All players healthy enough to take part in offseason program

In checking with the 49ers, all of the players who were injured last season are participating in the team's offseason conditioning program.

That goes for everyone, including cornerback Tarell Brown, who sustained partial tears of the ACL and MCL in his right knee in the season-finale against the Browns. The injury did not require surgery, and Brown is back running around.

The same goes for Joe Cohen, Jay Moore, Melvin Oliver, C.J. Brewer, Manny Lawson, Alex Smith and Shaun Hill.

Jonas Jennings is dealing with a personal family issue. Coach Mike Nolan and GM Scot McCloughan are aware of the situation and have excused him from being in the Bay Area, so he can be with his family.

As previously reported, McCloughan has stated he envisions Jennings being on the team and competing for a starting job on the offensive line this season. It will probably be at right tackle, as the team's stated plan is to move Joe Staley to left tackle.

I've been trying for several months, and it looks as if I'll finally hear Alex Smith's voice again. I requested to speak to him this week. He will make himself available for a scheduled noon conference call with reporters.

Check back here this afternoon for the highlights of the interview session.

Comment: what is going on with Jonas Jennings? every season he seems to have some kind of personal family issues that cause him to leave the team.. we need to get more reliable OL, oh and any news on the status of Larry Allen coming back? We need him more than we think

Comment: Great . ahu heitman , Heitman is he good ? I don't watch much film but from a tele audi prespective: is his generation of mass and energy good with bass , snyder, staley. my favorite nfl player since by retired , a musician not only but a painist guys great his team loves him and he builds a class organization but my question remains is he football savy? is he help. surely a steal since i waited as he droped from 1st (very early) to 3rd to 7th in the hand of 49ers.

Comment: I think the odds of Jennings being gone are somewhat overplayed. We don't really have the leverage to trade him for much, we don't really need the cap room, and none of us yet has the real story on what is going on with JJ and the team and JJ and his family. What we do know is that no one else we have would be a match for him at RT, and that even if we draft one, planning to start the rookie and Staley at left would be a huge gamble for a front office thats a half step from being fired. I'll be shocked if Jennings is dropped before the draft, and would only really expect to see him go afterwards if we draft someone, and that someone wins the starting job in camp.

Comment: Yes great points berger & Marco. JJ is gone for sure & he should be. That's why drafting OT Cherilus in the 1st round makes the most sense. I know some of you are reluctant for the 49ers picking him but just like Staley is "natural" position is right tackle. This is a no-brainer guys, and just like Marcos from Stockton stated in those O-line stats it's crucial to Alex's success that the 49ers solidify that unit as quickly as possible in the draft. 49er Empire, your thoughts?

Comment: I think berger has it right.Jennings is hasta la byby

Comment: NFL ranking Offensive Line Sacks allowed 2005- 29th, 2006 -24th, 2007 - 31th tied for worst. How can anyone judge Alex Smith when the 49ers are statistically the worst O Line protecting the QB over the last three years in the NFL? Nobody can! The 2008 season & the success of Alex Smith or Shaun Hill depend on the play of the O Line. The Tackles better have a good year because the tight end won't be covering as much with the Martz's scheme. So much depends on the 5 men who play O Line. It dictates your formations. Sorry if this is a broken record, but I want the Niners to win and it is staring McNolan in the face and they haven't built a good line despite the PR.

Comment: Scuttlebutt has it that the Vikings are fed up with ORT Bryant McKinnie -- 4 arrests in 7 years -- and want to trade him. 49ers' ORT Jonas Jennings just got the "Vot of Confidence - Kiss of Death" from McC, meaning JJ's days are limited & a trade is imminent. . . . Jennings for McKinnie, anyone?

Comment: Matt, what is the deal with T. Brown? Wasn't he supposed to go 2nd round in last years draft if he had not got in trouble with the law? Where do you see him in the future with the 49ers??

Comment: Good news, thanks Matt. Staley is gonna be a hog at LT. Big improvement over turnstile JJ. Can't wait!

Comment: Good for Staley....finally we get some news from the MAIN MAN... Alex D. Smith....

Comment: I couldn't agree with you more Berger. If McC says Jonas will start at RT that probaly means he will be traded within a few weeks.

Comment: It sounds like Joe Staley is excited to play on the left side and more comfortable over there. This is music to my ears - From Staley: "I've been moved to left tackle officially which I'm very excited about. A bunch of us were out working on our own and it was the first time in a left handed stance and I felt so much more comfortable. It just seems more like my natural position. That's where I played my last two years at Central. I'm sure it will take me a while to get the footwork down but I feel like I'll be a lot more powerful on that side. On that side you are doing more punching with your right hand which is my dominant hand, and I just feel like I have more strength and that it's more of a fit. Maybe it's mental, but I'm excited about the switch."

Comment: hey Matt, Takeo info please.

Comment: McC says Martz is not a serious candidate, he gets hired. McC says Jackson is one of the two starters at WR, he is cut. McC says there is nothing to the tampering charges, we get punked. McC says he envisions Jonas as the starter at RT. Hmmm! It was nice knowing you Jonas, you are looking more like a 3rd or 4th round draft pick at this moment.

Comment: I don't think Joe Montana could have translated his skills to success with the poor quality of receivers Smith has had to deal with, not to mention a different offensive coordinator in every single year he's been in the NFL. I'd like to see them give him a fair shot and even a little consistency before cutting him loose.

Comment: Thank you, Justice Hammond, for saying what his critics have been saying since April 2005. That's what you bring to the table? Really? Next thing you're going to tell us is that Patrick Willis is amazing.

Comment: Alex Smith is a real nice guy but l am not sure if he is the guy.l believe Nolan chose him because of his wonderlic prowess thinking that would easily translate into his football acumen and wins.So far, it has not happened and doubt if it will EVER happen.

Comment: Wait a minute, JJ is still missing time with the family issue? I thought this would be resolved by now...

Posted By: Mike in SF #2 (27/03/2008 11:38:56 AM)
Comment: "Jonas Jennings is dealing with a personal family issue"... we heard that one three times last year before the big blow up!!!!! And I take Scot's word about him competing for a starting spot the same way we all took his word about Darrell Jackson being the starting WR one week before he was cut. In summary - I'm sensing a trade or cut looming in the VERY near future.
