Battle reports to work for 49ers OTAs

Receiver Arnaz Battle rejoined the team for meetings this morning, as the 49ers kick off Week 2 of their organized team activities. Today's practice session is closed to the media.

Battle missed the first week of voluntary OTAs. Coach Mike Nolan said last week he expected Battle to report, and had not heard from him through the first two days. Battle remained in Dallas, where he makes his offseason home.

There was immediate speculation Battle might be disgruntled with his place on the depth chart after the club signed Bryant Johnson and Isaac Bruce.

On Wednesday, Battle spoke to the 49ers. Battle told Instant 49ers/The Press Democrat that he missed the first week of practices due to "personal reasons." He said he planned to attend the final two weeks of workouts.

Also, attending his first OTA workouts today is rookie linebacker Larry Grant of Ohio State, the club's seventh-round draft pick. Grant was prohibited from attending these practices until Ohio State's classes ended. Grant will join the competition at the "ted" linebacker position.

Receiver Cam Colvin of Oregon is the only rookie who has yet to join the team. He is not eligible to join the 49ers on a full-time basis until June 13.

The media are allowed to watch practices the next two Tuesdays, including tomorrow.

Comment: Matt, IMO maybe Nolan does not want the extra distractions the media can create. I think its one thing to report a story, another to fuel a controversy.

Comment: "Simms was the left tackle on a Raiders team two years ago that gave up a whopping 72 sacks and rendered the offense inoperable. Simms is no longer a Raider because he didn't fit with the team's conversion to zone-blocking running scheme, which the 49ers employ about half the time. But what can the 49ers expect from a 33-year-old who's still trolling for work in June?"..........i just have a feeling this guy is not worth it.......I rather we take a look at Jordan Black.

Comment: Hey Jon in SoCal -- "...gotta get your talent on the field." You're KILLIN' me!! I love it. Hey, how about a short passing game based on the onside kick? With Nedney's accuracy, we'd score at least once a game. Plus nobody would know what the hell we're trying to do, so we'd totally own the confusion factor.

Comment: Hey Matt... Why do you believe that the 49ers are only allowing 4 OTAs open to the media (bare minimum)?? Especially when they are usually open to the media? Is it because they dont want the media to see the things Martz is doing with the offense as far as formations, personnel packages, etc...? Just curious if you had any idea why...

Comment: Interesting change in the OTA policy. I see three things why. Martz is putting in some super-secret offensive plan (one that works). The 9ers don't want to have the media watch Martz blow a gasket every 3 seconds yelling "WTF, what were you doing last year. Or, they don't want the media to see that Andy Lee is getting reps at ROLB and Nedney at RT - gotta get your talent on the field.

Comment: It's probably a good thing in a way, that Battle thought about holding out... Nolan & Martz will be giving Jason Hill more reps in his place. Thanks Arnaz!

Comment: It'll be interesting to see how Nolan treats battle. even though Martz is in control of the offense, Nolan is famous for holding grudges.

Comment: The NFL doesn't limit the amount of OTAs the media are allowed to report on, they make a minimum that teams must allow the media to come to. Big difference. If it were up to the media, the reporters would be there every day. Matt- Will we be getting any news this week during practice days where you're not allowed to attend? Would you know if Alex Smith tore his ACL, or would we have to wait until Tuesday?

Response: This is correct. The league says a minimum number of OTA practices shall be open to the media, and the 49ers have chosen to stick to the bare minimum. If there is some major development, I trust the 49ers will alert the media in a timely fashion. --Matt M.

Comment: Kendal its an NFL rule this year limiting the amount of practices the media can report on. Matt so will Colvin be there on Friday or will he have to wait on Monday? Are you planning on sitting down with him since he has seemed to have generated some buzz coming back to the Bay after being undrafted? I hope he doesn't get plucked off our practice squad this year.

Comment: Worst! Hey Matt - were OTA'S closed last year?

Response: No. All the OTAs were open to the media last season. --Matt M.
