Other needy teams compete with 49ers for Sims

Free-agent offensive tackle Barry Sims met with 49ers coach Mike Nolan and offensive coordinator Mike Martz on Monday. But the tour continues, as other teams vie for his services.

Sims is scheduled to meet with the Patriots, Ravens and Rams this week before figuring out the next move.

"(The) meetings went very well," said Ken Vierra, Sims' agent. "He was impressed by Nolan and Martz."

Vierra said he would talk with 49ers chief contract negotiator Paraag Marathe on Monday and "go from there."

Each of the four teams interested in Sims offers some intriguing possibilities for the nine-year pro. Sims became a free agent when the Raiders released him in a salary-cap move earlier this offseason.

The Patriots' starting right tackle, Nick Kaczur, has been a starter since his rookie season in '05. But it is unclear if Kaczur will be subject to disciplinary action as he faces a drug possession charge. Cal product Ryan O'Callaghan is the backup, and the Patriots did not draft a lineman.

The Ravens are thin at tackle, as Adam Terry and Jared Gaither compete at left tackle. Jonathan Ogden is expected to announce his retirement.

The Rams had all kinds of problems on their offensive line last season. Orlando Pace has played in just 11 games the past two seasons. Alex Barron might be pushed for his starting job at right tackle by rookie John Greco.

On paper, the 49ers' situation is a bit more settled that those teams. Joe Staley is scheduled to start at left tackle, while Jonas Jennings is penciled in at right tackle. But the 49ers are woefully thin at the tackle positions.

Chilo Rachal, who played guard throughout his three-year career at USC, is working at right tackle during the OTAs. Jennings has never played a complete 16-game season in his career, so the 49ers figure to need some help at that position at some point in the season.

Comment: Mike 49er, Great call on "Sprint Right Option" It is an absolute staple in the WCO! Mr. Walsh would be proud.

Comment: StevenG is right about Sims, it was more than just the 200K. It was about the rest of his contract. He's also right about having Sims playing OT than Kwame. Sims is clearly a solid OT with a solid resume regardless of where he came from.

Comment: SFJay, as I understoodd it, they only cleared 200k, but avoided paying him the rest of his $6.67 million cap charge in bonuses (like a $2.5 million roster bonus). If that's not right, I'm all ears. http://www.modbee.com/sports/story/226911.html

Comment: StevenG, although the Raiders did recoup some cap space it was only around 200K so if he still had any value left I am sure they would have made room for him. He will be just be another stopgap option, at least they will probably move Rachal back to Guard where he belongs.

Comment: Regarding the Sims/Harris swap: Sims was cut for cap reasons, Harris was not. Backup or no, Sims is probably the better player.

Comment: When I first heard the 9ers were interested in Simms I had concerns, until I found out the Patriots were also interested. Does JJ have any motivation to play 16 a game injury free season?

Comment: Two plays that I just picked up off the Tv watching Walsh and Montana: Red Texas 22 ( short pass to the halfback) and Sprint Right Option(the catch). Good luck

Comment: Rich, DE- The Raiders see Harris as a starter and paid him as such. SF would look to sign Sims to a short term deal as a backup that is far less costly.

Comment: Matt, great work as always. Is the release of Mitchell in preparation for the signing of Sims? Thanks!

Comment: Do you think OTAs being closed to the media on some days has anything to do with Martz being here? I just remember a few years ago Martz getting mad at a reporter for asking specific questions about plays involving Marshall Faulk and Trung Candidate.

Comment: Doesn't it seem a bit odd that the Niners let Kwame walk away (Raiders). Yet, they are interested in signing a player the Raiders don't want anymore? Both offensive lineman. What gives?

Comment: Bud San Jose....how about "Black 59 Razor". It's the call you see Montana making at the beginning of NFL films...I believe it's the audibled slant to Rice in the endzone. Of course, I'm probably on the late show with this suggestion as I'm sure it's a popular one and you probably have already used it, but I thought I'd give it a try just in case!

Comment: "90/O" - Openeing game against the Jets, Garrison Hearst takes a 95+ yard run to the house in overtime.

Comment: Matt, how about an interview with Jonas Jennings and a follow-up article, focussed on what he is doing/has done to assure that he will start all 16 regular season games this year? Give the dude a chance to explain himself. We might all learn something.

Comment: Matt every year I use a famous play call for my team name (Fantasy Football). I was wondering if you or the guys here on Instant 49ers could help me with a name.If anyone has a team name please please feel free to help a felo 49er faithful. Thanks

Comment: Hey Matt... I was wondering, since the Press Democrat seems the only source to claim that Shane Olivea has signed with a team,( but doesn't reveal which team ) could you shed some light on this mystery for me?... thanks.

Comment: Matt, since Jennings is penciled in at RT do you foresee Chilo Rachal at RG. I really hope that this is the line up? LT-Staley, LG-Snyder, Heitman, RG-Rachal, and RT-Jennings. I really think this line up gives the best protection. What Line-up do you hope for Matt?? Thanks for the great work you do!!

Comment: Great Work Matt. Its a great thing to have 49ers.pressdemocrat to get inside niner news. a question: what about shane olivea. I think he should be the highest rated FA at T. Is there any news about him? May be with the 49ers?

Posted By: Dino (09/06/2008 11:08:10 PM)
Comment: First...of all, I would be very upset if Sims ends up with the Patriots. It seems like they're getting all the good FA vets their way due to their chances for a SB ring. It makes sense for seasoned veterans to do so but the Patriots are stock piling their talents this way, regardless of how old the vets are. Plus it's more fun to see Brady throwing on his back. The Niners need Sims due to the fact that Jennings won't make it past game 5. A hangnail or upset stomach is already in the schedule books. I believe Rachal will stay at tackle even with the addition of Sims with the afore mentioned reasons.

Comment: Matt Keep up the good work... Do the 49ers have a realistic shot at Simms? How is Jordan from Cal so far, will he make the team?
