Niners, ex-Raider Sims share mutual interest

The 49ers are interested in signing free-agent offensive tackle Barry Sims, who started 119 of the 136 games in his nine-year career with the Raiders. Sims was released at the beginning of free agency. The interest is mutual on Sims' side, his agent said.

The 49ers do not have much depth behind presumptive starting tackles Joe Staley and Jonas Jennings. The club this week moved rookie Chilo Rachal to right tackle after drafting the USC guard in the second round. The second-team right tackle during OTA workouts has been Damane Duckett, who made the transition from defensive line a year ago.

The 49ers have an obvious need for a veteran tackle. Kwame Harris left for the Raiders as a free agent this year, and the club plans to move Adam Snyder to guard on a full-time basis. Snyder is slated to start at left guard, as the 49ers expect Larry Allen to retire after 14 NFL seasons.

The 49ers and Sims' representative, San Francisco-based agent Ken Vierra, have been in contact for a couple months. There is mutual interest in a Sims-49ers union. Vierra said he expects things to heat up next week. He added that there are "other teams involved," in addition to the 49ers.

"There is definitely interest on both sides," Vierra said. "With veterans, there is certainly an evaluation on tape, but it's important to get in for a visit. There's a feeling-out process. With a guy off the street, he takes what he can get. But there is definite interest on both sides."

Sims, 33, played nine seasons for the Raiders after being acquired as an undrafted free agent from Utah in 1999.

The Raiders drafted three players in the first round who were earmarked to play left tackle in the past decade. But Sims won the challenge each time against Mo Collins (1998), Matt Stinchcomb (1999) and Robert Gallery (2004).

Sims spends his offseason training in Tempe, Ariz., and Los Angeles. He lives in San Ramon.

Comment: Scotty D, Kwami did fill in for Joe quite a few times last year. If not rotating them were the case why get Sims DUH!! its no the 70s anymore. what they were blocking for over 15 seconds a few times and are winded, just keep em in right?

Comment: Martz's scheme will have to be really clicking to bail Sims out. He is both sack-prone & penalty-prone, tending to wilt mightily against speed-rushers in particular (eg. Simeon Rice in Super Bowl 37). There's quite a number of reputable edge DEs in our division -- Kerney, Tapp, Julian Peterson, LaBoy, Little, James Hall -- all of whom look like a mismatch for Sims.

Comment: Wow, the word "presumptive" is sure appearing an awful lot these days!

Comment: Wait a sec....did we just trade Harris for Sims? And how could Sims possibly be an upgrade if Harris won the job over there in Oakland?

Comment: What does the tale of the tape show? I'd expect a scouting report including rate of decline performance. Then consider his fire or passion level to humiliate the opponent.

Comment: Hey Matt, I saw Ratto's column this morning. It indicated that despite the passing of Measure G, we're no closer to an SF stadium than we were. Do you have any insight on how things are proceeding stadium-wise?

Comment: Yes, Kwame over Sims as a starter may be a slight upgrade . . . just like Sims over Duckett or Reuber as depth is probably more than a slight upgrade . . . and much cheaper than Kwame.

Comment: To clarify: by Smith, I meant Reggie Smith.

Comment: On the official websites' notes from Tuesday, it said Goldson looked good with a couple interceptions. Good news. I am really pulling for him to win the starting job. Matt how are both Goldson and Smith looking in your eyes ?

Comment: One of the press outlets stated that the Raiders' adding Kwame Harris was a slight improvement over Sims, which makes any 49ers interest a real head-scratcher...

Comment: I thought I read somewhere that Sims has led the league in sacks allowed for the last 5 years. I do know that he has not been very good (pretty horrible)for years and his ability to keep his starting job has less to with his talent and more to do with the Raiders inept ability to draft. I am still perplexed that the 49ers are trying to now fill the holes in the O-Line. We seem to be the team for taking on over-the-hill cast off players from around the league. Man I hope our starters stay healthy this year of it could get ugly fast.

Comment: Ninermaniac - In case you have NEVER seen an NFL football game (something that seems likely given your ridiculous comment) you NEVER and I mean NEVER, DON'T, UNHEARD OF, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING rotate Offensive tackles. This isn't Pop Warner dude where everyone needs a little playing time. Its great for depth to bring on a Vet like Simms-.. but rotating O-Tackles during a game? Yikes you really are a "maniac" and an uneducated one at that.

Posted By: SonocoNinerFan (04/06/2008 10:28:21 AM)
Comment: I agree maniac that Sims would be a nice addition to add quality/experienced depth at OT, but not so we can rotate them. If Staley and Jennings are healthy they need to stay on the field.

Posted By: ninermaniac (04/06/2008 9:53:43 AM)
Comment: That would be a great addition although I wonder why he was released. Jonas and Staley are swing T's so if we get a couple more decent T's you can have a good rotation and keep em fresh.

Comment: Tim - i pray yu are right, the raiders i saw the last two yrs were horrible........StonerLab are you buying season tickets this yr?

Posted By: StonerLab (04/06/2008 8:32:45 AM)
Comment: The 49ers need to be quick here & get Sims signed. It's pretty obvious that the guy can still play & he's a veteran who lives in the Bay Area. Considering how weak the 49ers are at that position you would think there would be a little more urgency to get Sim's signed. Hello?

Posted By: Berger (04/06/2008 8:07:17 AM)
Comment: I'd like to sign Sims. But the biggest news of the day has to be the vote in SF on F nd G. Looks like the 49ers are staying in the Bay area one way or another!

Comment: Simms was one of the Raiders best o-line in the past decade. They have been bad for awhile but remember they went to the superbowl in 02. They havnt always been bad on the line. I think he is probably the best free agent tackle available. I hope he wants to stay local and come across the bay!

Posted By: oneniner (04/06/2008 7:04:32 AM)
Comment: Good to know he beat out three players picked in the first round.....but reality is the raiders o-line have sucked for a long time.....

Posted By: Cleveland Mike (04/06/2008 5:15:22 AM)
Comment: I'll take him. He is a pro all the way and can lend good depth . The youngsters on the O line will learn from him. Hey I dislike Da Raiders but this guy can play. Sign him....or seomone else will.
