Baas to undergo surgery, expected to miss part of training camp

The 49ers' offensive line - already thin as it is - will be without a starter for a good portion of the offseason and into training camp.

David Baas, 26, projected as the starter at right guard, is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle. The surgery could happen as early as tomorrow. Baas is expected to miss part of training camp. He is scheduled to be ready for the start of the regular season, said club spokesman Aaron Salkin.

The injury is a major blow to the 49ers, who do not have much depth on the offensive line. The 49ers are expected to take an offensive lineman with one of their top picks in the draft.

Baas started nine games at right guard last season after Justin Smiley sustained his season-ending shoulder injury. Baas was the No. 33 overall pick in the 2005 draft. He started just five games his first two seasons -- all as a rookie.

He was scheduled to be a starter as a rookie, but he sustained a torn hamstring muscle leading up to his first training camp. Because he missed most of the exhibition season, Baas was only able to move into the starting lineup later in the season after injuries.

Baas did not start for the club in 2006 after the 49ers signed Larry Allen, whom the Cowboys had released. Allen, an unrestricted free agent, has not informed the 49ers whether he plans to play a 15th NFL season.

Comment: For those that think Baas is a bust, let me ask you something. What do you do for a living that is anywhere near the talent level needed to enter the NFL, let alone actually start? He is a great player that has had injuries. All great players have injuries, work through them, and get back on the field. It is quite funny that you think your opinion from your couch has any meaning.

Comment: I'd prefer Duane Brown. I agree though Baas appears to be a bust.

Comment: Hes got plenty of time to heal, maybe he can rack up some pounds while hes resting

Comment: I'm liking Mike McGlynn more and more for this very reason, depth and attitude. Baas is already close to wearing the bust tag IMO. No sooner gets into the starting rotation and has difficulty staying healthy? Something sounds SOFT to me? Hoping he proves me wrong, but Draft some healthy Big Nasties this weekend please? Plenty of options for the later rounds, and hoping we manage to acquire some additional picks via trade for this very reason, more DEPTH.

Comment: Get rid of this piece of junk! I am sick of this guy ! He is a bust, just like Alex and Vernon. See YA BAAS!

Comment: AJ - I believe he did it recently while lifting weights. Bad luck for David.

Posted By: AJ (24/04/2008 2:23:44 PM)
Comment: How the hell did this happen? Did he suffer an injury recently or was it after the season ended? I sure would hate hear the he sustained the injury the last game of the year and decided to put off surgery. I agree with Roy. Trade their 1st round pick to KC for their 2nd and 3rd. That way you're picking up an extra pick. Maybe they can even squeeze a 5th in there since they lost that pick!

Comment: this only confirms that fact that we will take 2 offensive lineman in the draft. One to unseat Jennings, one to back up at guard/center.

Posted By: Randy in Santa Rosa (24/04/2008 1:17:18 PM)
Comment: Damn, Baas has had some bad luck with injuries... At least Wragge should be able to fill in until he's back. Did this injury happen during the off season conditioning program?

Posted By: Dirk (24/04/2008 1:14:25 PM)
Comment: During his first season Baas was a rookie. No reason to be confused. ;)

Posted By: SonocoNinerFan (24/04/2008 1:08:44 PM)
Comment: The Baas injury sucks but I don't see this changing much. We need one OT to challenge and hopefully unseat Jennings and we need interior o-line depth. We obviously can't ignore the anemic pass-rush because Baas got hurt.

Posted By: Roy Kaltschmidt (24/04/2008 1:04:24 PM)
Comment: I doubt Cherilus will be there at #29. I'd trade back with KC or Jets into top of 2nd. Take Groves and Kelly. Use that extra 4th round pick from KC/Jets - move back into lower 2nd or high 3rd to get Nicks and then get Zuttah with Niners 3rd round pick.

Posted By: Ray Policar (24/04/2008 1:01:20 PM)
Comment: I have read this sentence twelve times and still am confused: "Baas started just five games his first season, all as a rookie." Is this a trick ???

Comment: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/04/23/SPK010AHFH.DTL interesting article on local guy dennis dixon...he is a projected 4th-6th round pick...i think he's definitely worth a 2nd day gamble pick. he could easily be the 3rd string qb and maybe compete for a starting job if smith doesn't pan out this year with martz.

Posted By: WizardofOZ (24/04/2008 12:32:04 PM)
Comment: A right tackle and offensive line depth is priority one need in this draft. I like Cherilus, Baker, Collins and Nicks for right tackle. The reserves need to be able to play several positions on the line like Chad Rinehart, Mike McGlynn, John Greco or Digger Dujnoch. Go 49ers!!!

Posted By: Darth (24/04/2008 12:30:09 PM)
Comment: This Sucks but don't panic Wragge is a good player and was picked over Baas to play center remember? He should have replaced Allen after Smith got pancaked. But Niners by all means Draft as many O-Lineman as you can.

Posted By: Matt in SR (24/04/2008 12:16:57 PM)
Comment: All the more reason to draft offense! All six picks should be offense. The team had 237 yards a game last season, that is the worst stat I have ever heard!! Go Niners.

Posted By: Demian (24/04/2008 12:05:35 PM)
Comment: Larry Allen's poor pass protection is the reason Alex Smith had a 350 lb lineman end his season last year. No more Larry Allen. The Rachal kid from USC can play guard or Tackle and he could be availible at 39.

Comment: here we go again.......when and how did this happen Matt?

Posted By: P'Nelly (24/04/2008 12:00:15 PM)
Comment: I see them trading out of #29 to get some additional picks to be used on O-lineman. #29 is a great spot to move down, cause many teams will be trying to jump up and draft the second QB of the draft after M.Ryan goes in the first. I hope Larry Allen hasn't eaten his way to 425 lbs....he could be in for a good 1 year deal! Saturday just got bigger for McNolan.

Posted By: sid (24/04/2008 11:59:23 AM)
Comment: It's clear this needs to be the OFFENSIVE LINE draft. I don't want to see anything else but the drafting of OL. So now in addition to 2 OT, we need an OG.

Posted By: Dave Bird (24/04/2008 11:56:20 AM)
Comment: Matt, Sorry to hear about this. Guess it puts more emphasis on OL in the draft. Can you remind us of the timed speeds at the combine (or what they were listed at for the day of the draft) for Parys Haralson and Jay Moore? Are these guys as good as any of the potential pass-rushers available to the 49ers in the first or second round? My guess is yes.

Posted By: DMC (24/04/2008 11:54:46 AM)
Comment: Although this is bad news, I think if we can get him back for at least a portion of training camp he and the team will be fine.

Posted By: Simran (24/04/2008 11:49:06 AM)
Comment: How did he get this injury? This is a huge blow.

Posted By: Mike in SF #1 (24/04/2008 11:48:36 AM)
Comment: Did he just tear a peck while lifting? That's a real bummer.

Posted By: CM Toma, Ogden UT (24/04/2008 11:43:46 AM)
Comment: I wonder what Larry Allen's intentions are.

Posted By: Duppy (24/04/2008 11:41:40 AM)
Comment: Forty-third!!
