davis.

* * *

Also, it's pretty clear that Maurice Hicks will not be returning to the 49ers after the signing of Foster.

* * *

Haven't heard much about DE Marques Douglas. If he is not snapped up early in free agency when teams have a lot of money, he could end up back with the 49ers.

* * *

If you're wondering what the 49ers are thinking about at WR, here's a great quote from GM Scot McCloughan from his conference call with reporters at noon on Thursday:

Q: Are there plans to add a WR in free agency?

A: "We would love to. The market is not really deep in terms of impact type players, what you call number one receivers. I think that's a position you always try to address and we have. Maybe we haven't got as much value out of it as we would like, but we will continue to go after it. I think that's a position you can draft, especially nowadays the way the offenses are in college, highly productive guys are catching a lot of balls. We would love to do it with free agency. Again free agency is where you are going to overspend. There are certain positions where you overspend more, and those are the positions you need to draft those players. Hopefully we get somebody in free agency, if not the draft is where we will get those wide receivers."

Q: Are you saying WR is a position where teams typically overspend?

A: "Yes. I think with the skill positions in free agency, that's where you want to draft those guys - the corners, the pass rushers, the offensive tackles. To be a good team, and a consistent team over time, you have to draft those positions because then you get the bang for the buck. In free agency you overspend no matter what, but certain positions you really overspend."

* * *

This has been a crazy night. My cell phone was fully charged this evening. Now, it's running on fumes. I don't think there's much left to report this evening. The big development to watch tomorrow will involve Justin Smith.

Will he leave Santa Clara without a contract? Last year, Nate Clements and Michael Lewis were first-day visitors and both of them signed before leaving town.

Comment: hate to lose Smiley. Parcells knows what he is doing. Smiley just didn't kiss McNolan's posterior. He will be a starter in Miami. Kwame is a journeyman and the Raiders paid him a bundle. I am not sure he shouldn't be a guard anyway. Tough to evaluate talent on the niners o-Line because teamwork is more important and they don't play as a team well. I have my doubts about Kwamee helping the Raiders.

Comment: We need to draft some WRs vs over-paying for mediocre ones. No one out there worth breaking the bank on. Also, people are underestimating Mad Man Martz. Himself alone is a huge upgrade. LOL at Mike in SF #2's comments - My thoughts exactly.

Posted By: Santa Clara 49ers (29/02/2008 8:43:27 AM)
Comment: My point being that: Berrian being young, fast and putting up decent numbers, and young Bryant Johnson is only a #3 probably because he's behind the Dynamic Duo, are BOTH more "proven" than any of our duds... (and let's not get into DJax.) Javon Walker we could definitely take a flyer on, and we should be bringing back Antonio Bryant for Martz' offense.

Comment: You nailed it Oneniner. He is overrated and not worth the money. BTW - to all the fake fans on this blog that have already hit the panic button only 8 hours into free agency: Please please become a Raider fan because you are acting like one. Its pathetic to judge/repond to our moves up to this point.

Comment: Miami to break the bank for Calvin Pace. This is why McNolan is smart - do NOT over pay for overrated players. This guy has never had a double digit sack year, in fact his best year was 2007 with 6.5 sacks: According to Alex Marvex of FOXSports.com, the Fins could be signing Cardinals linebacker Calvin Pace to "the same kind of mega-deal" that was received a year ago by Porter and by Adalius Thomas of the Patriots.

Comment: so Timmy, Now that you have seen all our moves, who do you think is running the show? McClaughlin or Nolin? You have made a point to let everyone know that McClaughlin has done nothing to show that he's able to run the show here. You were wrong and it's time to admit it. I respect what you do, love your work and don't let a day go by without checking your stuff out...at least 5 times.

Javon Walker (injury riddled of late), Bernard Berrian (going to the Vikings, never was a solid #1), Bryan Johnson (AZ's #3), Stallworth (NE's #3 or 4), Henderson (N.O.'s #3 or 4)...What is PROVEN about #3 WR's other then they couldnt be their old teams #1's? Paying a #3 like he's a #1 doesnt make sense.

