Auburn outside linebacker Quentin Groves did not visit the 49ers today as originally planned, said Sean Kiernan of Impact Sports, the firm that represents Groves. The 49es rescheduled the pre-draft visit. It has nothing to do with Groves' recent surgery to correct a heart irregularity, Kiernan said.
Groves was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome at the NFL scouting combine in February. Auburn was aware he might have had WPW, Kiernan said.
The condition is one in which there is an extra electrical circuit in the heart. If left untreated, WPW could lead to a rapid heart beat.
On March 27, Groves had an out-patient procedure in Birmingham, Ala., Kiernan said. A catheter was inserted into his leg and maneuvered up to his heart, where the extra electrical circuit was destroyed.
Groves was advised to avoid strenuous workouts for five days. Seven days after the procedure, he underwent an electrocardiogram and everything was "100-percent normal," Kiernan said.
"There are no long-term ramifications," Kiernan said. "Every team I've spoken to was pleased that he's already had this taken care of. We're very happy somebody picked up on this (at the combine) and that it's no longer an issue. Once it's taken care of, it's done."
Kiernan said he has every reason to believe this will have no impact whatsoever on Groves' draft status. Letters explaining Groves' condition were sent to each of the 32 NFL teams.
GM Scot McCloughan personally attended Groves' pro day workout at Auburn last month. He appears to be on the team's radar screen at the No. 29 overall pick.

Comment: Hey Matt,
Just read an artical in the NY times that Matt Hazeltine died this week of Lou Gehrigs disease. Guess I am dating myself but I remember him and Wilcox at Kezar back in 60s laying some wood on anybody with a different color uniform on. He was always a favorite and will be missed by those of us old enough to remember him.
Response: Actually, Matt Hazeltine died in 1987. He died of ALS. This is notable because two of his teammates from the 1964 49ers also died of ALS (Bob Waters and Gary Lewis). The 49ers have awarded the Matt Hazeltine Iron Man Award annually since 1987. Jeff Ulbrich won it last season. --Matt M.

Comment: Hey you idiots, put your money where your mouths are and donate some freakin' money to this family. You don't have to donate youre paycheck, just the little cash you have to help out with the funeral and the econmic transition the family will inevitablly endure. You blow hards need to stop chatting and start doing you freaking idiots.

Comment: "Invasive electrophysiological study and possible ablation of accessory pathway may be offered to well informed asymptomatic individuals with WPW if they are willing to trade the very small risk of subsequent sudden death or incapacity for a small immediate procedural risk of serious complications or death."

Comment: Does the Spikes offer expire before the draft? Because the drafting of another LB seems it would hurt his situation for roster spot.

Comment: Big Bug 415 -thanks for the post -could tell by his photo he was a good guy -just so tragic ...hard to read about and can only imagine the profound grief and effect on this family !Whoever shot him will pay... one way or another... that is how it is.

Comment: Bill: Groves is 23 years old. Matt said he had surgery on March 27th, not that he was 27 years old.

Comment: Matt. Wouldn't taking a 27 year old linebacker (Groves) be a bit risky?

Comment: Matt,
I just read the article on Solari, in a word "BRUTAL" coming from a father who has has twin girls (7 yrs), my wife ALWAYS tells me to not make a big deal out of a traffic situation & NEVER respond to a "hostile driver" no matter who's at fault. It's just not worth it, my condolences go out to the Solari Family. God bless them!

Comment: RIP. This violence sickens me. Puts the 49ers in perspective. Sports aren't as important as life itself. Hang those guys by their jockstrap. That is, if SF police, our DA and the legal system actually work.

Comment: My prayers and condolences to Mrs. Solaris and their children. I went to Mission High School with "Big Lou" (thats what some people called him), and I remember him as a real cool dude. I remember he used to work on alot of cars in the Mission District, and played alot of football with us in the streets. He seemed like a real good person, and it's horrible that his children had to witness this sensless tragedy.

Comment: I just wanted to acknowledge who was responsible for the goodness that helped the Solari's. Kidash98. I wrote this at the "Zone" and want others to know...
"I want to express my deep, deep admiration and thanks for assisting your friends in such a time of need. I applaud you, sir. I have witnessed again the greatness that can be within we human beings. Your devotion to ease and comfort your friends at a time of profound grief only speaks volumes. Dude, it guys like you that make this world go 'round and I for one want to acknowledge it publicly. I can't stress enough the magnitude of your goodness in this day and age. All it takes is action.
When it hits "home" you realize just how precious life is. I have four boys and a girl...I can't even imagine. I have been through my share of grief and I completely have you and your friends, the Solari family, in my family's thoughts and prayers."
He is an example of the good in us...I, for one, thank Kidash98 for it.

Comment: The Steelers are making noises about taking this guy with their #23. My recommendation to McGM... stay put. If we trade up, we'll most likely have to give up our #2 and Groves is not worth a double dip. Stand pat and take Connor if he is indeed BPA at 29.

Comment: I saw a video on TV this morning about the shooting but didn't catch it all. Stuff like that just shouldn't happen thats ridiculous. Thanks for the link, Matt. My prayers to the Solari fam.

Comment: When sending a donation to the City National Bank you might want to add specific acc# information to ensure the money goes into the correct account. If the acct# is not available, maybe clarify what needs to be written on the envelope and/or check to guarantee the money goes to the right place.
Response: Thank you. When I get the updated information on where to send donations, I'll pass it along. --Matt M.

Comment: This may sound like a small matter, but people (especially in the media) should stop referring to the procedure that was used on Groves as "surgery." It was not surgery. No one cut into Groves' chest or heart. The procedure is known as "cardiac ablation," and it is very definitely a non-surgical procedure. It is also very routine and extremely effective. Groves is no more of a risk to have heart problems at this point than any other player in the draft.

Comment: Pretty good medical work by the experts, but I'm not sold completely on this guy. A gamble but not without potential big rewards. I'm thinking OL is gonna go fast & furious, unless we have a diamond in the rough we might better take one early. We're gonna need a starter. My diamond OL is j.sullivan center from ND. Any interest in this guy by the Niners Matt?

Comment: Sorry about the double post. My prayers go out to the Solari family, and it is just extremely sad that this is the kind of world that we live in when people have to worry about being shot when driving down the freeway. My thoughts go out to the family and hope they can get through this, especially the kids who had to witness this tragedy.
