Minicamp gets going in a few minutes here at the 49ers' practice facility in Santa Clara. The 49ers have 84 players listed on their minicamp roster, including two "tryout" players.
The team is set to practice today from 10:30 a.m. to noon. They come back for another 90-minute workout from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
The roster limit is 80 players. There is some talk that the limit might be extended to 86 for training camp to compensate for the closure of NFL Europe. In the past, teams were granted roster exemptions for the players who went to NFL Europe.
So why do the 49ers have more players than what is allowed on the roster? The six draft picks do not count toward the limit because they are not under contract. None of the draft picks has signed a contract. Yet, they are allowed to participate in the minicamp. (Obviously, they have to sign contracts to work during training camp.)

The two tryout guys are here to help ease the workloads of kicker Joe Nedney and long-snapper Brian Jennings. The "tryout" guys are kicker Brandon Pace (Virginia Tech) and long-snapper Charles Missant (Western Michigan). Missant has been in camp with the Jets. The man sharing the punting chores with Andy Lee is Ricky Schmitt, who is already under contract.

To follow up on some questions about the undrafted rookies: Ezra Butler, Lance Brandenburgh and Shaun Richardson are listed as linebackers; D.J. Parker and Lewis Baker are on the 49ers' roster as defensive backs; and Louis Holmes is going to be placed at defensive line.

Comment: Could it be possible that Scot sees the depth at OT to mean verteran cutdowns June 1? Just thinking outside the box? I also want to see QMitchell/DDuckett when they line up.

Comment: Hey Matt- In your opinion what will have to be the win/loss record after the season is over for Nolan to keep his job? Will 8-8 cut it, or will he need to make the playoffs as a wildcard to save his job? Thanks for all the great work!

Comment: Hey Matt:
Could you check with Martz and see why it is that we have not picked up any OTs but we have picked up 4 OGs? Does Martz/McNolan think that there is not a OT problem on the line?

Comment: tom l, smoke and mirrors my man. These guys are like politicians, you can't trust much of anything that comes out of their pie holes.
--
This is just speculation on my part, but maybe they were targeting a guard the whole time. Maybe they were just trying to not tip their hand, again speculation on my part. And really I have never been that good and speculating.

Comment: tom, they said after the draft that so many were took in the first rounds that they felt all the good ones got took at those spots, plus i think rachal can play both spots

Comment: Matt, Does the team see Ezra Butler as the "Ted" Linebacker or as the pass rushing ROLB? Where will he play first if they aren't sure yet?

Comment: Did anyone notice how no tackles were drafted or signed as undrafteds? Scotty told us repeatedly pre -draft how deep the draft was in OTs. What is going on?

Comment: LOL, Jon in SoCal. You busted me bro, I was nitpicking.

Comment: Hey Matt, what's the latest on ol' Franklin's ankle? I'm telling you. They should have sat him out the rest of last season, when the season was already in the toilet. A blind man could have seen Franklin limping off the field on the regular. I know Franklin is a warrior. Heck, he may have even had some bonuses he was trying to reach. But to see him out there at nowhere near 100% was painfull for me to watch(not literally but you get the gist).

Comment: Sorry jfainsf49, had to do it. It seems like holmes is going to be training camp fodder. He doesn't do much on the field, typical looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. Competition is good though, so let's see how he does.

Comment: Hey Ninermaniac, the NFL Europe has been closed. No teams this year. So no players.

Comment: Matt, what were your impressions of the great Lawerence Phillips during his short tenure with the 49ers? Was there as much chaos as there seemed to be? What were the teams ideas about Phillips missed block on Aneas Williams? Did you ever have a chance to interview Phillips?
Response: That comes out of nowhere. Phillips' tenure with the 49ers was a disaster. I interviewed him, sure. He clearly had some problems. --Matt M.

Comment: Hey Matt, is there any 9er players who were in NFL Europe this year?
Posted By: Jon in SoCal (02/05/2008 10:48:35 AM)
Comment: Sorry had to do it. Official Combine #'s are 6'4", 270. Here's the analysis From NFLDraftScout.com:
Overview
After posting 192 tackles, 40 tackles for loss and 16 sacks while at Scottsdale Community College, Holmes was almost universally ranked as the elite JUCO prospect in the country before signing with Arizona. Though he certainly looks the part and showed flashes while with the Wildcats, his production simply never materialized at the D-I level. Holmes' size-speed package will be enough to entice some NFL team to take a chance, but he displayed little on the football field while at Arizona to warrant consideration. A classic boom or bust prospect.
Analysis
Positives: Looks the part. Lean, ripped upper and lower body with room for additional growth...Flashes quickness off the snap. ... Flashes some explosiveness in his initial confrontation with the offensive tackle and can control his man. ... Helped himself with a productive week of practice at the Hula Bowl. ... Good straight-line speed. ... Expected to work out well.
Negatives: Inconsistent. ... Flashes quickness off the snap, but is just as often late. ...Flashes explosive hands to jolt the offensive tackle, but more often is controlled at the point and occasionally driven back. ... Marginal instincts. ... Struggles to locate the ball and lacks the change of direction to react. ... Invited to Combine on the basis of his reputation, not his play on the field.

Comment: just wondering, is mini camp, with pads on? is there any contact?
Posted By: jfainsf49 (02/05/2008 10:37:14 AM)
Comment: Hey Matt, Kevin Lynch has Holmes, listed as "ripped 6-6, 270 pounds." You have him listed as 6-4, 263 pounds. Youse can't both be right. Or can youse? Maybe one measurement is barefoot and the other with shoes, I don't know.
Response: Let me see where the 49ers have him listed on their latest roster . . . 6-4, 263. --Matt M.

Comment: Awesome work again Matt, Thank you. I'm very excited for the camp this year. Good singings during the Draft. The competition is going to be awesome. I really can see Martz using Jason Hill in many 3 wide receiver sets with his speed. If no one is open, the back field will be open for Gore to take a dump off and just GO =D