Comment: To all you guys who are saying "don't worry, we'll go draft a #1 WR", are you kidding me???!! I say tell me when was the last time and more importantly HOW MANY #1 wr's the 49ers have drafted in the last decade. People just don't get that we are cursed when it comes to taking ANY wr in any round with the obvious exceptions of Rice and Owens since our dynasty. Stokes, Woods, Lloyd, Williams, etc, etc, the list is long of failed wr draftees... we need to realize this and actually go after PROVEN guys especially when you have the kind of QB problems that we have. It's not rocket science.

Comment: Matt, Any update on Faneca??? A lot of internet reports have the 49ers going after him hard. This is a pleasant surprise. After losing Harris and Smiley, and potentially Jennings I think this would be a great pickup. Not crazy about the WR's at this point. Bruce may have a little left but not much and the only one I would really like to see at this point is Bryant Johnson.

Comment: Wow! What a bunch of vampires! I go to bed last night & got a good nights sleep then wake up to have my 1st cup of coffee this morning & all hell breaks loose on Matt's blog! Okay, so first of all most of you guys who are bashing the 49ers for not being more active since 12:01 this morning are HILARIOUS! There's a reason why you're at your laptop blogging & not at the 49ers HQ working the phones... As Jim Mora Sr eloquently said to the press one day "You guys don't know what we're trying to do here...You think you know... but you don't...And you never will!" GH in particular regarding Justin Smith, the difference between Pace & Smith is simple. Smith is not 1 dimensional like Pace who is just an OLB pass rusher (we already more than enough of those) where Smith is both a pass rusher & a stout point of attack D-lineman. Plus Smith never has to leave the field wether it's a 3-4 or a 4-3 defense. That's called getting "Bang for your Buck" this is a NO-BRAINER people. My perdictions is once Smith gets here he never gets back on a plane to Minnesota. As for getting players like O'Sullivan & Bruce, just like other people have stated this is a good move in order to get our QB's & WR's more aclimated to Martz's offense quicker plain & simple. Yes Bruce is getting older but the intention is for 1 year & I'll take him anyday over D-Jax. So you 49er basher's need to WAKE-UP!

Posted By: Marc - NJ49er (29/02/2008 7:59:58 AM)
Comment: Devery Henderson would make an excellent option Dirk2, no problem for me either, if the price is right. I happen to think Martz is probably drooling over Jordy Nelson or Andre Caldwell anyway. I'd even be happy to see Lavelle Hawkins or Jerome Simpson. It's certainly an area we need to address, should be fun to watch all the moves unfold in the coming days. But I'm still holding firm for pass rushers and QB protection 1st.

Comment: EastCoast- At this point, I'm liking what McCloughan has done. I'll trust his decisions until proven otherwise. Having said that, I'd like to have Smith.

Posted By: NinerKing (29/02/2008 7:56:42 AM)
Comment: I agree with Mike. Paying Top 5 money for a mid-range WR doesnt make sense. I believe it was either Tim Ryan or Randy Cross who said it best "It'll be interesting to see who jumps into the pot of paying someone elses #2 or 3 to be a #1 when free agency opens up." Drafting a TRUE #1 makes more sense.

Posted By: Dirk 2 (29/02/2008 7:38:42 AM)
Comment: I still think we should go after Devery Henderson. I think he would be a good fit with us. He's young and has already established himself as a solid receiver.

Posted By: EastCoastNiner (29/02/2008 7:35:54 AM)
Comment: Berger- I have said that Smith is too small to play 3-4 RDE, but considering Douglas played well there and he is only 6'2'' 285, I wouldn't really worry about it. Smith is a better player than Douglas and maybe he could add some weight to his 6'4'' 275 pound frame. If we don't get Smith, I am not really sure who we could get. Are you okay with getting no one else in free agency?

