Cats and dogs living together? 49ers, Raiders to hold joint practice?

The 49ers and Raiders are in talks to hold one day of joint practices leading up to their exhibition game Friday, Aug. 8. The teams do not play in the regular season.

If the sides finalize the agreement, the practice session would likely take place in Napa -- home of Raiders training camp -- and be closed to the general public.

Coach Mike Nolan in the past has expressed his desire to practice against another team to break up the monotony of going head-to-head against teammates all through training camp.

The 49ers held discussions last year with the Denver Broncos about holding joint practices leading up to the first exhibition game for both teams. But the Broncos ran into logistical problems in finding hotel space for an extended stay in the Bay Area.

The 49ers' first practice of training camp is scheduled for July 25 at the club's Santa Clara practice facility. Camp closes Aug. 22.

Comment: Well oneniner, see why I wanted Nolan sacked? Now either in exhibition 3, it'll be Smith or Hill as your starter, even though NEITHER ONE OF THEM performed. You can't just say to Smith/Hill, you get 1 chance out there and I'll name one of you the starter in the 3rd exhibition for the season. First off, the Raiders used ALL their exhibitions, and even though they did a bad job with the mind games in who started and who didn't, least the Raiders gave their QB chances to earn a starting job. Nolan should let Smith/Hill air it out all exhibition, then name the starter when game 1 of the regular season starts. This is an example of Nolan wanting to get fired in the worse way. I only wish Nolan was in the WWE Smackdown, he can team with Edge in being the biggest jackoff.

Comment: Kelly - He probably made a typo the first time, because it has been edited. He still ain't real bright with that Manny Lawson comment.

Comment: "Yes it's true mayor. This man has no...." Awesome movie! I also use the cat and dog line when my kids can't get along. Nice job, Matt.

Comment: The Niners and Raiders holding practice together really is no big deal. The problem with something like this is getting the fans together. I won't say that all of my fellow 49ers fans are perfect, but a good percentage of Raiders fans are loudmouth, obnoxious, troublemakers. Put them together, and something stupid is almost certainly going to happen, and if I had to bet on who would be to blame, a Raiders fan (or fans) would be the safe bet.

Comment: Niners Raiders is a rivalry, but a mutual one, There is alot of 9er fans that have 1 or 2 friends who are Raaiderrs fans. I think this should have been done along time ago, after all this is the Bay Area. 8 Superbowl trophys amongst the 2. Baseball A's Brand 4 World Series Titles, G-Men, Barry Bonds all time Home Run Leader. With GS, SJ Sharks and Spartans coming up again. NFL is by far dominating on all the other sports. There is a tremendous upside if these 2 teams agree to cooperate, for the Bay Area and the other sports here. The pink colored jerseys for women should be worn by the team on Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This might be a good idea for women to stop, look and watch the game as well as being a great contributor. Only on a home game, or make a tinted pink away jersey.

Comment: What is wrong with Coach nolan?.... He his trying hard to lose his job.....He needs to give Alex the ball now, Alex needs all the reps out there......stop this nonsense about Hill; there is no way ever Hill can survive a whole season talk less of 6 games, I mean cmon.....Alex Smith is AUTHENTIC when he his with a good coach, WE KNOW THIS, we all watched how he was growing in his 2nd yr.... Hill is not the answer now or the future ....)(.WHY, PLEASE WHY ARE WE WASTING TIME WITH THIS USELESS QB COMPETITION ....Give Alex the ball.....DAMMITT!!!!

Comment: *sigh* Nolan needs to cut the charades already. To me his plan is obvious, put the pressure on Alex by creating a sense of competitiveness during the offseason, as to make him a better qb for the season and so he can regain whatever confidence he may have lost with his teammates. But for goodness sake, stick him with all 1st team snaps now so he can actually be ready to play in September. Hill played like a hero at the end of last season, his performance gave me goosebumps and he deserved that new contract. But Alex is our guy and we should ride him until the wheels fall off, and judging by if he has a bad season this year, they will fall off into the bay and drift out of the nfl.

Comment: The Yahoo piece said HILL had fallen out of favor for the starting job, FYI.

Response: Hill must've somehow got back in favor at around 9:30 a.m. today. That's when Nolan said Hill and Smith would split snaps in training camp, as well as the first two exhibition starts. --Matt M.

Comment: Hey Matt, Have any of the players intimated their feelings to you about practicing against another team?

Posted By: Cleveland Mike (10/07/2008 12:59:04 PM)
Comment: Matt-Makes a ton of good sense to practice with Da Raiders. Just don't get too physical. Years ago Walsh and Dad Nolan did this ame thing with the Chargers I believe. On another note I am in San Jose on biz and went to a local Border's to buy a Maiocco book. I could not find one so I ended up buying a Dennis Georgatos book about The Niners. Oh well Matt, maybe next time. He's a bud of yours so he owes you a beer. Nice book which highlights many Niners. Love the story on Dickie Moegle. Again Dennis owes you.

Comment: Heck yeah! they should do this every year, as long as there is an agreement not to intentionally hurt anybody. This would be a perfect test to see what level Alex Smith and Jamarcus Russell are at and where the D stands. They should also switch Tackles Sims and Harris to see how they play on there old teams, lol j/k. The only place we may see these 2 teams play this year other than preseason is the SuperBowl, so yeah this is a great idea.

Comment: Hey Matt, this is unrelated but is there any way you can tell me how to get the 49er Training Camp tickets. It says sign up online, but I have no idea where. I thought I looked everywhere, but I probably missed something. Thanks -Ryan in Santa Clara

Response: The information, along with a link, is in my post about Gretzky from yesterday. --Matt M.

Comment: Randy in Santa Rosa, I'm no Matt Maiocco, but any guy that says Manny Lawson should be a DE in a 4-3 is probably talking out his butthole. There has clearly been no indication that Smith has fallen out of favor, and the evidence is to the contrary. Read Maiocco and Barrow's blogs on the matter, and even they know Smith is the better candidate. The thing about Yahoo! Sports is they know NOTHING, and prove it all the time. Even supposed expert Mike Silver knows jack diddley about what's really going on inside these teams. If he did, he wouldn't be on Yahoo! Sports.

Comment: forget that we don't want no connection to the chokeland raiders. Hey matt what's the update on the QB competition?

Comment: Practicing with the Faiders huh? I dunno about that one... On another note, Vinnie Iyer reports Alex Smith has fallen out of favor for the starting QB spot. Matt, Is this guy just spewing out of his rear or what? http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AnL92beNy.X.N0 Mfr8JPYyKX2bYF?slug=ersburningquestiondothes&prov=ts n&type=lgns
