Niners sign free-agent guard Jeb Terry

The 49ers have signed free-agent guard Jeb Terry, who has played in 30 NFL games with one start. Terry was a fifth-round draft pick (No. 146 overall) of the Buccaneers in 2004 from North Carolina. He was cut during training camp last year and was out of the league.

Terry (6-5, 311) played 10 games for Tampa Bay in 2006. He played all 16 games in 2005, mostly on special teams. He played four games as a rookie. Terry turns 27 next month.

Terry was a fifth-round draft pick (No. 146 overall) of the Buccaneers in 2004 from North Carolina. So, hey, the 49ers might have lost a fifth-round draft pick yesterday, but they picked one up today.

Comment: here in tampa we enjoyed having him on the team. always played hard in special teams and in pre-season games. he did bust up his ankle on the last pregame last year. buc docs thought it would be way to much rehab to get him back and not worth holding a roster spot.......he is there now working out and i think he will make your team and stick around some time.

Comment: Hey, we got a cheap experienced Special teams player and an emergency backup in a positions where the least experience is needed. If he's just camp fodder, he's gone, so where is the problem? At least we draft two O-Liners and start one like Joe Staley!

Comment: Look Dad, his name is Jeb. I know Jed. Scot? What do you think? I'll call his agent John. Thank you Scot. That's too cool Dad!

Comment: Matt, it seems that we are getting screwed again. Good thing there are a few mitigating factors that will help the bottom line- getting better players on this team!

Comment: Hey guys--- make sure everyone of you calls Roger Goodell!!! I just placed a phone call to him and they took down my name and phone number. His number is 1-212-450-2027. I don't know if he will return my call or not but we can all call and at least keep bugging him until he gives us a better explanation!!

Comment: Come on guys are we that desperate to fuss like women on that "day of the month" over a 5th round draft pick. Seriously it's not a 4th,3rd or second round pick so het the hell over it. Damn goo teams don't cry over a late second day round pick SO GET THE HELL OVER IT!!!!!

Comment: hi Matt i really don't know what we can take for granted about our Oline. anything official about Allen retirement? and about Jennings status? in or out? is it up to Jonas, to Nolan? if he will not make the team wouldn't be better cut him before june?

Comment: Matt, What happened to the Active Player Search feature on the NFLPA website that listed the base salaries and years under contract for each player? I have been unable to access it for the past few days and it seems to have disappeared completely from the website. I remember you referencing the NFLPA Active Player Search in previous postings. Do you have any insight about this?

Comment: Okay ... while the "unreasonable" action of the Commissioner's office is apparent, the draft damage may not be that bad. First, I see, maybe 5 draft picks making the team. I also see the strong possibility of the Niners trading their number 1 pick for a 2 and an extra 3, which would make up for the loss. Why? Because at 29, Henne and Joe Flacco will be available for several teams and they will be anxious to trade up!! By trading, the Niners save money and get pretty much what they want in the second round, which are two of the following type players--OL, DL, WR, CB, or ILB. I do think it's important to draft "impact" players with the first 3 choices. And I also think, there's somewhat of a drop off in the DL/DE after the second round. So, what does it mean, playerwise? Laws, Nicks, Manningham, Caldwell, Lofton--2 of these in the second round, as availability dictates....

Comment: Terry's signing should put Jonas Jennings on notice that he now has some stiff competition.. for the tub.

Comment: Since we lost our 5th round pick it is neccesary for the niners to make these types of signings. We need the depth. Now they can focus on adding a pass rusher, another quality LB (Groves) maybe a safety and a WR. I think they go DE/LB and WR with their first two picks.

Comment: Got to agree with Coach Hudd on this one. Sign OL with actual NFL experience so we can draft other positions. His size is great.

Comment: I understand the need for depth, and McCloughin's desire not to spend money on interior lineman, but the last 2 signings are a little strange. One guy hasn't played in an NFL in a year and the other hasn't played in 2. How much are we paying our scouts that they can find gems from dudes who haven't trained professionally in that long of a time? We'll see in OTA's and TC though

Comment: Matt - On a non-sarcastic note, have you ever met the Yorks? What's the vibe you've gotten from them?

Posted By: mt (25/03/2008 11:47:40 AM)
Comment: Hallelujah! Super Bowl here we come! This combined with the signings of Cooper Wallace and Jerard Rabb mean happy days are here to stay! Yeeha, Dominique Ziegler is in the house! Jeb Terry & Qasim Mitchell beats the hell out of signing Shane Olivea and Max Starks. This type of move - combined with the loss of draft picks due to management ineptitude - ensures another pitiful season. Long live the Yorks!

Comment: Good move, I think. I would remind the one 'Poster' who referred to these latest O-Line signings as "scrubs" - well they maybe so. But 1; they are young, rather on the large side, and do have more actual NFL EXPERIENCE than ANY '08 top rated O-Line draft pick, and second: as Randy Cross once said when addressing the role of an O-Lineman:"You could play this position forever, since all you do is just run five yards and fall down."

Comment: Great! We now have our 5th round draft choice.

Posted By: Zed Rational (25/03/2008 10:54:05 AM)
Comment: Oh good! Terry can compete with Qasim Mitchell in the team hot-dog eating contest! Thanks, but I'd rather have the fifth-round pick. I wonder which of these two scrubs will be first out the door? The other shouldn't be far behind.

Comment: I like the idea of signing guys like this. If you throw enough mud at the wall, some of it is likely to stick... especially in the unglamorous, non-skill positions where success is much more difficult to measure.

Comment: Nice. We can definitely use the depth on the OL.

Posted By: Coach hudd (25/03/2008 10:32:25 AM)
Comment: I like it. Keep adding lineman so we can look at other positions in the draft.