Posted By: Marc - NJ49er (29/02/2008 7:35:09 AM)
Comment: Yes Berger, I and a few other folks here, have noticed his name on the FA board and love his motor as well. We could do very well for ourselves by adding (CB) Drayton Florence also, and (OT) Shane Olivea too perhaps? I have faith in Scot's plan, and if we follow the early signings as transition trainers for Martz, Florence could benefit from his prior association with Manusky. I see us adding another young CB in the Draft anyway, so we shall see?

Posted By: Berger (29/02/2008 7:31:19 AM)
Comment: Somebody just posted on Lynch's site that Justin Smith ran a 4.55 to 4.65 when he was drafted. That would probably make this guy a monster as an Elephant. Maybe get Smith for Elephant and Spicer for RDE?

Posted By: Mike (29/02/2008 7:26:42 AM)
Comment: You guys need to calm down on the reciever talk, Berrian is a number 2 reciever who is going to get top 5 reciever money, thats a waste. jackson bruce and battle would thrive in a martz offense that relies on quick cuts and good routes ( obviousley I would rather have a better #1 that jackson but that guy is not out there so stick with who we traded for). Put the money into the defense and OL.

Posted By: Berger (29/02/2008 7:07:57 AM)
Comment: Marc- You mentioned Travis LeBoy. I like his mig time motor and he seems to create a lot of problems for offenses. Is it because he plays on the same line as Haynesworth? He is definately an itrersting possibility.

Posted By: Berger (29/02/2008 7:02:20 AM)
Comment: EastCoast-I'd like to have Smith, but I'm not sure about being too worried if we don't sign him. He is a bit of a tweener. Now if it is true that he runs a 4.55 40, like somebody posted on this site, I would want to put him at Elephant and would very much to sign him. I would doubt he is that fast. It really all depends on how much we have to spend on him and what he can actually do for us. If we do sign him I am going to be very interested on how McNolan plan to use him.

Comment: Matt, hearing anything on the Niners interest in Bryant Johnson of Arizona?

Posted By: oneniner (29/02/2008 6:55:48 AM)
Comment: Bad newz - Justin Smith played for current Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier in Cincinnati.

Posted By: Marc - NJ49er (29/02/2008 6:52:26 AM)
Comment: Draft pool is LOADED with LBs, and if Justin Smith and Calvin Pace have Brinks trucks backed in their driveways Scot won't be foolish and overspend. If a FA truly wants to play for us, the money just needs to be fair. How sweet was our deal with Soap now in comparison to Kelly in Oakland? Once a team raises the ceiling, a money hungry Agent ups the bidding. We've recouped money on Smiley and Harris, the guys we signed are patch guys, and with J.T. and possibly Bruce, they will simply provide excellent transition leadership for Martz's offense. Guys like Antwan Odom and Travis LaBoy could factor, we are in the infancy stages of FA, testing the water and tinkering with our plan. We were 5-11, we've got a lot of issues to address. We need to be mindful of the budget to insure long term health and it looks like that's exactly what Scot is doing.

Posted By: illini49er (29/02/2008 6:33:19 AM)
Comment: Any news on WR's Bryant Johnson,Devery Henderson or Donte Stallworth? They are my choices for FA of the WR's. Being in Illinois, I've watched Berrian alot, he is a good receiver, but he is simply not worth the money that people are going to throw his way. The other three are good receivers, who would upgrade the position and will not cost nearly as much. The draft is also deep at WR into the 3rd and 4th rounds, there is no need to overpay for Berrian.

