Second-year safety Dashon Goldson got a chance to run with the first team, as incumbent Mark Roman was out of practice today with a hamstring strain.
It's not known when Roman will be back in the lineup. My personal feeling about Roman is that he is a solid all-around player. However, a free safety should provide more big plays. In eight NFL seasons, Roman has just five interceptions while forcing four fumbles and recovering seven fumbles.
Goldson fancies himself as a sideline-to-sideline playmaker. He played cornerback his senior season at Washington. He said he just wants to be more consistent throughout camp. On the first day of practice, he intercepted two passes. He seems to have a flair for being in the middle of the action.

Comment: Matt I also think you had written something around that Aprils' Draft relative to Mike and Dashon? I thought I'd read that Mike lobbied for him to be selected when the Draft committee was mulling options? Either way, thanks for all that you do to keep us informed, even if we can't remember all the information as adccurately as we need to at times? Thanks to Jeff in LA for the leg-work.

Comment: Jeff in LA, (for oneniner), thanks for the link, glad you located it, because I thought it occured during the Senior Bowl several years ago, so thanks for saving me the hunt.

Comment: Goldson should win the job we need a ball hawk as a safety!!

Comment: Unfortunately, the only vote that matters is Nolan's, and he's proven time and again that he'll go with an older, slower and less effective player if he thinks that veteran will miss less assignments.

Comment: Thks for the link.....Coach Mike S -"There was a corner from Washington (Dashon Goldson) that I really liked. He's a big corner, big kid (6-2, 205) who can come up and put a hit on you. I don't know how much speed he has, but he has a presence out there."........i wonder what happened to the LB's that were doggone good....

Comment: matt...great point about needing more from a free safety. i think the #1 problem with the niners d for the past 8 years or so has been the lack of playmaking from that position (and others). i'd have to check the stats, but i'm pretty sure they've been abysmal in sacks and takeaways during that time compared to the rest of the league. i remember when hanks and mcdonald were regularly making game-changing plays in the secondary, and, of course, lott and company too. board, dean, haley, stubblefield, BY. hell, even doleman, dent, rickey jackson, and kevin greene. it just seems like there hasn't been much of that defensive playmaking since the dynasty ended. i've always been disappointed that keith lewis has never gotten a real chance to start. it seems every time he gets in the game at safety, he makes a big play. so i say, give goldson a chance!

Comment: Yes Oneniner, Singletary did coach/scout Goldson at the Shrine game. Here is the link: http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/default.asp?item=449656
Response: Thanks for finding that link. I forgot I'd written that. --Matt M.

Comment: Goldson is a hog! If there is truly competition at every position like Nolan has said in the past Goldson is winning. If he looks as good in pre-season as he has in practice and doesnt start there is somthing wrong. Roman is no push over but Goldson has pro bowl written all over him if he can start getting game time experience. Goldson... the next Bob Sanders!

Comment: do you think goldson will be the starter by the end of trainning camp? or do you think roman will get his job back. if he don't get his reps in time before the regular season. my opinion i think goldson should start because the way he play on the football field. you need a safety that loves to get in the action and be around the ball all the time. to me he is a (AGGRESSIVE SAFETY)AND BEHIND TO BACK UP CLEMENTS UP TOP HE CAN ALSO HELP STOPPING THE RUNNING GAME. THAT MEANS CLEMENTS REALLY DON'T NEED ANY HELP DEFENDING HIS OPPONEN. AND I PREDICT IF THEY DO LET GOLDSON START LOOK FOR THIS KID TO BE IN THE PROBOWL.

Comment: What I like about this is that we FINALLY have depth in the secondary. Does everyone remember waiting on Shulters, Webster, and Plummer to "Break Out" and it just never seemed to happen? I feel like we again have two #1's at this position and its much better than having the dreaded Mike Nolan special of "two back ups" pushing for a starting job. Let's hope Goldson wins the job and adds a little more flare to the Safety position. Oneniner does ask a great question: When it was announced the Defense could put a speaker in their helmets Mike Nolan preferred to give it to Mark Roman as he called him the QB of his defense. That dynamic will make it harder for Goldson to beat out Roman for the job, but I believe he has what it takes.

Comment: Goldson will get his shot, no need to demote roman who has been consistently solid in relating plays to the defense.....Matt, i guess if due to Roman's injury, Goldson gets to start- who will be wearing the headphones.....Willis?...if not willis who else is a candidate?...I believe Nolan would rather hav a db instead of a lb.....any thoughts?
Posted By: Mike in Sac (30/07/2008 7:31:10 AM)
Comment: I know you are not supposed to lose your job with an injury but this kid needs to play as he his some real upside. I would rather deal with a potential broken play once and a while to let this kid learn verus the plain old vanilla Roman brings. Come on Goldson!
Posted By: StonerLab (30/07/2008 7:13:54 AM)
Comment: Although Roman has alot more experience than Dashon the fact that Matt brought up Roman's career stats on Int's & fumbles proves the young player should get a shot. Those stats of Roman are pretty low for a free safety, you should expect more from that position. I would rather have a free safety who is faster & can bring the "wood" on any ball carrier wether it's a WR or RB. It's so important to have that kind of intimidation in the secondary so your opponent's WR's & the QB have to think twice before attempting any pass. I say let the kid get his chance.

Comment: Marc - NJ49er - Is it really true Mike Singletary lobbied for him?...where did yu read that, can you post the link?...
Posted By: Marc - NJ49er (30/07/2008 12:53:24 AM)
Comment: I like the fact the Dashon covers more ground and is a sure tackler. Time for another young gun to step up and prove he belongs. This was a kid Mike Singletary lobbied for and we know Mike knows a playmaker. Willis and Goldson should compliment one another very well.

Comment: That poll question is a tough one. I had to pick Roman because he has more experience in the league and the system. But Goldston is getting better though. he reminds of Lance Schulters, someone that can get to the ball quick and make a big hit.

Comment: the results of the poll was refreshing because its shows a rarity....niner fans on this blog pretty much agreeing with eachother

Comment: Didn't see the poll. Goldson certainly brings an exciting dynamic to the field. The 9ers are going to have to get difference makers on the field. If we aren't going to have a true pass-rusher (10+ sacks guaranteed) to disrupt offenses, we need to have guys on the field that make big plays. M Lewis played well in run support and decent skills. I say, give the kid chance in the preseason and see what he does. It is critical that he not be a boom or bust type guy.
