Niners trade Rumph for WR Jacobs

Cornerback Mike Rumph is no longer with the 49ers.

The 49ers on Monday announced a trade that sends Rumph to the Redskins for wide receiver Taylor Jacobs, a second-round draft pick in 2003. Jacobs caught 11 passes for 100 yards and no TDs last season for the Redskins in 15 games.

Rumph struggled in the exhibition opener Friday night, missing four tackles. He probably would not have won a roster spot with the 49ers this season.

"Mike's been a very good 49er," coach Mike Nolan said. "He's been good since we've been here both on and off the field. He's been extremely active in the community. He's done everything we've asked on the field."

Did you see those nifty patches the 49ers are wearing on their shoulder pads to commemorate the franchise's 60th season?

It's a nice touch to the team's uniform. But it also got me wondering about who's doing the math.

The logo reads: "60 Seasons," and it has "1946-2006" inscribed below.

There's only one problem with all this. This is actually the 49ers' 61st season.

With my investigative skills working overtime, I went to 49ers head PR guy Aaron Salkin to ask about this all-important issue. He checked with the marketing folks and reported back to me that the 49ers went through the NFL office before coming up with this logo. In fact, the Browns have a similar emblem for this season, too.

But the Browns don't declare 60 seasons or 60 years or a 60th anniversary. They just have the number "60." They leave the rest up to the imagination.

The 49ers, however, spell it out. This is the 60th season of 49ers football - even though it's really No. 61. Maybe this 61 deserves an asterisk, too.

This whole issue reminds me of the nasty emails I received three years ago when the 49ers finished with a 7-9 record. I stated that the 49ers finished two games under .500. Any reasonable person would agree that the 49ers won two fewer games than they lost. However, some dude who flouted his Mensa credentials told me I was wrong. He said the 49ers finished one game under .500 because if they'd won one of the games they lost, they would've been .500. Of course, that's true, but the idea is, how many games in a row would you have to win to get back to .500. After our email conversations -- in which trying to communicate with the guy was like talking to a parking meter -- I ended up feeling that the clown from Mensa wasn't so smart after all.

The 49ers signed first-year LB Sarth Benoit (Southern Connecticut State). He ended last season on the Lions practice squad.

OL Adam Snyder sat out practice to undergo an MRI on his left elbow, which he injured during practice yesterday. RB Maurice Hicks also had an MRI on an abdominal strain. No word yet on the results of those examinations. CB B.J. Tucker, LB T.J. Slaughter, CB Derrick Johnson, and C Ben Sobieski did not practice. RB Kevan Barlow returned to practice, as did DL Jerry DeLoach.

The 49ers held their morning padded practice on their new Sportexe artificial surface. The play of the day occurred when QB Trent Dilfer was intercepted as he tried to get a pass into Antonio Bryant across the middle. LB Jim Maxwell picked off the pass, then tossed a lateral to OLB Parys Haralson, who then lateraled to Keith Lewis, who took it down the right sideline for a touchdown. - QB Alex Smith continues to practice throwing on the move. But on one play, as he rolled right, CB Shawntae Spencer broke in front of Bryan Gilmore for the interception on the sideline. On another play from the 5-yard line, Smith rolled left and threw across his body to TE Vernon Davis, who made the catch at the goal line. - Nothing new here, but Smith and WR Antonio Bryant hooked up on a couple deep plays. In an 11-on-11 drill, Bryant got behind FS Mike Adams. On a 7-on-7 session, Bryant caught a 15-yard TD pass on a corner route, beating CB Sammy Davis and FS Mark Roman.

K Luis Berlanga looks like he might finally arrive in town from Mexico. He has been unable to get into the country because of paperwork delays. The 49ers would like for him to kick in at least one exhibition game.

The 49ers have only a special-teams practice scheduled for the afternoon. Coach Mike Nolan said the team will continue to have training-camp style practices tomorrow and Wednesday. But Friday, Saturday and Sunday, they'll proceed as if they're in the season. In other words, they'll spend three days doing a little game-planning for the Raiders just to give everybody a taste of how things will be conducted during the regular season.

Comment: Oh, please. ".500" in the sports pages is a term of art. It might have started with a mistaken understanding of the math, but folks lots of our current definitions and usages of words come from mistaken understandings of the original.

Comment: Ok, let's say we're counting from 1900-1960. Should be 60 seasons, right? Wrong. 1900 is season No. 1; 1901 is No. 2; 1902 is No. 3 .... and 1960 is No. 61. The only post that made sense so far was the one that suggested they're talking about the 60 seasons that have already been played. But if the patch says 1946-2006, then it is wrong. It should say 60th Anniversary, not 60 Seasons. Your first anniversary is the start of your second year of marriage. Get it?

Comment: RUMP AND PLUMMER WERE BOTH GARBAGE.. BAD PICKS. IM GLAD OUR DRAFT SELECTION HAS STARTED TO LOOK SHARPER. HOPEFULLY WE HAVE SOLID YEAR AND GET A NICE TOP 15 PICK. HOW ABOUT A PASS RUSHER? B.Y. IS STARTIN TO FADE. WE NEED TO KEEP THAT IN MIND.

Comment: how you goin to say 1946to 2006 is 61

Comment: Well, if you count the 2006 season, which has not been played yet, then yes, it is 61 seasons. But if you don't, they have played 60 full seasons. The 60th being last season, the 2005 campaign. Just count up the seasons here: http://www.49erswebzone.com/cgi-bin/scores/index.cgi

Comment: Three comments and an opinion. 1. Rumph was a first round bust and I'm glad to see us get something for him. Not sure what we got in this new WR and I'm not very confident in Spurriers professional personel evaluations. So I'm neutral on the whole thing. 2. If you count from year 2006 - 2006, how many years is that? That is 1 year. So 2006 - 2007 is 2 years... etc. Kinda like how we're in the 21st century in 2006. 3. Nothing funner than to spank a Mensa "person"... but they're right. They played 16 games that year, so a 7-9 record was missing it by 1... unless they went to the playoffs, which they didn't. Or another way to think of it... 7 out of 15: 1 more to hit .500. 4. Dallas sux. And TO too. That was Rumphs best play, you know the one I'm talkin about.

Comment: A 7-9 record does leave a team ONE game under .500. If they were still playing in an 18 game season, then you could say that the 49ers are "2 games under .500". However, you are wrong in asserting that at the end of a regular 16 game season that they ended up "2 games under .500"...it just ain't so.

Comment: Chinja, Count from 1946 to 1956 on your fingers. If you do it right you should count 11 seasons. Abstract to 2006 and you should see why it is 61 seasons.

Comment: Rumph never did anything for us and was never going to. We need more depth at wr. I fail to see the problem here.

Comment: Rumph is a hard hitter and he was rusty in the preseason game but it is preseason. THis trade is unjustified!!!!! Just like Jamie WInborn last year. We need more dbs than softies like Jacobs. WRs are a dime a dozen.

Comment: Huh? 1946-2006 equals 60 doesn't it? How does 1946 to 2006 come out to 61 seasons?

Comment: Just curious: after the Portis injury, is there much sentiment in the 49er camp for reducing the number of pre-season games? I can see where the 49ers (especially) might want a number of pre-season games to get the team fully up to speed, but the potential for serious injury is real.