Posted By: EastCoastNiner (29/02/2008 6:05:11 AM)
Comment: Berger- He does seem like a prime target, but at this point, I think the Niners are set with Brandon Moore/Donterrius Thomas taking over the TED LB spot. Maybe throw in a 5th rounder for depth. The real question is what do we do if Smith leaves town today without a contract. That would give us Allen Rossum, Deshaun Foster, Donterrius Thomas and J.T. O'Sullivan as the Niners free agent aquisitions. They seem to have cooled on Calvin Pace and Lance Briggs. Faneca is going to the Jets. Berrian was never on the radar. If Smith leaves to go to Minnesota, the Niners could be in trouble.

Posted By: Berger (29/02/2008 5:59:06 AM)
Comment: Two thoughts. Is is possible that the reason Brandon Moore is not playing the Ted is because he was really a Mike and never really learned his Ted assignments and Smith did? Is ist possible 2006 was such a great year because he was playing the Mike? If this is true, it reminds me a bit of Sopoaga and maybe this is his year to shine? Matt, any Matt wisdom to this possible theory? Second, it seems to me the LB we should be going after if it is a Ted you want is Kawika Mitchell. I really don't know, I'm just saying because in the Super Bowl he was big and physical. Anybody have any knowledge on Mitchell?

Comment: With the Raiders giving Tommy Kelly that massive contract, I have to say this:I pity the teams that want to try and sign Albert Haynesworth next year. It's not enough that the Raiders screw their own team up. Aparantly they're looking to make life complicated for the rest of us, too. Thanks a lot, Al.

Posted By: NewOwnership (29/02/2008 12:56:42 AM)
Comment: The fact that it looks like the 49ers are looking only at Bruce in regards to WR is discerning as a fan. Martz cant work miracles with a less than stellar overall offense. It goes to show than McNolan is so concerned with the defense as the main priority when the offense needs more help. Sure they added a few Off FA but none that can improve the team for next year. If they don't add a legitimate WR (Stallworth, Berrian, J. Walker) this offense can expect to fare much better than last year. I agree with Ed in Irvine in regards to Steve Young's assessment of the 49ers. I wish they would consider selling the team to Young & Jones's people or else we will be like the Chicago Cubs and go on a century long drought without winning the Super Bowl.

Posted By: Ed in Irvine (29/02/2008 12:48:27 AM)
Comment: Hi Matt. I think this is very important. I work for a nonprofit here in Orange County and we just had Steve Young as our Guest Speaker. I spent a few minutes talking to him about what was the main problems with the Niners and how to correct it. He bluntly told me that the "Main Issue with the Niners is the Owner. We are the Cardinals (reffering to the Cardinals of the 90's)." I thought that was a pretty bold statement. But coming from him, that meant a lot. He told me to hang in there and good luck. What are your thoughts?

Posted By: GH (29/02/2008 12:41:52 AM)
Comment: Randy - That IMO would be a much better route and your right probably cheaper. And just like Joe mentioned this draft has some good D-Linemen. People don't realize that his high sack totals are due to him playing in a 4-3 and that's what DE's do in a 4-3, pass rush. In a 3-4 they are typically much bigger and used to take on blocks. I really liked Pace th best for our scheme and get either Berrian or even Johnson for our WR.

Posted By: Randy in Santa Rosa (29/02/2008 12:33:48 AM)
Comment: GH - Maybe we can skip on J. Smith, get a bargain on Douglas, sign C. Pace (excelled his 1st year last year in the 3-4) to a reasonable contract... That would help the pass rush, especially with Manny coming back on the other side.. Probably would be cheaper than signing Smith, but either way I'll be happy as long as the price makes sense.

Posted By: Joe (29/02/2008 12:33:47 AM)
Comment: Seeing that we are out of the race for Berrian upsets me. He is prototypical receiver for Martz's system and would be well worth the money. This draft is too deep at the defensive line to throw money around at Smith who doesn't even fit the 3-4. Save money, re-sign douglas and move Soap over to LDE and do what McCloughan has been preaching for 3 years "SUPPLEMENT THROUGH FREE AGENCY AND BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT".

Posted By: GH (29/02/2008 12:23:56 AM)
Comment: I agree Randy - I am trying to stay optimistic here but I don't want to overspend on Smith. He has played in a 4-3 his whole career and now is asked to switch to a 3-4. He is 29 with 8 years under his belt and usually in a 3-4 an OLB is used to help better a good pass rush. Again I am not as high as everyone else on him, at least for the money we are probably going to spend, but we will see I guess

Posted By: PD (29/02/2008 12:23:14 AM)
Comment: Matt - Awesome job with the reports. I know we can always count on you for reliable information. If we can pick up J.Smith, I think that would be huge for us. Having Douglas return would be fantastic as well - he had a number of impact plays last year that resulted in negative yardage for the opposing offense.

Comment: "The Vikings and 49ers battled it out to convince Bengals defensive end Justin Smith, but Smith informed the 49ers he will make San Francisco his first stop." THIS IS VERY GOOD NEWS if this is true. ALSO, the Draft is deep with linemen. WE ALL KNOW LINE PLAY can make a bunch of experienced old receivers shine.

Last time I checked my geography, Minnesota was in between Cincy and San Francisco, and he's skipping right past them to see the Niners. Sounds like someone has a preference, doesn't it?

Comment: Justin Smith, meanwhile, is scheduled to visit the Vikings and the 49ers tomorrow. Comment: Isaac Bruce LOL, would have loved that move 8-9 years ago, we should see if Chris Carter wants to come out of retirement. Why aren't we going after Shaun Rogers or Marcus Stroud, the teams that are said to be about to trade for him are be rumored to give up a 3rd rounder which is what they took Brandon Williams with 3 years ago who is no longer on the team, let's take a NT that's a proven player and then move Sopoaga to DE. Good job extending the worst first pick of all time Alex "the cowardly lion" Smith way to show players that playing like a bum gets u rewarded. Please tell me that there is some kind of benefit to the niners cap situation by making the move they made with Smith because not even the niners can be that dumb. I think the niners should make a play at B Berrian unless he's asking to get paid like a Moss, Chad Johnson or Terrell Owens. Whether it is free agency or via the draft the niners need a wr that can come in and immediately make plays and be consistent.

Comment: DH- IMO we have plenty of money to spend and if we can add a solid to great player like Justin Smith (the guy got the Franchise tag for a reason last year) then we should definitely do so. I think it can be pretty difficult to get an impact lineman in the draft because it seems like you just never know what your getting... IMO we do not really need an impact LB at this time as one of our major needs.. I'm confident with Willis and Lawson, sure it would be good to have a pass rushing LB as well. I mean I get where you are coming from the team is pretty bad in a lot of spots so I mean I think they should just sign whatever good players they can and then hopefully come out with a solid draft. I don't know why they aren't making a more significant run at players like Pace, Berrian, Faneca.. maybe they just feel they aren't worth the price. Oh well, wait and see I guess.

Comment: Matt, have you heard anything about the Alan Faneca rumors going around at FOXSports.com? They say the 49ers are in a "bidding war" with the Jets and Rams. Also, is it confirmed that Justin Smith is visiting Santa Clara first? I've read that the Vikings will visit with him before the Niners do. Last question, could you see the team signing both Smith and Marques Douglas, and move Sopoaga inside? Thanks and keep up the great work!

Posted By: GH (28/02/2008 11:40:30 PM)
Comment: EMAC - I hear you about our D-Line, but IMO putting a bunch or our FA money into that particular position does not seem like a great move. That is a spot you can address through the draft and by coaching guys up, much harder to get an impact LB or WR or O-Lineman IMO.

Comment: I'll retract the Nolan gone if no real WR if Martz and find a way to simplify and utilize VD as something other than a blocker. I'd use him as a receiver personally and let somebody else do the blocking. VD's your best potential receiver on the field.

Comment: Are you all talking about the same DeShaun Foster as the one who was just cut by CAR?? That guy absolutely sucks, I am not sure what football world you all have been living in. So far we have acquired mostly a bunch of older, under performing back up's that could not find a roster spot with most teams.

Posted By: WurdNinerLife (28/02/2008 11:34:37 PM)
Comment: I agree with Niner4Life. No sense to shell out big money for an average D-Lineman. I'm all for holding out on Allen next year. Don't bring Douglas back. He doesn't add much to the D-Line

Posted By: Montana1 (28/02/2008 11:34:25 PM)

Posted By: EMAC (28/02/2008 11:34:11 PM)
Comment: GH.. I think people are interested in Justin Smith because incase you did not notice our defensive line was atrocious last season. Sure Smith had only 2 sacks last year but he also had 78 tackles and it was a down year for him. Look at some of his sack numbers from previous years... 7.5, 6, 8 and the guy plays hard every down and never quits.. seems like a good fit to me. We definately need help at WR and oline sure.. but Smith is definately at a spot in which we need help.

Posted By: Dirk Diggler (28/02/2008 11:33:06 PM)
Comment: Here is my analysis of the recent FA additions: DeSaun Foster - Nice signing. He provides the lightnig and Gore provides the thunder. He should be an upgrade over Hicks Allen Rossum - Nothing special. He will at least give us some hope of returning the ball past the 20. J.T. O'Sullivan - I think he was just signed to give Alex and Shaun a better vantage point of Martz's offensive scheme. Dontarrious Thomas - Really puzzling to me. I thought Brandon Moore was going to get the nod now with Smith gone, but this doesn't look good for him. I think we will decide not to sign a big named WR. I think Faneca and another big name come over.

Posted By: Wiggum (28/02/2008 11:32:59 PM)
Comment: I think there should be a little more buzz around the Foster signing. We got him at a good contract, and he'll be a big upgrade at back-up HB over Hicks. They guy has rushed over 800 yards the last 3 years.

Foster is the only one that looks decent from that list. JT Sullivan only b/c he played in Martz's O. Bruce? Haha our WR corps is going to be the laughing stock of the NFL. I was hoping maybe Berrian, sure Bruce is still a good player but he is still old and is not the long term type of player we are looking for. I'm hoping we can maybe pickup someone like a Jerry Porter, Stallworth, or maybe a DE from the Titans.. Laboy or Odom.

Comment: I hope we don't blow all our cash on a DL like Smith who may be good for 4-6 sacks a year.

Posted By: Montana1 (28/02/2008 10:56:51 PM)
Comment: Luis, Foster is a pretty damn nice backup to have in place of Hicks who was not improving.

Posted By: Mike (28/02/2008 10:56:00 PM)
Comment: Nolan thinks this is the 80ies and he's shopping for back ups! We need starters!

Posted By: SoCalFan34 (28/02/2008 10:55:17 PM)
Comment: I would rather have Matt say that we signed backups to reasonable contracts that reflect their worth rather than be the Raiders and overpay millions of guaranteed dollars for players that are mediocre at best

Posted By: Montana1 (28/02/2008 10:54:06 PM)
Comment: Why must we be the team with the worst, least proven QBing core in the NFL. I still have high hopes for Alex and Hill is a long shot to turn into something special but how about grabbing up a proven QB at the end of their career? (not Dilfer although he is a damn good man.)

Posted By: Paul (28/02/2008 10:52:58 PM)
Comment: Man,I'm so excited we signed back-ups. lol Wake me up when we actually sign someone actually good.

Posted By: oneniner (28/02/2008 10:52:45 PM)
Comment: Mcnolan is gonna come true....they are gonna get Smith.......i just wanna say its really nice to know my fellow niners are staying late up for this........guys we are gonna be back, we would be winners again....we are the niners...i have no doubt in my mind. go FAITHFUL, go niners.

Posted By: Luis (28/02/2008 10:52:36 PM)
Comment: Smith is the OK but the rest suck.

Posted By: Mike (28/02/2008 10:52:27 PM)
Comment: J Smith is the same player as Douglas. Why go with the same?? I say bring in Pace and see what the young guy can do??

Posted By: SoCalFan34 (28/02/2008 10:52:07 PM)
Comment: I like it...nickel and dime areas that need depth and spend the big bucks on Faneca and JSmith...I like it, hope it all works out and we get our stud OL and pass rushing/run stopping DL

Posted By: Chris (28/02/2008 10:51:56 PM)
Comment: Kewl! The 49ers thrill the NFL with those signings! A 5 Tackle LB, awesome. Pro Bowl numbers on this one. Who needs Smith, Pace or Faneca ?

Posted By: Kings/9ersfan (28/02/2008 10:51:07 PM)
Comment: Well since the other big potential signing isn't Briggs it could be Pace, Faneca, or Stallworth. Hopefully 2 of the 3. Lets bring Stallworth home back to NorCal.

Comment: Yeeees!!! Three backups!!!

Posted By: Montana1 (28/02/2008 10:49:06 PM)
Comment: I like Pace as well. Hey, maybe we can split him with with Vernon Davis when he's not playing D?

Posted By: nirav (28/02/2008 10:48:04 PM)
Comment: besides the games, these are the best times of the nfl

Posted By: Global Nomad (28/02/2008 10:46:29 PM)
Comment: why must we be the team that constantly tries to make "a pretty good backup and good special teamer" starters and hope we can make the playoffs?

Posted By: James (Santa Clara) (28/02/2008 10:45:45 PM)
Comment: Matt, what exactly are the bigger things going on here? We know of Smith, but you seem to be hinting at some other things, what are they?

Posted By: Mike (28/02/2008 10:43:52 PM)
Comment: I kinda like Calvin Pace over Justin Smith eventhough I like him as well. Pace can actually be the pass rusher that the Niners been looking for since Charles Haley.

Posted By: Montana1 (28/02/2008 10:43:35 PM)
Comment: Got WR?

Posted By: Robert (28/02/2008 10:41:21 PM)
Comment: What are the several significant things? Is Briggs coming to visit?

Posted By: Michael (28/02/2008 10:40:56 PM)
Comment: I did read in Matt's blog with McCloughan that his target area for free agency was OL, and DL so eventhough they lost Smiley, and get Faneca will be a coup. I can see an OL of either Staley at LT, Faneca at LG, Hiettmien at C, Bass at RG, and Snyder at RT. Or have Snyder at LG, Bass at C, and Faneca at RG, and draft an OT in the draft.

Posted By: Armchair T (28/02/2008 10:40:15 PM)
Comment: Hopefully, Smith visits Santa Clara first because either team will fight to make sure he doesn't leave the facility without a deal.

Posted By: Dan (28/02/2008 10:39:07 PM)
Comment: Matt, do you think the niners would rather over-spend on a few players of a position we need .... OR..... Rather hold back on some of the bigger names and make sure we get good value for the money with 2nd tier guys? It seems like players like J Smith and Berrian are going to command top dollar because of the lack of FAs on the market rather than their talent level. Both Berrian and J Smith play positions that we need, but I'm not sure they're going to be worth that amount of money it's going to take to sign those guys. Wouldn't we be better off paying less money for guys like Stallworth, Bryant Johnson, DJ Hacket, than Berrian who is asking $24m first 3 years?

Comment: Kwame Harris gone? Good riddance! I think we're currently in talks with Issac Bruce, and Orlando Pace.

Comment: Please tell me the other move is for Stallworth or Pace...

Posted By: Chad (28/02/2008 10:34:55 PM)
Comment: Well thanks matt.. I was just hoping it would be someone else other than Justin Smith.. The guy only had 2 sacks last season, nothing to be excited about.

Comment: Matt, great job! Any truth to the rumor that John Clayton of ESPN says, that the niners have inquired about Guard Alan Faneca?
